OFFERING GEL, SOLAR, SHELLAC & ACRYLIC NAILS

A nancial services agency with a humble history has opened a new of ce at Mission Shopping Centre.

H&R Block started from modest beginnings in the U.S. and has since expanded across North America, includ-ing several locations across the Central Okanagan.

In the early1940s, Henry Bloch was attending classes at Harvard Busi-ness School when he  stumbled onto a pamphlet in the Harvard Library that illustrated the challenges facing Ameri-ca’s small businesses.

The message sparked a desire for Henry to help small companies succeed. He imagined a company providing com-prehensive services, including collection and management, accounting, tempo-rary workers, and tax management for small businesses.

With $5,000 borrowed from his aunt, Henry and his older brother, Leon, set forth to make Henry’s dream a reality.

In 1946, the brothers opened United Business Company, providing bookkeep-ing services from a rented storeroom of- ce on Main Street in Kansas City, Mo. The business struggled the rst year, and Leon returned to law school. Henry,

however, was determined to make the company work.

He eventually landed a bookkeep-ing assignment for a small hamburger stand, and business took off.

Soon after, Henry’s brother Richard joined him and quickly worked his way up to partner.

The business changed in 1955 when a client suggested the brothers ad-vertise tax preparation services in The Kansas City Star.

People from all over the city began coming to the Bloch brothers to have their tax returns done, prompting Rich-ard and Henry to specialize exclusively in income tax preparation.

As their business expanded, the brothers began to realize that “Bloch” was dif cult for customers to pronounce and spell.

And so, on Jan. 25, 1955, the broth-ers incorporated and renamed their business H&R Block, Inc., a name that has become synonymous with tax and other nancal services in the years since.

Clothing, Footwear & Accessories!

Springis here

BY BARRY GERDING

Step inside the CoCo Boutique in Mission Shopping Centre and you will nd a unique selection of footwear, clothing and accessories.

And the key word is unique, as store owner Cheryl Blum is offering items that you won’t nd anywhere else in Kelowna, in particular with some of the jewelry accessory items that she’s helped design herself.

The CoCo Boutique was located down on Pandosy Street since Blum opened the shop seven years ago, and she made the move to the Mission Mall in February.

“Everyone wants to say what they have is unique but I know with certainty that what we carry you won’t nd any-where else,” Blum said.

She credits that to putting in hard work to search out new clothing, ac-cessory and footwear lines that are not necessarily widely available.

“I enjoy going out and hunting for new things that are up and coming to offer my customers. I have a passion for that and I love doing it,” she said.

“There is no better feeling for me then sending a customer out the door excited about what they’ve purchased. That’s what I like to see. I don’t believe in just making the sale, I want to make a sale where the customer leaves the store super-happy with what they’ve bought.”

Blum said she made the move from Pandosy St. to Mission Park mainly to nd more space, in order to offer customers more clothing and footwear - and to stay in the Mission area.

Blum moved to Kelowna from Saskatoon, where she had worked in a

government job after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from the University of Saskatchewan.

She said many people comment on the CoCo name to her business, which she says came from her dad.

“That was his nickname for me growing up. He passed away shortly be-fore I moved to Kelowna and I still miss him today. My mom and I were talking back then about possible names for the store. I wanted something that had a personal meaning to me, but using my own name sounded really lame,” she recalled.

“Then we thought about the CoCo nickname, and that just seemed perfect because it came from my dad.”

CoCo Boutique can be contacted at 250-861-4400, online at www.coco-boutique.ca, or the Facebook page for daily arrivals.

Wink-i-wear is an optical boutique unlike any other in the Okanagan.

Quality hand made designs created by top eyewear designers world-wide, are

now available in Kelowna.

The eyewear you've been waiting for

Laura had a vision to create an eyewear store in Kelowna that would add to the destination experience of our beautiful city. “Too many people were driving to Vancouver to nd unique eyewear, so I felt there was a need to bring fabulous styles, from New York, Italy and France to Kelowna.” she says. “A proud moment for me was when Tart Optical, maker of Tart Arnels worn by Johnny Depp and other celebrities offered Wink-i-Wear the exclusive rights to distribute the product in Canada.” Many of the lines carried at Wink-i-Wear are not available anywhere else in the Okanagan.

Lens quality is also a big deal at Wink-i-Wear. The store has a cutting edge piece of technology from Essilor called a Visiof ce, which has the ability to take detailed, individualized measure-ments from each frame and marry them with the wearers facial characteristics to produce very high quality prescription lenses and optics.

Wink-i-Wear also carries the Okana-gan’s largest selection of vintage never worn eyewear, and supplies period spectacles for TV, movies and theme weddings or parties.

Among the store’s specialty product lines is Drift Eyewear, specializing in handmade frames made of sustainable wood and distinguished by eco-friendly designs. Their latest model, Delta Blues, is made from the reclaimed wood from 100-year-old cypress recovered from the bottom of the Mississippi River.

Entourage of 7 is a luxury eyewear label that constantly reinvents itself. It is always at the forefront of design, tech- nology and is the essence of cool.

Etnia Barcelona is an independent brand of handmade eyewear with a wide range of colours and designs for everyone who wants to express him- or herself beyond the cannons imposed by momentary and passing fashion and trends.

Face à Face is a stunning designer from Paris with amazing colours and shapes, each frame is uniquely detailed and handcrafted.

Gold & Wood is a gateway to subtle

luxury, where quality and opulence of the materials and workmanship speak for themselves. Gold & Wood has been worn by celebrities such as Catherine Heigl, Antonio Banderas and Elise Crombez.

Designed and handmade in France, J. F. Rey has some of the nest attention to detail seen in eyewear. Exquisite detail goes into every frame and can particu-larly be seen in their Lace & Silk lines.

Kaenon is a high quality impact resistant line of sunwear with incredible optics. Glass wasn’t strong enough, and polycarbonate wasn’t clear enough. Nei-ther material allowed for adequate cus-tomization of tints and light transmis-sion levels. Kaenon’s proprietary SR-91 is the only lens material that combines the superior optical quality of the nest glass and the lightweight, strength and impact resistance of polycarbonate. All of the best properties. No compromises. No short-cuts.

Lerocher New York is an independent lifestyle brand that creates premium eye-wear for people who like striking shapes, colours and patterns. Bringing vibrant, unique and one-of-a-kind eyewear front and centre, Lerocher New York takes optics to a personal, stylish and artful experience.

Oga, a re ned line of Men’s eyewear with Scandinavian designs and is grand-fathered by 4 generations of eyewear designers.

Ørgreen is designed and developed in Denmark and each frame is handmade in Japan. Individually crafted with more than 100 processes, each frame can take up to six months to achieve its penchant for perfection.

Strongly rooted in Danish design, Pro Design dares to be bold and optimistic, creating award winning products with an aesthetic appeal and an unexpected twist. This philosophy strives to enhance and complete the best facial features.

Wink-i-Wear is now open Monday through Saturday at the Mission Park Mall, #7-605 KLO Road. Come by and check out the unique selection or call 250-862-WINK (9465) or check out the store’s website at www.winkiwear.ca

The Sass Studio & Spa has been a business mainstay at the Mis-sion Shopping Cen-tre for the past eight years, but the salon continues to add to its services to accommodate customer demands.

The salon, co-owned by Carolyn Russo and Cara Carpenter, has three new features.

One is a boutique that offers fashion-able handbags and hats made by the San Diego Hat Company.

The hat company was launched by the new Original Cotton Crotchet Hat concept that the company founders, Andrew Bleecher and Teresa Gardner, origi-nally discovered the idea from during a trip to Bali.

Started in a garage, the company has since grown creating a new fashion line of hats every year worldwide.

Also new to the sa-lon is Mona Garr, a nail

technician who specializes in body sculpture services such

as bio nails, lash extensions and waxing.

As well, Sarah is the new aesthetician in the salon, specializing in detox body wraps,

body sculpting, cold laser treatments for anti-

aging, skin acne, cellulite and sun damage and eyelash

extensions. The newcomers join the experienced Sass Studio lineup of hair-stylists that includes Cara, Carolyn, Kim, Betty, Laura, Jane and

Alicia.
