There was once a wise old man who lived in a city where he was beloved and admired by the townspeople for his intelligent advice and words of wisdom and guidance.

One day, a might warrior arrived in the city and stated that he wished to debate with the wise man in order to increase his fame.

The townspeople were against the idea but the old man remained firm in his decision to rise to the challenge.

The entire city gathered in a designated place and the young warrior began debating with the old man, the warrior commenced throwing rocks in the old man’s direction, spat in his face and then hurled every insult imaginable at him.

The day passed and the warrior continued provoking the old man who remained as impassive as ever. Towards the end of the afternoon, the warrior was exhausted and humiliated, and he left.

The townspeople approached the wise

old man and asked him how he managed to withstand all the insults and provocations. They were terribly disturbed as to why he had not responded or stood up for himself.

The man replied, “If someone gives you a gift and you do not accept it, the gift remains the property of the one who tried to deliver it.” The man continued, “The same goes for anger, envy and insults, when they are not accepted, when they are ignored, they continue to belong to the one who spoke them!”

A cup of beet juice a day, or a generous helping of green vegetables, may help lower blood pressure, a new British study finds.

The findings come from a small

study of 15 men and women with high blood pressure, published in the journal Hypertension on April 15.

Researchers from Queen Mary University of London, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry found that people who drank 250 mL of nitrate-rich beet juice a day experienced blood pressure reductions of around 10 mm Hg. The reduction was highest around three to six hours after imbibing the beet juice, but the effect lasted 24 hours later.

While beets contain heart-healthy compounds like vitamins C and K, fiber and polyphenols, scientists say it’s the high nitrate content that’s likely responsible for the ability to reduce blood pressure.

include lettuce, cabbage, and fennel, which researchers say are likely to have the same effect.

“I don’t think anybody would have liked it if we’d juiced lettuce leaves and cabbage,” lead researcher Amrita Ahluwalia told WebMD. “Beetroot isn’t unique in being able to alter the

cardiovascular system. Rocket [arugula] has a very high inorganic nitrate content; fennel has a high inorganic content.”

In prior research, scientists from Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia, found that within hours of drinking beet juice, a group of healthy men saw their blood pressure drop by an average of four to five points. The study was published in December in Nutrition Journal.

Back in the days when Old English was spoken, the “k” in these sorts of words was not silent, so they would be pronounced as k’nife, k’night, and so on. This pronunciation was even common in the time of William Shakespeare! At some point, people decided that this sort of articulation was too cumbersome, so they stopped voicing the beginning consonant! The same thing happened with “gn” words such as gnome and gnarled. However, other Germanic languages such as German, Swedish, and Dutch kept the “k” and still pronounce it to this day.

This phenomenon occurred with other consonant clusters too. Would you believe that the word ‘ring’ used to be spelled ‘h-r-i-n-g’? Once enunciation of the beginning consonant was ceased, the spelling was changed altogether! This also happened with words like hlud (loud), hnutu (nut), and hwenne (when). Even so, this sort of spelling alteration could not occur for words like knight and know, because then you would never be able to distinguish them from “night” and “now”!
