The cost is one’s very life. We must turn our lives over to the will of God and follow the call of Christ. Just as the sheep that Jesus speaks of in the Gospel, we must hear His voice, and follow Him where He will lead us. Each and every one of us is called by God to a higher standard, a better life, to be saints with Him in Heaven. If we are not shooting for sainthood then we are aiming too low! The graces that God provides to us, especially through the Sacraments, are the fuel that we need to make our spiritual engines take us to our final destination. When we realize that there is nothing in this world, even our very lives, that has not been given to us by God, we can come to an understanding that we are called to return that very life back to God as a gift freely given. It is only after we have made this giving of one’s self back to God that we truly begin to really live our lives. - Deacon Bill Watzek

APRIL 17 • ST. JOAN OF ARC • 3

This Sunday the Church throughout the world is celebrating the mystery of God’s call to a vocation. We believe that we are all called to live out our Baptismal promises and call as committed disciples and followers of the Way of Jesus. We all share a common vocation to proclaim the Good News of Jesus and to be a living invitation for others to come and to know Jesus better. We live out this common, universal call to be disciples in different ways. Traditionally we have described this diversity of vocational responses to God’s invitation as the Married state, the Single state and Ordained or Vowed Life. Each of these overarching life directions carries its own responsibilities, accomplishments, joys, struggles and supernatural assistance. Each of them evolves and matures as we live them out with faithfulness and commitment. Each of them, hopefully, with the help of God, makes a difference for the good in our world.

This weekend we pray for and give attention to vocations to the priesthood in diocesan ministry or in vowed, religious life as a priest. It is important for us as a faith community to believe and respond to the truth that God is always calling young and not so young Christians to a life of ordained ministry. The calls from God, however, need to be supported and reinforced by the support of family and friends. One of the most important influences on the discernment of a priestly vocation is parental and family encouragement. The support of other adults like priests, deacons, teachers, coaches, etc. is also very critical. The faith and modeling by those living a life that is responsive to God, prayerful and compassionate, provides mentors for those seeking God’s will in a vocational choice. Active participation by families in the worship and sacramental life of our parish provides the good example that is needed. Participation in youth ministry, college campus ministry, service projects and other forms of volunteerism is also important in vocational discernment.

Each of your priests and deacons at Saint Joan of Arc has his own story of vocational call and response. There is no ideal profile for a religious vocation. So many gifts and strengths are needed for ministry that it is impossible to describe the “Priestly personality.” Just look at your priests and deacons here at Saint Joan of Arc for confirmation of this truth. I would only suggest that a commitment to prayer, to the well being of others, to service and compassion are important. There also needs to be a spirit of adventure, openness to others, and courage. It is not easy to make a long-term commitment to anything today. Married couples have the same challenge. With God’s grace, however, all things are possible.

If you know of any young or not so young man who you believe may have a religious vocation (he may be a member of your family), please suggest and encourage openness and searching with him. Remember that God works through faithful people to accomplish His will and to extend His invitations. You may very well be the necessary messenger. For any further counsel on this matter, please personally contact one of our priests or deacons.

Saint John Vianney, Saint Vincent de Paul -- Patrons of Clergy, pray for our parish and diocese.

TIME, TALENT, & TREASURE...It is wonderful to see Mattie & Robert Chastain making sure that the Grotto by the convent is always looking fresh and renewed. Last week, Mrs. Maria Fimiani, and her brother Frank Fimiani poured a new walkway from the sidewalk to the grotto and along with our SJA Scouts planted roses by the convent. These loving parishioners are always hands- on to participate with their time, talent, and treasure in our parish and we want to thank them for being cheerful givers!

FIRST COMMUNION RETREATThis past Saturday April 9th, a group of 99 religious Education children grades 2-6 and their parents gathered to spend some time praying together and learning more about the Eucharist they are going to receive. Fr. Tom Lafreniere gave the parents a wonderful talk about the beauty of the Eucharist. The children and their parents had a splendid time working on their First Communion Banners and we closed the day with “Dressing the Altar” where the children learned the names of the sacred vessels in the Church and received a special blessing from their parents and a medal of St. Joan of Arc.

Please pray for our First Communicants of the School and Religious Education.

FROM THE SJA DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND STEWARDSHIPWhere did the time go? It is hard to believe that a quarter of the school year is nearing the end. In only a couple months summer will be here. Our seasonal parish members are beginning to go back north for the summer and vacations are being planned. I guess that old adage, “Time flies when you are having fun,” must be true.

Reflecting on the awesome community life we have here at St. Joan of Arc, I would like to give credit to everyone who makes a difference in our community, and is responsible for the great works that happen here. Thanks to everyone, our parishioners, staff, teachers, and clergy, this year has been a year full of fun, service, and spiritual growth. There is always something going on at SJA that meets the needs of every demographic of our parish. We are truly blessed!

As the list is long and I have a limited amount of space, I will highlight some of our activities and events. Please know that this is a fraction of the activities that go on at St. Joan of Arc, and like our Mission statement says, we really are a “vibrant and active Catholic community.“

Our parish community returned in August, and our social life kicked into high gear beginning with the Dad’s Club Welcome Back party, which gave returning families a chance to reconnect and welcomed new families to the community. In October, the International Festival celebrated parish diversity with over 500 in attendance and a potluck dinner, and the Pumpkin Carving. December launched in style with the popular Breakfast with Santa that brought young parish families together. The Annual Gala Auction and Raffle fund raiser saw long time parishioners, and school families socializing and raising funds for both the parish and the school. CCW membership held monthly meetings and hosted a wonderful membership luncheon and fashion show for 100, and most recently Family, Faith, and Fun day hosted over 400 children and their families for a fun-filled day with activities, food, entertainment and games.

Opportunities are abound for those in our community who are enriched through service to others. Over 200 of our youth participated in the Youth vs Hunger food packing day, supplying over 100,000 meals to Haiti. To date our Care Ministry has assisted the needy with approximately $180,000 in emergency funds, and supplied food throughout the year to nearly 35 families a week. SJA entertained, fed, and gave gifts to over 220 children at our Annual Haitian Christmas party. As well, we financed a roof repair in order to save historical artifacts from ruin in an 18th century Cuban Church, gave assistance to Sr. Immaculata’s Good Shepherd Ministry in Peru, held a baby shower for Birthline, and the Dad’s Club purchased a car for a family in need. We’ve touched many lives in our service to others.

Last but not least, we were blessed with abundant opportunities to spiritually nourish our souls. We accomplished this through; the many bible study programs offered; Women of Grace; the incredible Annual Parish Mission presented by Fr. Tom McCarthy; the Koinonia Parish Retreat; the School of Christian Formation was offered to over 30 people; over 428 children were educated in the faith through religious education classes, 120 were baptized, 160 children celebrated their First Communion; 124 children were confirmed; and over 14 adults catechumen and candidates were prepared through RCIA. We shared our faith and brought many into a closer relationship with God.

Thank you to all of you who help to make life at St. Joan of Arc so full of opportunities, socially, spiritually, in service, and in fun. You make a difference at St. Joan of Arc, and without you none of these wonderful things would happen and the year would not fly by.

SJA SCHOOL TAKEOVER DAY

CCW ANNUAL SPRING GATHERINGThe SJA CCW held the Annual Spring Gathering to promote Covenant House Fort Lauderdale, a crisis shelter for children and teens. Executive Director, Jim Gress spoke of the full support and care given to victims of Human Trafficking, and runaways. It was a wonderful evening. Thank you to Santa Ana Circle for hosting the event.

At the 2015 SJA Gala, parents bid on the opportunity for their children to participate in a leadership “Take Over Day” experience as Principal, Assistant Principal, Teacher, and Coaches for a Day. Leadership roles include delivering morning and afternoon announcements via CCTV, classroom observations, having breakfast and lunch with the school staff, coaching sports activities, and teaching a class. The “Principal” and “Assistant Principal” for a Day, had a chance to visit Msgr. McGraw and his staff in the Parish Office. They gave their input, and even test tried some of the furniture being considered for the New Mercy Center. At the end of the school day, these students announced a “No-Homework Night.” SJA students were thrilled to hear this announcement. Congratulations to our Take Over Day participants who experienced a memorable day as “leaders,” and did a superb job running the school on Thursday, April 7, 2016.

Welcome the NEW Graduates!

THE PALM BEACH COUNTY LITERACY COALITION RECENTLY HELD THEIR ANNUAL ESSAY CONTEST.

Nine of our St. Joan adult learners wrote essays. The theme this year was “What Is Your Favorite Holiday?” Three of our participants were chosen for special certificates.

Karina Palomino was invited to read her essay in West Palm Beach at the gathering of close to 700 adults who competed in this contest.

Only a few are invited to this honor.

Rosario Gonzales and Doris Amaya were awarded Honorable Mention for their writing on this theme.

All students who entered the contest are given an Award of Participation. We are proud of these individuals

who are striving to learn a second language.

We thank the dedicated tutors who assist in making this program very successful. Each year one of our adult learners from this center

receives special recognition.

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property.

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you’d like to make.1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed.2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.)A bequest can be made in a number of ways:• A specific dollar amount.• Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property.• Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan.• A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.• An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc.

STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you’ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney.

An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits.

As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes.

STEP 4 Contact us.We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.)

Please contact Wendy Horton in the Development Office at (561) 952-2838 or [email protected].

A Special Week of Blue for National Child Abuse Awareness Month In observance of National Child Abuse Awareness month which takes place in April, the diocesan Office of Safe Environments invite all to show your support against child abuse by wearing blue and participating in a special event April 11-16. We ask individuals, groups, ministries, schools and parishes to support this initiative by planning an event that raises awareness and start a discussion about Child Safety.

We encourage all schools and parishes to participate in a one-day during the week April 11 -16. Some ideas include wearing blue, creating a slogan, having a fund raiser, plant pinwheels, tie ribbons outdoors, have a family event, prayer service or hold a training class. We encourage all students, staff, youth groups, Religious Education classes and ministries to get involved.

However you decide to participate in National Child Abuse Awareness Month please take pictures or video and send them to [email protected] in our office so we can use them, even posting them to the diocesan Facebook page.

IV DOMINGO DE PASCUA, CICLO C San Juan 10, 27-30: El Buen Pastor.
