REQUESTING A FEW MINUTES OF QUIET TIME

As a Parish Staff continuing to grow in Christ’s love, we have prayer each day from 9:30-10:00. Not only does this give us time to reflect on how we can serve the Lord bet-ter, but also better serve our Parishioners and the commu-nity around us. If you need to call or stop by, we would ask if you would do so before or after this half hour. Thx!

Wherever you usually sit in church, there is probably a statue that has come to feel like an old friend. For me, it’s St. Therese of Lisieux. If you sit in the presider’s chair and look towards the ambo, you’ll see St. Therese in the distance. But last Sunday, you probably noticed that there is a lot more purple fabric in the church, and a lot less artwork.

After Mass last week, one of our youngest parishioners asked me why we had draped coverings over all the statues. Our statues are meant to inspire us, and to lift our minds to things of heaven. It does seem counterin-tuitive, doesn’t it, to veil them during a time when we are particularly encouraged to contemplate the eternal? The practice of veiling statues and images is an old one. We are encouraged to veil images in churches starting on the Fifth Sunday of Lent. This does several things. First, it is a striking reminder that these two weeks of Lent, when we remember Jesus’s Passion, are not merely different from the rest of the year. They are different from the earlier part of Lent, too. The images we are used to seeing — the Crucifix, the Blessed Mother, St. Therese, St. Francis, the Pieta, the angels — they are all gone. Our church feels different.

This difference, this starkness, emphasizes the Scriptures we will read during Holy Week. This Sunday, we read St. Luke’s account of the Crucifixion. This coming Friday, we will read St. John’s account of the Cruci-fixion. They are long readings, and intense readings. Covering our statues, removing some of the beauty from our church, is an act of mourning for our dying Savior. And the starkness, the knowledge that something is missing, should increase our anticipation for Easter. At East-er, all our statues will be visible again. Those veils are not meant to be in place for ever. Just as Jesus will not be in the tomb forever, just as the trials of this passing world will not last forever. The bigger reality is not the veil. The bigger reality is not sorrow, or suffering, or death, or the grave. The bigger reality is the Resurrection. And that’s why the veils will come off at Easter.

NOTE - CFSA 2019 update: Thank you for your generosity and response to Catholic Family Sharing Appeal for 2019. Our goal this year is $118,500 and we have received a pledged amount of $95,196.50. This amounts to 80% of our goal. We have had 350 families return their cards out of 1,350 families in the parish. We are praying for 100% participation. If you are unable to give financially, we ask you to return the pledge card with a prayer request and ask you to pray for the success of CFSA-2019. Remember, if we go over our goal the proceeds stay with our parish for our own needs. The overage this year will be placed in a growing fund for the restoration of our stained glass windows. Thank you for your generosity! God Bless! Fr. Mark

Holy Week Wisdom Christ conquered the devil with the same weapons the devil used against us: a virgin, a tree, and death. These tokens of our demise have now become the to-kens of our victory. Instead of Eve, there is Mary; in-stead of the tree of knowledge, there is the wood of the Cross; and instead of Adam’s death, there is the death of Christ. - St. John Chrysostom
