This week commemorates the last days of Jesus’ earthly life from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, through his passion and death on Good Friday, to his resurrection on Easter. This week often coincides with the Jewish festival of Passover, an agricultural celebration that also remembers the deliverance of the Jews from slavery in Egypt. Jesus and his disciples were in Jerusalem during Passover, and the “Last Supper” may have been the Jewish Seder meal. For both Jews and Christians these are days of Freedom, from literal human bondage and from slavery to sin and death. Our Holy Week/Passover observance this year will include special vespers on Palm Sunday, 3:55 PM, the Rev. Tammy Bales preaching. A presentation on the Passover will be given Wednesday, April 12, 10:30 AM in the Rising Classroom with Ed Hillman and Penny White. The Last Supper will be celebrated on Holy Thursday, 4:00 PM with Dr. Don Price. Jesus’ death will be remembered on Good Friday, 10:30 AM. And Easter Sunday worship will be led by the Rev. Jim Chatham at 4:00 PM. All the worship services will be in Pulliam Chapel, and the Givens Choir will sing on several occasions during the week. A service of Healing Prayer will be held Monday, April 17th at 4:00 PM. Springtime is a glorious reminder of new life after the death of winter. We will be joining some special friends at Garden City Chapel by the Sea for some meaningful mission work, home-cooking, and be blessed in the spirit of friendship while helping others. The goal of the mission trip is to helpgetthecampreadyforthefloodofsummercampers,e.g. tidy up the dorm rooms, tighten the bolts on loose bunk bed frames, get the kitchens ready (reclaim the kitchen utensils that have walked off, clean ovens and refrigerators, etc.) and help with special projects around camp. Each year several weeks of camperships are provided by Garden City Chapel by the Sea at very little cost to economically disadvantaged youth. The camp is one block from the Atlantic Ocean and a beautiful beach. Beautiful sunrises can be enjoyed if you get up early. Plans typically include daily devotions, a special outing to the Carolina Opry, ice cream shop, and a seafood restaurant, laughter, stories, and more. Note: Four of the eight buildings that the group will be working in have stairs. If you would like to sign up, please be sure you can climb stairs with no issues. The cost for all meals, transportation (larger forward seating bus) and lodging (except our lunch driving there and back) will again be just $95. Through the generosity of some special people this trip is made very affordable. We have

openings for sixteen residents, so sign-up quickly. We are extending this invitation to Givens Estates, Givens Gerber Park, Givens Highland Farms, and Givens Great Laurels. Please call Maggie Schmidt to make your reservation (828) 771-2235. We will have pre-trip orientation meetings once we know who is coming so you will know what to bring. We hope you will consider this special mission trip in your plans. We celebrate this opportunity to be together, while serving others! Please contact any of the following with questions.

Rotarians Against Hunger Campaign:

MANNA Foodbank

Begins Wednesday, April 12th at 9:00 AM Through Friday, April 14th

Craft Room

We have been asked to participate again this year in the Rotarians Against Hunger campaign. It is as easy as peeling off a label and placing it on the plastic bag. MANNA Foodbank will provide to the volunteers at Givens 15,000 labels and 15,000 plastic bags. Working in the Asbury Commons Craft Room here at Givens Estates, our job will be to place the labels on the bags on Wednesday, April 12 any time, Thursday morning and Friday morning April 13 and 14. MANNA will pick up the labeled bags and deliver them to another set of volunteers at the Biltmore Park YMCA. On April 29 those volunteers will pack the bags with meals providedbyMANNAtoproducethefinishedproduct.MANNA will distribute the packed meals to food insecure individuals in Western North Carolina. So we need volunteers to participate in our labeling effort. If you can volunteer for a few hours, that would be good. If you can volunteer for most of the day, so much the better. You don’t need to sign up, just come. However, we would appreciate you signing in when you arrive for work. Call Walt Justice at 285-2517 if you have any questions.

“The American Home Front in World War II” with Renée Melchiorre

The 75th anniversary last December of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor leads us to ask what was it like for ordinary Americans living in such perilous times? We may find an added perspective and appreciationforthemanysacrificesandcontributionsmadebyourneighbors, the family down the street and from our own family members. We’ll reconnect with the “greatest generation” of Americans through diary entries, letters, memoirs and oral histories to understand how it was possible for all of them, and for the whole country to get caught up in that war. Renée Melchiorre earned a

Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts from the University of Kansas where she focused her graduate research on the movement of women workers into the male-oriented industrial plants, specificallyFordMotorCompany, forwarproductionduring World War Two. She taught American History at University of Kansas and has continued her research and study into World War II history ever since.

Earth Day Get Away Picnic at the Botanical Gardens

Saturday, April 22nd 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM

Leaves from Asbury and Oxford Commons

After WWII, the population in this small mountain townexploded, leavingmagnificent trees, shrubs, andwildflowers in its wake. Botany enthusiasts workeddiligently to rescue what they could, but were running out of space to transplant the orphaned greenery. With their private gardens filling up, Bruce Shinn and herhusband, Tom joined forces with Marjorie McCracken, Lorene Macon, and biology professor, Cornelia Ann Serota, all of whom envisioned acquiring land where threatened native species would be protected and their beauty could be enjoyed by the public for generations. In the late 1950s, Shinn asked the editor of the Asheville Citizen to write an editorial in support of the concept of a public garden. That editorial appeared on January 17, 1960, and elicited an immediate positive response. Public contributions began to arrive. Over the past four decades, The Botanical Gardens at Asheville has been adding color and knowledge to our great city. Located on a 10-acre tract of land adjacent to the UNCA (University

of North Carolina at Asheville) campus, the gardens are constantly evolving. To this day, The Botanical Gardens at Asheville is supported by contributions and volunteers who dedicate time to see that the gardens grow. So now put on your walking shoes, pack a lunch andspendEarthDay2017withflora,fauna,andfriendsat The Botanical Gardens! Learn the history of the gardens, visit the small gift shop, enjoy the various trails amid native verdure, or just relax beside Glenn’s Creek. Since each person takes in scenery at their own pace, the tables in the gazebo are saved for Givens residents until early afternoon so picnic at any time you like while at Asheville Botanical Gardens. Bring your own lunch. Bottled water will be provided. Transportation fee is $6 and a donation to the Botanical Gardens will be appreciated. Sign up sheet is posted and the deadline to sign-up is Wednesday, April 19th.

Announcement from IT: Ransonware and Scams

Over the past few years the instances of scams and ransomware have increased for all computer users. More recently telephone scams have had a dramatic increase in the public and even on our own campus These scams currently come in two forms. Either you will get a call on your home phone saying there is an issue on your computer or a number will pop up on your computer telling you to call them or all your data will be lost. If someone calls you out of the blue (Microsoft, IBM, Norton, or any company) and tells you there is an issue with your computer you just need to hang up. This isascam.Donotgivethemanyfinancialinformationor follow any of their instruction to let them on your

workstation to help you. If someone does call you and you are unsure please call the technology Helpdesk at 828-771-2626 and we will be happy to help guide you and answer any questions. The second scam currently circulating comes in many forms. One is a window that continually pops up asking you to call Microsoft. Another is a screen that pops up and voice that comes up telling you will lose all your data if you don’t call the number on your screen. If anything like this happens the safest thing to do currently is shut down your computer and call a local computer repair company to assist in the cleanup of your workstation. Do Not call the pop up on your computer. If this does occur to you and you are unsure on what you should do always feel free to call Technology Helpdesk 828-771-2626 for guidance on how you can get help.

A Tutorial on

In the Judaic-Christian tradition, Passover is an eight day festival, celebrated this year on April 10-18th, the same time as Holy Week. It commemorates the freeing of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.

What are the ways Jews and Christians remember this festival? How can we deepen our faith by celebrating this event? In what ways does the Seder meal influence this time?

A class/tutorial will be held on Wednesday, April 12th, from 10:30-11:30am in the Rising Classroom. Through presentations, music, and video we will learn about this important tradition. If you have questions or need additional information, call Ben Curry, a Chapel Guild member, at (828) 442-2394.

We shall also educate ourselves in understanding the Seder meal. A Passover seder is a service held at home as part of the Passover celebration. It is always observed on the first night of Passover, and in many homes on the second night as well. Participants use a book called a haggadah to lead the service, which consists of storytelling, a seder meal, and concluding prayers and songs.

Time will be given for discussion and questions. Additional resources will be available.

All Are Welcome!

PLANTINGS BY RESIDENTS

Many residents enjoy doing their own gardening; this is a wonderful activity and is something that is encouraged by Givens Estates. We recognize the fact that it is good therapy, beautifies our campus, and provides an opportunity to get outside. However, please be aware that we do have guidelines that need to be followed, see below. These are to be followed regardless of whether you purchased plants from a garden center, they were a gift from a friend or family member, or if you would like to transplant something from another area of campus. “Plantings by Residents: The planting of trees and shrubbery, creating new landscape beds, or altering existing beds must be approved in advance to ensure conformity with the overall landscaping plan. Also, new plantings must be approved in advance by the Grounds Director due to the danger of digging into underground utility wires. Vegetables can be grown in specially designated garden areas or in approved containers. Annuals may be planted in existing beds and should be maintained by residents. Givens Estates reserves the right to change resident plantings to reflect the landscape design of the campus, but will make every effort to discuss the change with the resident prior to changing or removing any resident-purchased plantings. Anything planted on the grounds becomes the property of Givens Estates.”- Page 36, Givens Estates Resident Handbook. The Grounds Department has received many questions about the availability of plant material adjacent to Buildings 1-10. Even though these buildings are unoccupied, Givens Estates maintains ownership of all plant material and may reuse these plants in other areas of campus. Removal of plant material in this area is not allowed, at this time. We will notify residents via the Gazette should this plant material become available at a later date. In the event this plant material does become available, and you would like to have some plants, this work will need to coordinate with the Grounds Department. We want to be sensitive to current and former residents who have already requested plant material and we also want to keep this area aesthetically pleasing. Please be respectful of your neighbors and of Givens Estates property, and do not remove plant material from existing landscapes.

About Dawn Chávez: In a December 2, 2014, Mountain Xpress article, Ms. Chávez is quoted as saying,"I have been visiting family in Asheville for the past fifteen years and have always been drawn to the beauty of the city, the mountains and the community." She is a native of New York City, and has a bachelor’s degree in natural resources from Cornell University and a master’s degree in environmental education from Montclair University. With over twenty years of experience of directing nonprofits, raising funds and inspiring volunteers she is continuing to make GreenWorks a major player in steering the environmental passions of volunteers in Asheville and Buncombe County. She enjoys birding, hiking, cycling, and paddling with her husband and their two children.

About Asheville GreenWorks: GreenWorks began in 1973 as Quality '76 to celebrate, cleanup and prepare for the nation's Bicentennial in 1976. Under the umbrella of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, it received a grant of $2,000 from Wachovia Bank. From 1976 to 2007, it was known as Quality Forward undertaking education, beautification, advocacy and stewardship projects. In 2007, the Board of Directors decided to name the organization, GreenWorks, to better reflect the work that was being accomplished. GreenWorks gives citizens the opportunity to improve their urban environment through grassroots, community-based volunteer projects. In 2016, 3,215 volunteers came together to do 216 river and roadside cleanups; collect by hand 33,170 pounds of litter; plant 374 trees in Buncombe County; collect at Hard-to-Recycle events 107,000 pounds of materials; fill 6 tractor trailers with 5,909 tires on Tire Amnesty Days; and engage 5,964 students in environmental education.
