BE WISE A NEW MESSAGE SERIES STARTING SUN, 28 APR

INTRODUCTION TO 1 CORINTHIANS

The Church in Corinth was founded by Paul in his second missionary journey and the Apostle spent 18 months mentoring and growing the Church. To him, this Church was his special spiritual baby and its well-being was precious to him. Five years after Paul left this church to establish other churches in Asia Minor, he received a letter from the Corinthian leaders seeking for advice concerning certain pressing matters (7:1). Paul’s response was the book of 1 Corinthians.

The Church at Corinth was a pastor’s worst nightmare. Instead of being a light to the dark world of sexual licentiousness, carnal excesses and selfish living, the Church was very much like the world. It was riddled with problems: disunity, poor interpersonal relationship, incest, sexual immorality, marital issues, law suits, impropriety during the Lord’s Supper, abuse of personal freedom, and poor exercise of spiritual gifts. The Apostle wrote back with godly advice from a broken heart to a Church that was still much loved and richly endowed by God.

1 Corinthians is a highly practical book filled with godly wisdom on how believers ought to conduct themselves in a corrupt and sinful world. Paul has a very clear message to the Corinthian believers: God’s wisdom applied to worldly problems will produce supernatural results! This message is also timely for us today as we live in a culture where truth and morality is relative and where the ends often justify the means.

Let’s be wise and learn from 1 Corinthians on how to live righteously for the Lord!
