The Lathe/Turning Workshops in Lockport at Rich Rossio’s were, again, a hit. Look for some of those projects in the next few Show &Tell’s!

On the 25th we toured Dick Secrest’s nifty new workshop. That was followed by a delicious brunch at the Kirkland Family Restaurant. All 29 of us headed to the Kirkland Sawmill for a special tour and demonstration hosted by owner Ron Sester and staff.

A most rewarding day, in a variety of ways. Saw new things, learned more about wood and got to know some of our newer members a little better and share the hospitality of a cozy small town café. All in all, an A++ day!!!

April is going to be equally packed with things to do, places to go and opportunities to learn.

On the 4th we welcome Bob Willis who will introduce us to Intarsia.

April 15th is the Field Trip & Wood Sale at Der Holtzmacher in Sycamore. Host Michael Holtz will give us a look at his factory and the marvelous creations we glimpsed at in February.

April 22nd members are invited to one or both of the Scroll Saw Workshops taught by Pat Lapori, of the Chicagoland Scrollers.

Around The Neighborhood...

Ron Gilkerson recently spent an evening with the Boy Scout members of Troop 21 at Holy Cross Church in Batavia. Scoutmaster Jeff Ball invited Ron to come give the Troop a talk on woodworking and some ideas of the many facets and variations of the craft there are to be experienced. He demoed the making of Pull Tops and, as usual, they were a big hit with all!

Now that it is getting warmer and those garage doors are being flung wide open to usher in another season of projects, thought I would remind you of the wealth of plans and information on the web.

Many sites offer full, printable plans free for the downloading! Everything from swings and gliders to whole rooms of furniture, in every style imaginable.

If you have access to a computer and a printer, you have the ability to partake of all this information with a click of a mouse! How cool is that? I was tripping around and found, for instance, more plans for garden benches than most of us would have lawns to hold. The simple, the sublime and the elegant and all I had to do was say “Print” and they were mine!!! Still more available for pennies and the hardest part of obtaining them is having to decide which one you like best!

Here are just a few of those addresses, in no particular order and without any pros or cons as to my opinion of what they have to offer but, if you have a minute, check them out and see what wonders you can find. It is well worth the effort.

Ah, Spring and the Sweet Scent of Sawdust!

Speaking of Sawdust… ...While you are in the workshop making plans for that next great project, keep in mind

that sawdust, as much as we love it, is many things. Not only does it’s fragrance vary, from the light and fresh through warm and musky all the way to “Phewy!”, but it’s toxic powers vary too. While you are surfing around, you might want to take in some more sobering sites along the way. It is amazing what one can learn!

For instance, did you know that the lovely Purpleheart wood and sawdust commonly causes nausea or malaise or that the leaves/barks/sawdust of BEECH quite often causes not only sensitivity to the eyes/nose/respiratory system but also CANCER???? It pays to know what you are working with and what the hazards to yourself and your family are if proper ventilation and safety equipment is not used.

FOR SALE Delta Q3 18" Variable Speed Scroll Saw. It is in perfect condition. I've only used it twice. I think I purchased it in 1998 for $450. I think I would take $150 for it. I bought it when I really needed a

bandsaw. Soon realized it and eventually bought the bandsaw relegating the scrollsaw to a corner to collect dust.

Has stand and might be available for pick up at the April meeting, if need be.

FVWWC Silent Auction At the April meeting, due to a multitude of requests, we will have the 45° Miter Cutter up for bids. This machine is valued at $189 and we will start the bidding at $50.

This is the answer to making perfect corner cuts each and every time!

• Howard Van Valzah: End Table in Walnut, Black Limba & Parquet Flooring with a Dark Walnut stain and Lacquer finish. • John Winton: Mini Pens of Corian, Purpleheart, Teak, Bubinga and Zecate with friction finish and a Turned Bowl of unfinished Hickory. • Len Swanson: Turned Plate of Purpleheart and a Trivet of Cherry.
