Originally meeting at the old Brentwood Bay Inn – hence the name – today the Brentwood Bay Rotary Club moved

meets at the Waddling Dog Hotel, Tuesdays at noon.

As a small club with just 21 members, the meetings are relaxed and fun, with a variety of speakers and presentations providing both edu-cation and information.

The group’s major fundraising event is the annual Saanich Fall Fair, where members, spouses, family and friends all pitch in to run a concession affectionately called “The Sugar Shack,” selling candy fl oss, snow cones, hot dogs and soft ice cream. November and December also bring poinsettia sales, but the group was looking for a spring fundraiser and Antiques Re-Visited was the perfect event.

The fundraisers allow the Brentwood Bay Rotary to fulfi ll Rotary’s “Service Above Self” motto, providing funds to support the group’s local and international projects.

Current initiatives include the African Com-munity Project to assist in the economic and social development of the people in a small community just outside the city of Lusaka in Zambia. Last year, the Brentwood Bay Rotarians completed a clean water and educational proj-ect in Honduras, and a book drive produced 1,500 new and gently used books for countries in need to start libraries for children. The local group has supported Rotary International’s Im-munization Days world-wide to eradicate polio and Project Unity, a coalition of Greater Vic-toria Rotary Clubs providing micro loans and Kids Kits for AIDS orphans.

Locally, the group awards the annual Darcy Lazarz Scholarship at Stelly’s Secondary School and has supported Saanich Peninsula Hospital, the Terry Fox Run, Brentwood Bay Days, and the SenseABILITY Project, which provides a kit for parents of sight-impaired children that al-lows them to start teaching literacy skills to the children before they start school.

Turning 31 and going strong, the Brentwood Bay Rotary Club strives every day to help communities both at home and abroad.

In the Know:

• The 30-year-old Brentwood Bay Rotary Club meets Tuesdays at 12 p.m. in the Waddling Dog at the Quality Inn at Mount Newton Cross Road and Pat Bay Highway.

• Programs include guest speakers on a variety of community topics. For more information, call club president Jock Halliday at 250-544-1120 or email [email protected]

Brentwood Bay Rotary Club’s members are among Rotary International’s 1.2 million members in more than 200

countries committed to the philosophy of Ser-vice Above Self.

“In more than 34,000 clubs worldwide, you’ll fi nd members volunteering in communities at home and abroad to support education and job training, provide clean water, combat hun-ger, improve health and sanitation and eradi-cate polio,” explains the organization’s website, www.rotary.org

As an idea, Rotary began more than 100 years ago with the Rotary Club of Chicago, formed on Feb. 23, 1905 by attorney Paul P. Harris. The name stems from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offi ces.

“As Rotary grew, its mission expanded be-yond serving club members’ professional and social interests. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need...By July 1925, Ro-tary had grown to more than 2,000 clubs and an estimated 108,000 members. The organi-zation’s distinguished reputation attracted presidents, prime ministers and a host of other luminaries to its ranks – among them author Thomas Mann, diplomat Carlos P. Romulo, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer and composer Jean Sibelius.”

Today, in addition to the Brentwood Bay Rotary, the Capital Region is home to 11 clubs in the Capital Region, including three on the Saanich Peninsula, notes Brentwood Bay Ro-tary’s International Chair Darrell Jolly.

In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test, a code of ethics adopted by Rotary 11 years later:

• Is it the truth?

• Is it fair to all concerned?

• Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

• Will it be benefi cial to all concerned?

Rotary Club of Brentwood Bay

Do you have a few fam-ily heirlooms col-lecting dust in a cor-

ner? Perhaps you’ve always wondered about the possible history and value of a favou-rite necklace?

The Brentwood Bay Rotary Club has the perfect solution.

The Peninsula’s answer to the popular “Antiques Road-show” is coming to the Cen-tral Saanich Seniors’ Centre on Sunday, April 22 when the centre hosts the club’s Antiques Re-Visited.

Victoria’s antique experts will be on hand, donating their time for the fundraiser, says Andy Anderson, Brentwood Bay Rotary past-president and one of the event organizers.

The club had been look-ing for a spring fundraiser for members and upon hearing the local seniors’ centre need-ed help with its refurbishment plans, Antiques Re-Visited was born, thanks to help from former appraiser – and a for-mer Rotarian – Mike Wagnell, Anderson notes. “We hope to

raise $3,000 and we’ll be ec-static if we raise more,” he says. “We encourage the commu-nity to come support us as we support them. It’s an interest-ing event and it’s easy – I’ll be bringing my antiques!”

For the past 30 years, the registered not-for-profi t Cen-tral Saanich Senior Citizens’ Association has run the local Seniors’ Centre, next to the li-brary in Brentwood Bay. With a mandate to provide a wide range of innovative, enjoyable and cost-effective programs and services to the 50-plus population of the Saanich Peninsula, the centre strives to promote active living, healthy aging, life-long learning and community involvement.

With refurbishment of the centre needed, the local Ro-tarians stepped in to help. An-tiques Re-Visited ticket-holders can bring up to three items, including vintage jewellery, silver, toys, dolls and samplers, native arts and crafts, porce-lain, pottery and china, clocks and watches, stamps and coins,

militaria, paintings, prints and books.

To avoid line-ups, the event will be loosely divided into morning and afternoon ses-sions, Anderson says, noting that Seniors’ Centre volunteers will be on hand helping with the event and providing light refreshments.

The local project follows Rotary International’s phi-losophy of service both in the local community and interna-tionally.

Tickets – $25 for up to three items – are available from the Central Saanich Seniors’ Cen-tre, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday to Friday, from the Brentwood Bay Rotarians, Discount Print-ing, 105-2423 Beacon Ave., or at the door. Ample parking will be available at the site, with overfl ow parking avail-able at Brentwood Elementary School. Please note that buying or selling of appraised items at the event is not permitted.

Brentwood Bay – Come for a Visit!

Tucked along the Saanich Inlet, north of Victoria on the Saanich Peninsula, Brentwood Bay is home to a variety of residential neighbourhoods surrounding the town

centre, in addition to attractions such as the world-famous Butchart Gardens and Victoria Butterfl y Gardens.

At the village, residents and guests alike will fi nd accommo-dation, dining choices ranging from fi ne dining to quirky wa-terfront cafés, and all necessities.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the kayaking, biking, hiking and walking opportunities are many in the Brentwood Bay region, and an artifi cial reef is taking shape offshore, attracting divers who appreciate our clear waters and abundant sea life.

Visit Coles Bay Regional Park, a quiet refuge on Coles Bay in the Saanich Inlet, Gowlland Tod Provincial Park where south of Brentwood Bay by Tod Inlet, old mining and logging roads now provide more than 40 kilometres of hiking trails.

Nearby, John Dean Provincial Park on Mount Newton bor-ders both North Saanich and Central Saanich, just a few miles north of Brentwood Bay, while Butterfi eld Park on Mount Newton Cross Road at Thomson Place offers pleasant strolls through 5.3 hectares of what was once the South Hill poultry farm.

Also located here is the Brentwood Bay-Mill Bay ferry, a sce-nic – and convenient – 25-minute route across the Saanich In-let for those travelling to or from the Swartz Bay terminal and destinations north of Victoria. The ferry is an ideal option for those who prefer to bypass the drive through Victoria and the Westshore and over the Malahat.

Event highlights in the neighbourhood include Central Saan-ich Days, held at Centennial Park on August’s BC Day weekend and the Saanich Fall Fair each Labour Day weekend at the Saan-ich Fairgrounds.

Picturesque scenery abounds in Brentwood Bay.
