Shane Montgomery, the company’s director of marketing, says all but three employees are involved in racing. The staff at Quick Fuel Technology cover about every motorsports niche--from road to circle tracks (both dirt and asphalt) to drag racing. Jeeps and rock crawling is the avenue of choice for Montgomery and three other employees. So we’ve all got something going with motorsports, or going fast, explained Montgomery. It’s definitely the company culture. Beech Bend, a local amusement park in Bowling Green with a drag strip and circle track, is a popular place for Quick Fuel Technology employees during the summer when the park holds regular Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday races. It’s not uncommon for the track announcer to say: ’All of Quick Fuel’s here, it’s just like another day at work,’ said Montgomery with a laugh. The growth and success of Quick Fuel Technology, since it started 12 years ago, is something that Montgomery attributes to the company’s employees. All of the innovation you see in our company is the product of a team that is both experienced and involved in motorsports, related Montgomery. A Company Culture Fueled by Motorsports A Profile of Quick Fuel Technology by Gary McCoy Origins in the Reman Business Quick Fuel Technology started with a handful of employees in 1998 by Marvin Benoit, Marty Brown and a silent partner, who owned an RV dealership. Both Benoit and Brown had previously worked at Holley. They decided to take their 25-plus year of carburetor knowledge and what they knew about the market to start Quick Fuel, said Montgomery. Their main focus at the beginning was to fill a void in the marketplace," explained Montgomery of the company’s origins. "People were not doing performance rebuilds of carburetors or supplying other rebuilders with a quality part that was reliable. It was more performance geared than the OE stuff that you saw a lot of. So for their love of racing and the industry and carburetors, they decided it was something they could make a go at. Montgomery witnessed the history of the company first hand. He started out as a 16-year old high school co-op student, shortly after Quick Fuel Technology started in the back area of their silent partner’s RV store. He continued to work at the company through high school and then part-time while earning his degree at Western Kentucky University. By the time he graduated from college, the company had grown to the point where they could hire him full-time. As New Original Manufacturer Parts Use Declines, Auto Companies Attack Quality Alternatives Consumers and Environment Harmed by Groundless Attack on Recycled Automotive Parts As sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, original equipment parts manufacturers, faced with declining sales, will aimlessly attack quality parts alterna- tives. The latest campaign comes from Hyundai Motor America, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company of Korea. In a July 2010 press release, Hyundai pro- claims, Hyundai does not support the use or re-use of components removed or recycled from an existing collision- damaged vehicle. Thus, one can infer from their statement that Hyundai does not support the repair and subsequent use back on the road of any vehicle that has been involved in a prior collision. Unfortunately, automakers and new original equipment manufacturers (OEM) have a long history of erecting barriers to further their substantial hold on the vehicle parts replacement market. From withholding essential Vehicle Identifica- tion Number (VIN) information on the parts compatibility of various vehicle makes, models and years to the full court negative press campaign on the integrity of recycled parts, automakers stand as a road block to a more robust auto parts recycling network. According to the most recent Mitchell Repair Collision Data, OEM parts repre- sented 67.9% of all parts dollars specified by Mitchell-equipped estimators. This is yet another decline from previous quarters and reflects a continuing trend. The steady movement away from new OE parts has occurred as consumers and the collision repair industry become better educated on the quality part alternatives that are in the marketplace. To put into prospective this trend, the new OE parts usage for the same report was 74.4% as recently as the second quarter of 2008. At present, recycled auto parts are competing against a new OEM auto parts industry that command huge marketing and institutional advantages in the collision and mechanical auto repair markets. DOL Audits EmployersMust Be PreparedThe U.S. Department of Labor has initiatedstrategies to enforce regulations to includethe Fair Labor Standards Act Wage andHour rules. SESCO Labor Consultants hasexperienced more client investigations inthe past 18 months than they have inliterally 20 years or more providingprofessional service to their clients in thearea of Wage and Hour Accounting. Andas most know, SESCO was founded in 1945by an ex-Wage and Hour investigator, soour history is rooted in Wage and Hourand we consider ourselves as experts inWage and Hour Accounting.

The following is a common story whencontacted by a SESCO client:

We were contacted by the Department ofLabor and subsequently the Departmentof Labor conducted an investigation. Wecooperated with the investigator thinkingwe were doing nothing wrong. Theinvestigator has now submitted theirfindings which includes significant backwage liability. What do we do now? Weasked the investigator if we could appealand the investigator told us no. Theinvestigator told us that if we do not paythe back wages immediately, that eachemployee will receive a letter notifyingthem of their rights to contact an attorneyand sue us. We feel trapped and dontknow where to turn.

This conversation is unfortunately toocommon, and it is extremely accurate. Weknow that investigators are trained tostrong arm employers to pay bythreatening to inform employees of theirrights. This is a very effective tactic in thatthrough a private lawsuit, employees areavailable for liquidated damages whichincludes two (2) years back wage liability, two (2) years liquidated damages, plus theemployer must pay employee attorney fees which many times the attorney fees aremore than the actual damages.

So what should employers do whencontacted by the Wage and Hour Divi-sion/investigator?

Be cooperative, do not become adversarialand contact SESCO.

SESCO will help coordinate the efforts ofthe investigator. It is critical to inform theinvestigator that there is a professionallooking over their shoulders. We mustknow that investigators are under highstress to include quotas, closing caseswithin specific time limits and incentedbased on back wage collections. We mustalso know that investigators, justbecause they work for the government, are not necessarily morally correct, want todo whats fair and, frankly, not experts inWage and Hour Accounting. Most of thecases we represent are reduced orcompletely thrown out. Employers mustunderstand that investigators are not

intentionally misapplying the regulations, but we must know that they may not becompletely trained or thoroughly aware orapply applicable regulations to includepartial exemptions that employers may takeadvantage.

SESCO may also conduct an initial auditso that we can prepare for and understandwhat the investigator may find. However, many times we will simply allow theinvestigator to conduct their work andthen review, assess and consider theirfindings. This is where we can challengefindings where appropriate, therebyreducing back wage liability.

Employers must know that there is helpavailable, help is affordable and certainlyretainer clients receive such help andassistance at no charge by telephone. Wefully expect more enforcement action, so itis critical that employers be aware, beprepared and contact SESCO immediatelyto manage and hold investigators account-able.

In summary, the current U.S. LaborSecretary, Hilda Solis, promised torefocus the agent on its importantresponsibilities. The truth is they haveincreased the Department of Laborinvestigator staff by a whopping 33%.Your organization may be the next target.

SESCO clients may contact us to receive afree copy of What To Do Should The

Wage and Hour Investigator Arrive atYour Place of Business. "

by Mohammad Samii, Sammy's Auto-Electric Service, Inc., ASE, SAEAUTO ELECTRIC CORNER

It has beensaid that toincrease yourrevenue, onecan increasesales, increaseprices, orreduce fixedcosts and/orexpenses.While eachhas its ownmerit,

increasing prices to compensate for theincreased cost of doing business is one ofthose things that small electrical rebuildersfail to do, or do not do often enough.Thats something I think is worth consid-ering.

Large rebuilders and suppliers have abetter grip on pricing, as they have abetter understanding of their market andknow where to keep their prices to meettheir profit margins and also be competi-tive in a very competitive market such asrotating electrical.

Small and custom rebuilders seem to lackthe resources for a comprehensive marketstudy, thus they usually set their pricesbased on parts and labor per unit, and attimes, even lower.

Considering the nature of custom rebuild-ing and auto electrics, and given the priceof parts for certain items such as antique/classic starters and generators that are stillin the realm of small electrical rebuilders, increasing your prices to reflect the costbased on market value is absolutelyessential.

Almost every rebuilder is aware of the 3-fold or 4-fold price hikes for items such asfield coils and generator armatures inrecent years. Even so, there is an inherenthesitancy among some to basically absorbthe cost and give the work away.

Pricing units that cannot be easilyobtained or that require special skills torebuild, set up, and run, is something thatgoes beyond parts and labor. For this youshould set your prices to reflect theirvalue.

Antique/classic generators are only anexample. There are many such unitsparticularly industrial application that a lotof small rebuilders specialize inandthese are the units that should be pricedbased on their value, and not the parts orlabor it took to fix it. Of course this is myopinion.

2004 Mercury MountaineerIt has been a general belief among manytechnicians that certain aftermarketalternators for applications such as Ford,Honda, Subaru, Toyota, etc., will not workproperly and must be purchased OE or OE-reman from the dealers.

Of course, this statement goes against thegrain of our beliefs that have providedfunctional alternators to the aftermarket fordecades. Unfortunately there are caseswhere there is indeed a problem withaftermarket alternators. Compatibility is anissue. It will charge but the warning lightremains lit. The following is one of thosecases:

We had a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer(Premier version, 4.6L V-8, AWD) come tous on referral. The owner had had analternator replaced, but the warning lightwas staying on, with the message centerdisplaying a Check Charging Systemmessage.

The car had been taken to a Ford Dealerwho dismissed the existing alternator anddetermined (I dont know howmaybethey saw the aftermarket label) that thevehicle needed an OE alternator. Since thisdid not sit well with the owner, the car wastaken to another shop who suggested anew PCM was necessary! Going back tothe original shop that had replaced thealternator, she was told they couldn't doanything else about her vehicle because ofa peculiar wiring problem, and thats whenwe were recommended to look into theproblem.

The 7773 (a 4-G) alternator had an after-market regulator. Looking up the applica-tions on Lester KwikFinder, I found a 2005model using the very similar alternator(#8475 - Figure 1) but with a VP typeregulator (VP4L2U-10C359-AA). Could itbe this vehicle, albeit a 2004, needed a VPregulator to turn the warning light off? Orwas it the nature of this aftermarketregulator to not being compatible with the

system? One way to find out was to takethe alternator off, inspect it, and install thecorrect OE regulator. Once this was doneand the unit was re-installed on thevehicle, it charged fine and turned thewarning light off with no fault messagewhatsoever!

Had the dealers installed their ownalternator, or the shop in question returnedthe reman alternator to the part store andpurchased one from the dealer, it isobvious that the warning light would havegone off and stayed off. This would be atrue testament of the belief that theaftermarket unit didn't work properly onthis applicationand they would havebeen correct on their assumption.

My support of our industry and itsproducts non-withstanding, it is verydifficult to convince average techniciansabout the superiority of aftermarketproducts while their own experience hasbeen to the contrary. There are manyrebuilders among us who are not quitefamiliar with the newer technologies, proper testing procedures, and theirapproach to rebuilding is just putting in anew aftermarket regulator to cover thebases. Well, that is not enough and it doesnot work in every case these days.Selecting the right regulator is of theutmost importance, but of course youhave to be familiar with the system toselect the right part!

The myth of the PCM determining the operationalfrequency of the VP-type regulators (as comparedto non-VP) and deciding to turn the warning lightoff, is one of those tales that abound in certaincircles and is quite untrue. As in the abovesample, there is no provision for a frequencyinput to the PCM. (Figure 2)

Regulator compatibility issues are one of thesubjects I will be discussing during APRAsSurvive & Thrive Electrical Clinic in Las Vegas onOctober 30th. I will show simple methods andmeasurements that can help you to easily verifythe regulators compatibility in similar cases likethe above. More about this at the Clinic!

Repairs without the Right PartsWe had a 1998 Ford Escort come to us on referralfor an inoperative A/C. The compressor clutchwould not get the power to energize. The shopthat worked on the air-conditioning systemverified that the system was full, and by allaccounts it should be operational.

For a while now, Ford has combined a few relayssuch as a low and high cooling fan speed, fuelpump, PCM power and A/C clutch into a PCMcontrolled Constant Control Relay Module, or CCRM. Inthe above car, we had all the inputs and outputs from thismodule with the exception of the A/C clutch. PCM input

to the modulewas alsochecked andfound to bepresent anytimethe A/C wasturned on, sowhat we neededwas a newmodule (Fig 3).

Our local FordDealer wascalled andinformed us thatthis module, costing over$200, is on

national back order, but a batch of 100 or so was on theschedule to be released sometime soon! That of coursewas no help and getting a used one from the salvage yardor eBay was something I was not inclined to consider dueto uncertain quality issues.

Scratching my head, I entertained the idea that it wasprobably possible to install an auxiliary Bosch-type relay, wire it up into the system and use the very same PCMcontrol to turn it off and on. The schematics of the CCRMwere pulled up from www.AutoElectricPro.com and oncethe in and out pins of the relay were identified (Figure 4),a relay was indeed wired up and the A/C was put backinto operation.

The fact was briefly explained to the customer and a notewas made that if the rest of the module ever failed, thenthe alternative would be a replacement, but for now theA/C was working. This trick allowed us to get the vehicleoperational without a module that was unavailable.

Sables Alternator FailureWe had this 1999 Mercury Sable (a Ford Taurus twin) thatthe owner, a young lady passing through on her way to anearby University, saw an abnormal indication, and verywisely decided to have the car looked at before she wentany further down the highway.

She said the battery light came on and then went off, butlater on the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake) and Airbag lightstayed on for a while. The tachometer also was starting tofade. Thats when she decided to have the car looked atbefore she went any further.

Upon checking the charging system, I noticed the voltagewas low, but it was charging a little and there was not abad alternator ripple indication...meaning we did not havea bad diode or stator.

In cases like this, going by the symptoms explained to us,usually there is not much else to do other than take thealternator off and visually inspect the condition of thebrushes and slip rings, given there are no power orground problems.

Once thealternator wasremoved andthe regulatorwas taken out,I noticed thefield brush wasalmost worn tothe last bit, barely makinga connectionto a very wornand groovedslip ring (Fig.5). Customerwas informed, a reman 7770 alternator was installed, andafter charging the battery and servicing the cable-ends, itwas delivered.

The point I would like to make is the fact the Anti-LockBrake Control Module and Supplemental Restraint Systemmodules, called Electronic Crash Unit in the above car,has a much more precise monitor over the system voltagethan the alternator light. In cases like that where thealternator is barely working, it has probably enough toturn the battery light off, but ABS and Airbag system thatneed adequate power for proper operation, watch thesystem voltage more closely and warn the driver if theysee any under-voltage condition, such as it was in theabove case. We have seen it quite often that some othercontrol modules pick up any abnormal voltage (low or

In looking back on the company's history, Montgomerybelieves Quick Fuel's initial growth was due to their abilityto quickly manufacture small parts for carburetor modifi-ers and others who were building carburetors. Much ofwhat Quick Fuel built were service parts such as jets, needles, power valves, and diaphragms.

YouYouY know there's good money if it's a quality part, explainedMontgomery. It (service parts) kind of builtthe rest of the business to enable us to actually buildcarburetors and rebuild cores.

As a result of their success, Montgomery explained thatQuick Fuel Technology was able to put money back intothe business to grow it to where it is now a stand-alonecarburetor manufacturer. He says this has helped fundtooling and other capital expenses in order to expand theirproductproductprod offerings.

The company has come a long way from of its cozy,elbow-to-elbow RV dealership days. They now occupy

a state-of-the-art facility in Bowling Green that encom-passes some 20,000 sq. feet of space for manufacturing, warehouse and offices.

While Quick Fuel Technology'l Technology'l T s origins are in theremanufacturing business, Montgomery says theirbusiness is slowly moving away from that. It just seemslike there is a shortage of cores and some of it is no longera quality piece anymore. Or the cores are being snatchedup by people who are doing a standard OE rebuild, related Montgomery.mery.mer So we've focused more on newproducts, because we have all the tooling to cast our ownparts fors fors f brand new carbuarbuar retors.

He says Quick Fuel Technology has evolved. Havingstarted out entirely focused on reman, that segment oftheir business now represents about 20 percent. Mont-gomery says they've also noticed the same trend withtheir competitors. For whatever reason the carburecarburecar torrebuilding industry is somewhat going away, he said.

New PartsFor new parts, Quick Fuel Technology introduced itsSuper Street line of carburetors in 2005. This applicationspecific line catered to the enthusiast that wanted thebest carburarburar etor forr forr f the money while refusrefusref ing to compro-mise street manners. Drawing fromg fromg f Quick FuelTechnology's race track experience, they employed manyfeatures that were normally found on much pricier racecarburetors. Their line is about half the price of competi-tors.

In 2009 Quick Fuel Technology launched the QFX-Series.This design incorporates significant race engineered mainbody upgrades. Each carburetor is individually hand-assembled and engine tested.

While this year, the company introduced two newcarburetor series. The RaceQ is a small flanl flanl f ge drag racecarburetor, while the Hot Rod series carburetor is QuickFuel Technology's answer to the needs of street machines(from muscle cars to street rods).

For Montgomery aMontgomery aMontgomer ll the new products and innovations goback to the company's philosophy: To pTo pT rovide the bestproduct, the best customer service, at the best possibleprice.

He recognizes that it is not always possible to do all three, but the company works hard to balance these competinginterests.

Montgomery says they strive to put customer service atthe top of the list. We wWe wW ant to make sure the customergets what he wants, when we said he would get it by, aby, aby ndthat he's happy with the price, he explains.

He says Quick Fuel Technology believes that when youdo the best you can to take care of customers, then youcan make sound business decisions based on the marketaround you.

One of the ways that Quick Fuel Technology takes care ofits customer is by having a dedicated technical servicedepartment. It's funny, people call us and they're alwaysshocked that they get a live body on the phone, explainsMontgomery.

Quick Fuel Technology has four inside sales and techservice professiprofessiprof onals. "It's the same four guys everyday," said Montgomery oomery oomer f the team.

We'We'W ve got really good guys on the phone that want tosee your car work better, get fixed or go faster, faster, faster heexplains.

Montgomery offers this piece of advice to other compa-nies: If you are a company that is very kery ker nowledgeable inyour product line and you're doing it well, then you needto express that to your customers. Let them know you areavailable to talk to and to let them pick your brain.

Getting the Word OutWhile Quick Fuel Technologyl Technologyl T has been successful withtheir newly revamped website that was launched inOctober 2009 and using social media through Facebook,Montgomery says print media is still their strongestavenue of marketing. He says their annual catalog is a bigsuccess and that production of the book continues togrow at 25 to 30 percent each year.

People still want to get their hands on something to readwhether it's our catalog or editorial copy they read in amagazine, saidMontgomery. Quick Fuel advertises inkey magazines and they provide products to editors fordifferent builds they are working on.

Striking a balance between electronic and print venues issomething that Montgomery says he will continue towork on. He believes that in coming years more and morepeople will be getting their information from the web, soinvesting in more digital advertising will be necessary.

Montgomery says he's enjoyed his time with Quick FuelTechnology. I can say that everywhere I've gone withthe company, wcompany, wcompany hether it be at a trade show or a race, I'vejust had an absolute blast being around the people thatwemeet.

He's particularly enjoyed the opportunity to be mentoredby Benoit. Being with Marvin, he's such a card andeveryone knows him. There's never a stranger anywherethat you go.

So if you run into vehicles with these sorts of indicationsit is a good possibility that the alternator might be at fault, even if its warning light has not come on yet. Of coursewith more advanced scan tools you can access themodules and read the codes that relate to abnormalvoltages seen by the modules.

Well, that is enough for this issue. Please take the time toregister today for the Survive & Thrive Electrical Clinic inLas Vegas. There is a great program in store for you. UntilI see you again, keep up the good work.

Bosch is a LeadingProvider of RemanVehicle PartsCost-Effective and EnvironmentallyFriendly Alternatives

An increasing number of workshops relyupon remanufactured Bosch products tocarry out value-driven repairs. BoschRemanufacturing offers approx. 9000vehicle parts from 27 product groups.Bosch is a leading provider of industriallyremanufactured products such as starters, alternators, air conditioner compressors, brake calipers, ignition distributors, dieselinjection pumps and many other compo-nents. Remanufactured vehicle parts donot merely represent a cost-effectivealternative for end customers; they alsoprotect the environment, as the bulk of theoriginal product is retained. This results ina lower consumption of raw materials andlower CO2 emissions than would be thecase with new products.

Increasing Quantity of Reman Partson the MarketOver the last few years, the demand forhigh-quality remanufacturing parts forvehicle repairs has increased on aninternational scale. Today, the exchangemarket in the US now has a share of almost90 percent. The market segment is alsocontinuing to expand in Europe and at aconsiderably higher growth rate than thewhole parts market, which is generallystagnating. Bosch expects that the

remanufacturing market will grow to 30million products per year in Europe by2015. The Bosch Exchange replacementparts program supports this long-termtrend with a value-driven vehicle repairservice that conserves resources.

First-Class Quality PartsWhen carrying out vehicle repairs, theworkshop can replace a defective part witha new part or use a remanufactured part. For owners of older cars in particular it isoften not worth purchasing new compo-nents.

All replacement parts are reconditioned inBosch plants in line with the highestquality standards. The replacementprogram operates as a closed cycle. Thanks to efficient logistics, the productsare available to the customer withoutdelay. Once the workshop has identified adefective part, an identical yet recondi-tioned part is ordered and installed. Thedefective component is returned in itsoriginal packaging to Bosch for industrialconditioning. Technical specialistscompletely dismantle the product, clean it,and replace any severely worn out andsafety-relevant parts before reassemblingit. The remanufactured part undergoes astringent testing and quality controlprocess at Bosch before it is put back intocirculation and is once more madeavailable to the customer.Bosch applies the same high qualitystandards to remanufactured parts as itdoes to newly manufactured products.

Therefore the same two-year guarantee isalso offered on remanufactured parts. Theproduct also costs the end customeraround 30 to 40 percent less than a newpart. The comprehensive range of prod-ucts includes components for complexmodern gasoline and diesel injectionsystems too. The development phasetakes into account the later potential forremanufacturing.

Replacement Parts Protect theEnvironment and Avoid CO2EmissionsIn addition to cost efficiency, environmen-tal protection and the conservation ofresources are also good reasons to useremanufactured parts in value-drivenvehicle repairs. Starter and alternatorreplacements in classic cars, for example, have been carried out at the Bosch plant inGöttingen, Germany since 1965. Recondi-tioning used parts requires less energythan manufacturing new parts. In 2009Bosch remanufactured 2.5 million parts, resulting in 23,000 tons less of CO2, than ifnew products had been manufactured.Studies have shown that one hectare offorest absorbs an average of 13 tons ofCO2 each year. This saving by Bosch of23,000 tons of CO2 is equivalent to a forestarea covering 1923 hectares.

Global Range with RegionalStructuresWhen working in the replacement partbusiness, the process always requires aflow of goods in two directions, making

the procedure more complicated. It is notonly essential to ensure the correctreplacement part is sent to the vehicleparts dealer or workshop as quickly aspossible, but it must also be ensured thatthe used part is then quickly and reliablysent to the manufacturer for repair.Regional structures are therefore requiredto ensure the process runs smoothly.Bosch processes the replacement partswithin a global network. This means thatthe market leader-and reliable partner-isable to provide parts dealers and vehicleworkshops worldwide with an extensiverange of products for replacement vehicleparts locally.

Returning the Used Part in theOriginal Packaging of theReplacement PartThe simple, well-organized return systemwith refund that Bosch has introducedensures the process runs as smoothly aspossible. By providing clear returnconditions and implementing the Back-in-Box process of returning the used part inthe original Bosch packaging of thereplacement part, a fast and reliableprocedure is guaranteed. This also meansthat the packaging is not disposed of butis re-used. Returning the replaced usedpart in its original packaging also protectsthe part during transportation. Catalogs invarious languages for the full programtogether with a detailed returns list enablethe customer to easily identify theexchange part required.Source: Robert Bosch GmbH, May 2010
