Sons of the lOOth who figured prominently in the news recently ere~ JIM MIYAKE who was awarded the MVP award of the 1969 lOOth En emorial Baseball League season on the strength of his brilliant pitch

ing performance all season long for the champion Waiakea Pirates team. His kid brother, "Rapid ll Robert does some fancy tossing for the high school team and together they could team up as a brother combination act unique in local baseball history. No wonder Father Michael looks forward to his Sundays.

NEAL HAGIWARA, "Skinny'" Hagiwarats boy who, swimming for the crack Hilo AqQatic Club in the re~ent State Age Group Swimming Championship at the Kamehameha Pool took two blue ribbon events in the 500 freestyle ani the 200 butterfly and also swam in two other relay events in nich the Hila team rewrote the record book. and Jack Ota's irrepressible WINSTON OTA. Riley swam a leg on the 200 yds. freestyle relay team which broke the existing Hawa.iian record twice in one day. Winston, who is one year away from championship form, cut out all horseplay, spent his soda pop money on Absorbine Jr. and did creditable showing in all his events. We trust Taku Okajima and Shigeru Ushijirna will be e.l<;perien<cing their moments of glory when their kids come through with a win, competing with the best in the state in the Age Group Swimming Championship meet.

ABLE CHAPTER NEWS By Blue Nagasa.ld.

GO WHERE THE ACTrON IS! The first action for Able Chapter members was held at Kanraku Teahouse on

c. March 29 . It was well attended by Able members- -over 50 ~t:i'l members, those whom you see often, who make the clubhouse

their second home and those you haven't seen for ages-some of them-_ since the war ended. Was good to see SABURO YOKOYAMA again, who still works as a stevedore . No doubt, he was happy to see the boys under ODe roof and he was himself again by leading the group in singing of old favorite songs-songs such as, "Ohl Johnny, Oh! Johnny, You are mt Sunshine, Don't Sit under the Old Apple Tree~ If and many other popula.r songs. Those ~re the good old days! Aft~r having a few, it sure brought out unknown talents among the boys--Richard Nakahara (Japanese style)' Biffa Moriguchi, Tony Iwaki and a few more of uDan Ho" caliber types . Good to see Mildo Kamei , up and around looking great after a long ailment.

Was able to have a small talk with the special guest of the evening, our Club 100 PresId'8nt, HENRY KAWANO . Chats about how to improve the club image by starting to live up to our Club 100 motto:: IIFor Continuing Service"-maybe pick up or s tart a project-just like " the Lions Clubs. Why is there a small turnout in almost all the club affairs1 How come high government officials send their aides and wellJ

... known people don't show up even though a personal invitation is given " them to our gatherings? Is it because the clllb is losing its prestige or losing its effeilt as a group ill this business, political, and social world of Hawaii? How come some members who eli rectly or indirectly be~ cause of their association with Club 100 got ahead in this world haven1t offered their s emcee for many years to help, guide, lead, lend their knowledge , wisdom, connections , experiences, influences to take the first and right step for Club 100 to gpin higher ground or regain our image-not only as the best fighting unit but as a post-war organization which praetices good sound American system of life! Ask allY" teenager-do you know the Club 1007 Most likely the answer will be Who are they? mt you boys did! So, let1s do something worthwhile that your kids (instant generation) can be proud of this organization and they themselves ldll join hand-in-hand with you and help, build, push, carq on and provide for a better world to live in . "' "Besides PayinB the usual party fee, the following members didn't come empty handed. but provi.ded more refreshments to make the stag party a groovy and a lasting one. Thanks to t he donor s who were Tak Yamane, Mild Temane, Kiyo Kami, Al Arakaki, R. Ishimoto, Kuni Fujimoto, Japan

IOOlICS NEWS By Kent Nakamura

From the medicine cheat • •••• Some weeks ago, with the thought or getting some a etlan, I dropped in at the domicile of tlPuunui Fats,U the self- taught pocket-pool hotshot . Entering the home I s recreation roomg

I found the great one fixing up the pool table o I ' ve knOlm the t'el.l.ow long enough when he I s busy with • cme-j thing, let him alone .

I saw enough, was that action had to be postponed . So, I offered my II so- l ong" ; he lIttlttered things about a new cloth,

new pockets . MoVing toward the door, I visually checked the rack ot sticks . ~ of the sticks, even those that had been gotten rather recently, Beemed to have acquired more noticeable crooks. I figured that he had left them out in the !"a:ln again. Up there, there I s an unsporting house rule that crooked s ticks are for visitors .

This past week-end, I checked with the fellow and cleared that table was all fixed up for play. So, we tll be having aome action.

Hustlers arxl. sharpies play according to rules, and everywhere there is observance of a set ot rules of conducd and play-what ""count,s' to an unwritten code .

Page 10: APRIL 1969 - evols.library.manoa.hawaii.edu · We welcome to the pages of the Puka Puka Parade the advertisers who make possible this publication. The Puka Puka Parade is the only

Not so where we play. A typical afternoon of action begins something as follows~

He pulls off the covering from the table and, as he starts to fold the covering, remarks, "Choose your weapon It. Because I have complained about ~ooked sticks before, and bvinging out his own special jointed stick, he needles me some more, lilt I s the player, not the stick. I"~

The game begins and goes on with no side scoring spectacularly. Then, just as he is about to pot the 15 ball, I abruptly turn my back to the play, bang my cue on the floor, reach for the rack and cautions hil)l, "game ball." I keep my back to him and listen for the sound of a ball dropping into a pocket, but not hearing such a sound, I know he has flubbed an easy one.

r He just about screams that nobody has to tell him that the 15 ball is the game ball, that I shouldn't rush him by reaching for the rack, that I should play cleanly.

At the other crucial points of other games, just when a player is about to stroke a shot, the other pl~er coughs, turns the radio's volume way up suddenly, even lets out wind--as possible.

Admittedly, this is dirty pool playing, but it is dirty playing at its best because both parties are aware that no quarters is given. Pretty often, bhlls PQc'keteCl Oy one player end up on the other side of the table.

His children are scolded for moving in the background, for opening the door the wrong time, for laughiilg too much outside. When he misses a fairly easy shot, he blames the music (not the right kind, he says), the washing machine (for hUIlllIling too loudly), the weather.

As you can see, clean playing is no fun. The game--as we play it is played seriously, and serious playing means that you gotta nettle the other guy, keep a cool head, and keep on grumbling. The one who weakens first, loses.

At the beginning of this year's league, the game managers decided that after playing a regular round, the best four of the six team league would play in a round- -robin but during the final games, the managers changed their minds and decided not to elimina. te the low t earns but· declared the first round games have no bearing on the win and loss standing as this was like playing in a grapefruit

Takashi Kitaoka used the gavel with great authority and kept the meeting running

smoothly throughout the time required. Our meetiIgs have averaged a little over half- an- hour this year and the rest of the evening is spent in relaxing and enjqying each other's company over a bottle of beer or highball.

During the meeti ng, members voted to send. a check of $150.00 to the Club 100 sponsored Littl e League Team--Piratea to help defray their expenses for the coming baseball season.

Iwao Takamori, Mother's Day Dinner Chairman, reports that either Maui Frontier Restaurant or the Golden Jade Chop Sue,y Restaurant will be the site for this dinner . A definite location will be picked qy next meeting .

According to Poison Kamimoto, Maui coordinator for the Honolulu C Chapter member s ' visit to Maul during the June 8th week-end, May 15 has been designated as the cut-off time for C Chapter member s to send in their hotel reservations. c_ game s. looks as t hough all the Singing, drinking, etc., wasn1t enough, for the Nesans and guys wound up at Denver Grill. No wonder when the wives suggested th.at we have our hen party at the I shii Garden, the men-folks gave us a loud and clear NOI

While the men were having a ball, we wives also had a grand time . We went to the Prince Kubio as it was moreLcentr~ l ocated. The follwing ladies: Kay Chinen, Momoyo Endo, Mildred Hoaaka, Rhoda Ka:wamata, Florence Mitsunaga, stella Nakayama, Thelma Urabe, thaI Usui and Helen Nikaido were escorted and chaperoned b.1 Bru~e

Hosaka and Vicki Kawamata. The dinner was superb and as the evening was still yourtg, the ladies all went to the Nikaidos . Although it was a small group, we had a very nice time . Ask Florence, she had to go home barefooted-afraid ahe might slip . So you see, our first hen party was a success, too. Hope the next time mor e ladies will join us .

Thank you Martin Tohara, Masaji Ualli and Her bert Yamamoto f or our generous donat i ons of whiskey and beer for the stag part y o N~ ime how about donating to the hen party instead !

To those of you who are basketball enthuaiasts- -did you notice cute , little, round- eyed cheer leader at the Mid- Pac games? She

B none other than Eva Hosaka, daughter of "Doc'" and Mildred. Roaaka .
