NEHEMIAH SERMON SERIES:BUILDING THE FUTURE

Visualise for a moment the broken wall of someone’s life, a family, perhaps a cell, or a city that needs to be restored back to strength and purpose again. Jerusalem, the city of God, had lain in ruins for 150 years with several failed reform attempts. Finally, God called Nehemiah to lead a rebuilding project of both the city and the people. This is the project in his memoirs.

Nehemiah was outwardly a civil servant, but inwardly a servant of God. This dual identity illustrates how a marketplace witness plays a crucial role in accomplishing God’s purposes. Nehemiah’s co-worker was Ezra, a priest and teacher working with Scriptures. The stories of the two are interwoven in a seamless fabric of vocational calling. God’s people needed the work of both. We still do. God uses all manner of people in all manner of places doing all manner of work. He is not limited by your vocation. In fact, God has placed you where you are for a purpose.

When Nehemiah returns to Jerusalem, he recognises that there is more to build than just the city – the people of Israel are also in need of spiritual renewal. Accordingly, the book of Nehemiah has two divisions:

Chapters 1-6 focus on God’s work through Nehemiah and the people to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Enemies attacked through hopelessness, anger, doubts, intimidation, fears – in order to hold them back and hinder their progress. Nehemiah, as a type of Christ, led the people to complete their task of rebuilding as directed by God.

Chapters 7-13 focus on God’s work in the hearts of the people. Attention was given to establishing leadership and structure, purity of the people and their commitment to God and His Word. Nehemiah called the people into a life of devotion to God alone.

As a church, we are rebuilding so that we can make disciples who are end-time ready. We desire to be effective Kingdom-agents in the Father’s hands to impact the world around us. But it starts with us as individuals seeking God for the rebuilding that is needed in our hearts and lives, in order that we may fulfil His purposes in our generation.

In this Building the Future sermon series, discover how we can trust God to lead and empower us to overcome setbacks or baggage from the past in building our own lives, the broken lives around us, His church and His Kingdom!
