6 Make Recycling a Way of Life

{Ed Note: This art/clefs written by a conC6rn8d resident and has nothing to do with the BoaJd of Directors of OWG.J

The Houston plastic recycling plant no longer is accepting plastic containers; therefore the locations listed last month no longer accept "1" and M2" plastic containers, although they still !ake plastic bags. The City of Houston's Westpark Drive facility 10 Southwest Houston Is the only location in the Houston area still accepting plastic containers for recycling.

Since the recycling movement is relatively new and has gathered momentum faster than the creation of products that are made of recyclable materials, supply will exceed demand temporarily. Don't become frustrated but realize that the recycling movement is without a national organizational plan to create Incentives for business to invest in recycling technology.

Meanwhile, continue to recycle those Items accepted at recycling centers, buy containers made of recycled materials to support his new Industry, and substitute other products not packaged In plastic when possible.

One area In which we can make a large negative Impact of landfills Is In the disposal of yard waste, which takes up about 17% of Texas landfills. Install a mulching kit on your lawn mower (less than $50) and compost other yard and kitchen organic material. Compost Is the best food for your lawn and beds.

Letters and calls to your local, state, and national legislative officials on your concerns about the lack of an environmental recycling policy may produce results.

To share recycling information, all Yvonne Tallent, 370-0938.
