Editor's CornerSlowly but surely, we’re progressing towards the high season.

With the legislative force readjusting, mending, bending and repairing wherever possible, Thailand is in for changes.

In our own Hua Hin we have already experienced a wave of the beach clean up as well as restrictions and adjustments. Most of them for the best.

Our mayor addressed a Skal ( The Hotelier Club) meeting where he explained the infrastructural plans, roads, water reservoirs and housing rules and regulations.

At APPROACH we also decided to go for a clean-up, with fresh contents and more interesting themes such as fashion, cosmetics, thus giving it a feminine touch as well.

We’ve also added a few pages and we’re generally upgrading the image of our publication.

Two months ago, APPROACH published an article written by a young Thai lady who was concerned about the erosion on Thai coasts. Recently, the Thai government has allocated about 380 Milllion Baht for the prevention of soil erosion along our seashores. Furthermore, the Transport Ministry’s Marine Department will be allocated 4.7 billion baht from the 2015 national budget, of which about 3 billion baht will be allocated to the dredging of rivers and seafronts and protection of erosion endangered coast lines and beaches. Dareen was right.

It was time for action. An announcement from the Foreign Business Office drew my attention: “Amendments to the Foreign Business Act to be proposed to Cabinet.” In simple English this means : “The amendments will focus on compromise, to ensure fair competition for Thai and

foreign investors alike, facilitating further business growth and preventing nominee problems.” It was added that the amended law should make the environment friendlier for foreign investors

and streamline business regulations. Light on the horizon for foreign investors.

Anyway......................

THE RUMOR HAS IT THAT...... • Central will be building a mall on the corner of Soi 112 and Petschkasem Road

• Peter Suay has sacked the fifth nurse taking care of him because she can ́t cook toad in a hole • There will be a Tennis Academy in Hua Hin

• Lars C will soon be driving the most exquisite and exclusive Jeep CJ7 in town • Foreigners will be able to own more than 49% of their Thai companies

• A Novemberfest will be spread all over Hua Hin with German Paulaner Festbier • The Hell’s Angels Harley club will be passing through town on October 12 with 60 bikers

• APPROACH will make November and December issues their showcase publications; make sure you advertise.

Again, in September there was a Classical highlight accompanied by a buffet dinner and a musical note from more recent composers sung by a delightful soprano from Japan, Haruna Tsuchiya.

Our returning master cellist Stefanie Waegner, a professor at Mahidol University and absolvent of the Bamberg University, performed classical partitures accompanied by top pianists from her school.

Anant Changwaiwit, first prize winner of the Thailand Mozart International Competition 2014 excelled in the delicate sections with Stefanie. Tanutt Tanavoravongsa, a runner up in the Mozart competition exhibited several brilliantly played virtuous and impressive piano pieces before both pianists ended with compositions of His Majesty The King Bhumipol.

Haruna Tsuchiya, a professor, acting coach and voice teacher at Mahidol, treated the audience with compositions of George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Irving Berlin and other famous musical composers. All in all a night to remember.

Classical concerts at the Hyatt are monthly and announced through APPROACH in the magazine and APPROACH News Letter per Email. If you want to be notified, please write to [email protected] and you will be discretely added to our list on our Database.

Motorbikes make the traffic more chaotic then what we are used to from back home. Traffic rules are different and the other users of the road frequently do things that you did not expect at all.

So no matter how good you drive yourself, you may be involved in an accident.

If that happens, it is a comfortable feeling to know that 1 phone call is enough to count on the service and back-up of a professional insurance company that will act immediately (they will send a surveyor to the spot) but also takes care for a quick and efficient claim handling.

There are various types of insurances:

Compulsory Third Party Liability (CTPL)

This compulsory insurance, every motor vehicle must have.

The premium is very cheap, 645 baht for a 4 door and 967 baht for a 2 door vehicle.

This insurance only covers for bodily injury (max 50,000 baht for the Third Party) or death (max 200,000 baht for a Third party). Third party property damage or damage to your own car is not covered.

It is extremely risky to drive around with only this insurance!

The following insurances are voluntary:

3rd class – This insurance is similar to the Third Party Liability insurance as we know it from Europe. It covers Third Party property damage and medical expenses. Besides that it provides coverage for medical expenses for the driver and passengers of your own car and also a bail bond coverage.

2nd class – Coverage is the same as 3rd

Class 3 + Compulsary – Same coverage as 3rd class, but also damage of your own car is covered, only in case of a collision with another motor vehicle of which the identity

is known.

Class 2 + Compulsary – Same coverage as 3 + 1, but

including fire and theft of your own car.

1st class – The best available insurance, comparable to the All Risks or Fully Comprehensive as we know it from Europe.

Hua Hin Real Estate isSound Investment

Hua Hin is Thailand’s most aristocratic town and is quickly becoming a mecca for

international investors.

With its rapidly developing infrastructure, booming tourism market, as well as its central

ASEAN location, Thailand is consistently named as one of the most attractive places in

the world to invest.

1: Affordability in a major market The real estate prices in Hua Hin are much lower than other major

markets in the country, especially in neighbouring areas such as Khao Takiab, Tap Tai and Sam Roi Yod. If you are willing to be located five to ten minutes away from downtown

Hua Hin, it is possible to negotiate land down to under 1.5 million baht per rai (1600 M2). Just a half hour away from

downtown you can get land as low as 400k per Rai.

2: Location, location, location Located only two and a half hours away by Bangkok by car, Hua Hin is already one

of the most accessible beach destinations in the country and is only getting easier to reach due to its peaceful laid

back atmosphere and highway connecting the capital with Hua Hin.

3: The High Speed Rail With the upcoming implementation of a high speed train line, Hua Hin will

soon be on a direct route from Southern China and just a 45 minute ride from Thailand’s largest international

airport. The project is predicted to kick the Hua Hin’s development into high gear, putting it on the map as not only a new international tourism destination but a new,

ultra-convenient weekend getaway for Bangkok residents and expats as well.

TOP 10 REASONS WHY HUA HIN IS THE BEST REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT IN THAILAND

APPROACH MAGAZINE - FINANCE

4: Soi 112 in Hua Hin now connects the town to the by pass highway. Soi 112 is a four-lane fast-lane, connecting downtown Hua Hin directly to the highway. The road is practically finished and fully paved. Finishing touches will be completed by mid October. Plot prices are already on the rise but still affordable. Once Soi 112 starts to take real form it is predicted to become one of the busiest business districts in the area, with plans for new resorts including a luxurious compound with a lake, beach and club facilities., Businesses and condo developments along the road already underway.

5: The trending all-inclusive developments A trend all over Thailand, developments which include everything a small society needs to function are growing in popularity, such as a micro-town, complete with a doctor’s office, a mini-mart, recreation centre, restaurants and more. It is generally considered to be an attractive opportunity for local expats and international investors alike who don’t have the time or ability to maintain the property themselves.

6: Still fairly untouched by tourism Hua Hin is often referred to as laid-back , peacefull, affordable and prestine.

7: Aristocratic roots and guaranteed protection The King of Thailand presently lives in Hua Hin. Because of this, it gets extra attention when it comes to maintaining public areas and services.

8: Family oriented Perhaps another benefit of being home to Royalty: it’s a place where wholesome families can settle down in peace, have fun-filled days at the beach and other family friendly attractions, with nearby water parks and shopping malls.

9: A reputation as the Ultimate Golfer’s Destination With a dozen courses around the region, Hua Hin is a golfing paradise. Villas and condos located on or nearby the most popular courses are sure to remain in high demand for years to come.

10: Lucrative Purchase/Rental Investment Opportunities For many of the same reasons that make Hua Hin’s a great place to invest, and high in demand for rentals. A “Rental Guarantee” option (with up to 30% discount on selected new purchases), allows the development to rent out the property for 46 weeks of the year during the first five years of ownership; a great opportunity to buy at an extremely competitive rate, especially for those looking forward to retirement in Thailand.

A self-made man, German born Martin Rosse, from Forsbach in Nordrhein-Westfalen has worked his way up from a mechanical apprentice to a Real Estate owner and agent in Thailand. When Martin arrived in Thailand about a decade ago, he wasn ́t ready to retire and looked for an existence in the land of smiles.

Learning it the hard way, with weeks of only soup and water, he slowly emerged from the valley of semi-existence to the firm place in society he has now earned through hard work and services offered. Starting off with rentals in Bangkok, online, he soon found out that this kind of existence was not very rewarding in terms of finance and sweat.

Having learned the trade of “Selbst ist der Mann” –(Handy Mann), Martin wanted to make that next move desperately. Why not do some housing project, step by step. As he build his forst house for sale, he made sure the quality was just more than the usual thin walled bricks you will find in most of the houses. As quality stands and gossip travels fast, his reputation as a builder became his trademark.

“Be there for your customers when they need you”His next move was to Hua Hin where he soon became an institution among foreign home seekers. Not abandoning rentals in general, Martin and his team established themselves as reliable, unlimited service rendering and trusted agents.

When he established HH-Immobilien Co. Ltd., the motto of his company remained “Personal Touch” and he made it his purpose to give sound and correct information about Projects, House Ownership, Land Ownership and After sales Service. Their comprehensive assistance starts at guiding the potential customer from their home country to Thailand where airport pick up, hotel reservation and personal service give a first impression of reliability and trust. In short: “Be there for your customers when they need you”, not only through the rental or purchasing period, but afterwards as well.

The Rosse – HH Immobilien story is a success story based on personality and a detail oriented manager.

A chef who has worked as advisor to the Italian embassies in several different countries, and with the British embassies in Italy, India and America has been recruited by no other than Peter Kirketerp of Mondo Vino to enrich the La Grappa Restaurant in Hua Hin.

Eraldo has owned and worked at top restaurants in various locations around the world including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, New Jersey, Italy and India, and he brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in several different styles of haute cuisine.

Before coming to Hua Hin and it being a first time in Thailand as well, Eraldo worked at the Imperial Hotel in New Dehli, at which Khun Peter Kerketirp was a guest 14 years ago when he was iuntroduced to Eraldo, which was preceded with an adventurous professional journey through more than 18 countries including Russia (St. Petersburg) and Siberia where he met his wife.

One of his postings included Princess Cruises where he worked alongside the legendary Chef Tony Grande, owner of Ill Capriccio, one of the top restaurants in the USA and bearer of the Cordon Blue. Eraldo was the first Chef at the opening of one of Munich’s top restaurant Tantris of which the editor happened to be a guest that day as well. What a small world.

At La Grappa, Eraldo will make some important changes and contributions to an already excellent menue. A number of culinary choices will be based on Grappa, the Italian national digestivo. The favourite wines of Eraldo are: Di Gavi wines – Cortese di Gavi or simply Gavi, is an Italian dry white wine produced in a restricted area of the Province of Alessandria, Piedmont, close to the Ligurian border, sometimes also called the king of white wines.

His favourite dish is Indian Dal a dried lentil, pea or various types of beans. It is a thick stew prepared from these pulses, an important part of Indian, Nepali, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, West Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine. It is regularly eaten with rice in southern India, and with both rice and roti (wheat-based flat bread) throughout northern India and Pakistan as well as Bangladesh, East India, and Nepal.

The History of the Oktoberfest

Crown Prince Ludwig of Germany, later to become King Ludwig I, was married to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on 12th October 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event. The fields have been named Theresienwiese (Theresas fields) in honor of the Crown Princess ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the «Wiesn».

Novemberfest in Thailand With a number of selected restaurants, the great tradition of the Octoberfest will be proudly celebrated in November 6th to 9th. places, where original Paulaner Festbier, a special brewed beer, which is only available during September and October, will be served for this occasion in Thailand. See the adverts for details of all joining restaurants.

We, All in Hua Hin, wish all customers and all participating restaurants a good time, lots of fun and Hua Hin, Prachuab Khirikhan and Chumporn. are the PROST !

Horse races in the presence of the Royal Family marked the close of the event that was celebrated as a festival for the whole of Bavaria. The decision to repeat the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest.

In 1811 an added feature to the horse races was the first Agricultural Show, designed to boost Bavarian agriculture. The horse races, which were the oldest and - at one time - the most popular event of the festival are no longer held today. But the Agricultural Show is still held every three years during the Oktoberfest on the southern part of the festival grounds. In the first few decades the choice of amusements was sparse. The first carousel and two swings were set up in 1818. Visitors were able to quench their thirst at small beer stands which grew rapidly in number. In 1896 the beer stands were replaced by the first beer tents and halls set up by enterprising landlords with the backing of the breweries.

The remainder of the festival site was taken up by a fun-fair. The range of carousels etc. on offer was already increasing rapidly in the 1870s as the fairground trade continued to grow and develop in Germany.

Today, the Oktoberfest is the largest festival in the world, with an international flavor characteristic of the 21th century: some 6 million visitors from all around the world converge on the Oktoberfest each year.

Alzheimer’s & Dementia Prevention

For many years, we’ve been told that there’s little we can do to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia but hope for the best and wait for a

pharmaceutical cure. But the truth is you can reduce your risk by eating right, exercising, staying mentally and socially active, and keeping stress in check. By leading a brain-healthy lifestyle, you may be able to prevent Alzheimer’s symptoms and slow down, or even reverse, the process of deterioration.

Lifestyle choices can protect your brain

The six pillars of a brain-healthy lifestyle are:

Regular exercise Healthy diet Mental stimulation Quality sleep Stress management An active social life

In addition to protecting against Alzheimer’s and dementia, regular exercise.

According to the Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation, physical exercise reduces your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by 50 percent.

Regular exercise can also slow further deterioration in those who have already started to develop cognitive problems.

Avoid trans fats and saturated fats. Reduce your consumption by avoiding full-fat dairy

products, red meat, fast food, fried foods, and packaged and processed foods.

A Healthy diet

Focus on eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats. Consuming foods such as ginger, green tea, fatty fish, soy products, blueberries, and other dark berries may protect these important cells from damage

Enjoy daily cups of tea. Regular consumption of green tea may enhance memory and mental alertness and slow brain aging. White and oolong teas are also particularly brain healthy. Drinking 2-4 cups daily has proven benefits. Although not as powerful as tea, coffee also confers brain benefits.

What about supplements?

Folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D, magnesium and fish oil are believed to preserve and improve brain health. Studies of vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, coenzyme Q10, and turmeric have yielded less conclusive results, but may also be beneficial in the prevention or delay of Alzheimer’s and dementia symptoms.

Stress that is chronic or severe takes a heavy toll on the brain, leading to shrinkage in a key memory area of

the brain known as the hippocampus, hampering nerve cell growth...

Mental stimulation

Your brain needs regular, restful sleep in order to function at optimum capacity. If nightly sleep deprivation is slowing your thinking and affecting your mood, you may be at greater risk of developing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The vast majority of adults need at least 8 hours of sleep per night. Any less, and productivity and creativity suffers.

Establish a regular sleep schedule. Going to bed and getting up at the same time reinforces your natural circadian rhythms. Your brain’s clock responds to regularity.

Set the mood. Reserve your bed for sleep and sex, and ban television and computers from the bedroom (both are stimulating and may lead to difficulties falling asleep).

Stress management

Stress that is chronic or severe takes a heavy toll on the brain, leading to shrinkage in a key memory area of the brain known as the hippocampus, hampering nerve cell growth, and increasing your risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Yet simple daily tools can minimize its harmful effects.

Get your stress levels in check with these proven techniques

Breathe! Stress alters your breathing rate and impacts oxygen levels in the brain. Quiet your stress response with deep, abdominal breathing. Restorative breathing is powerful, simple, and free!

Schedule daily relaxation activities. Keeping stress under control requires regular effort. Make relaxation a priority, whether it’s a walk in the park, playtime with your dog, yoga, or a soothing bath.

Nourish inner peace. Most scientists acknowledge a strong mind-body connection, and various studies associate spirituality with better brain health. Regular meditation, prayer, reflection, and religious practice may immunize you against the damaging effects of stress.

An active social life

Human beings are highly social creatures. We don’t thrive in isolation, and neither do our brains. Studies show that the more connected we are, the better we fare on tests of memory and cognition. Staying socially active may even protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, so make your social life a priority.

Simple ways to connect with your partner, family member, or friend

Commit to spending quality time together on a regular basis. Even during very busy and stressful times, a few minutes of really sharing and connecting can help keep bonds strong.

Find something that you enjoy doing together, whether it is a shared hobby, dance class, daily walk, or sitting over a cup of coffee in the morning.

Try something new together. Doing new things together can be a fun way to connect and keep things interesting. It can be as simple as trying a new restaurant or going on a day trip to a place you’ve never been before.

Tiger Woods

Four years without a major ultimately added up to the end for the controversial Tiger Woods-Sean Foley partnership with the former world No 1 announcing on Monday that he had split with the coach. “I’d like to thank Sean for his help as my coach and for his friendship,” Woods said. “Sean is one of the outstanding coaches in golf today, and I know he will continue to be successful. With my next tournament not until my World Challenge event at Isleworth in Orlando, this is the right time to end our professional relationship.”

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy says his break-up with fiancée Caroline Wozniacki is behind the sensational form that has seen him claim the US PGA Championship halfway lead in pursuit of a second major title in four weeks. “I’ve put a little bit more time into my golf and refocused in a way. It’s the only thing I have, I’ve got my family and my friends, but I just immersed myself in my game. I’ve practised hard and I’ve done all the right things and I›m reaping the rewards. Golf is the number one priority to me and while I’m on this run of form I want to try and keep it going as long as possible.”

Nicklaus Award Nominees Revealed

Billy Horschel, Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy, Jimmy Walker and Bubba Watson have been nominated for the Jack Nicklaus Award, annually given to the PGA Tour’s player of the year. With two majors victories and three wins overall on the U.S.-based circuit, McIlroy is the overwhelming favorite to take home the honor now that the 2013-14 season wrapped up at the Tour Championship on Sunday. Horschel won the

FedEx Cup playoffs on Sunday while Kaymer (U.S. Open) and Watson (the Masters) brought home the other two majors that McIlroy didnt win. Balloting for the award, which is done solely by PGA Tour members who played in at least 15 events last season, will close at 5 p.m. ET on Sept. 25. The winner will be announced the week of Sept. 28. The PGA Tour also announced that Victor Dubuisson, Chesson Hadley and Brooks Koepka are on the ballot for rookie of the year honors.

Ladies Golf

Golf isn’t for everyone. We know that and in many ways we can understand that. Women tournaments are as exciting and interesting as any of the men Golf series.

Hyo Joo Kim shoots lowest major round ever – Evian Masters

Korean teenager Hyo Joo Kim became the first player to shoot 61 in either a men’s or ladies› major to take a four-shot lead in the first round of the Evian Masters. Kim’s 10-under-par round included five birdies on each half of the course and eclipsed the previous record low score of 62, shot twice in ladies’ majors by Minea Blomqvist in 2004 at Sunningdale and Lorena Ochoa at Mission Hills in 2006. Women ́s Golf is on the rise and youngsters are shooting better than some of the men veterans.

APPROACH will follow women’s golf closely in the upcoming issues with the latest news.

SchoolHHIS LAUNCH EVENT AT THE

INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL

A group of over 100 attended our launch event at the Intercontinental Hotel in Hua Hin this September.

Hua Hin International School is an independent, privately owned, co-educational school that will initially cater for children from age 2+ to 11 and will draw children from multicultural backgrounds. The campus has a Master Plan that is designed for close to 1000 children aged 2-18 and this will be developed along with the growth of students.

Situated approximately 15 minutes from the centre of Hua Hin, the school will sit in an area that is truly beautiful – green, full of fresh country air and visually stimulating close to the Black Mountain Golf Club and Black Mountain Water Park.

The school will open in August 2015 and we expect our students and many of our staff to live in or near the growing expat and Thai

communities of Hua Hin town (soon to be a City); the children will mix socially after school and most will become involved in the diverse after school activities available at school.

The climate will allow us to take full advantage of the outdoor environment and the garden and sports fields will be a fundamental part of our programme with easy outside access from each classroom. Teachers will make full use of this resource in their daily planning in a variety of ways. The setting and classrooms, both indoors and out, have been designed attractively into learning areas, the organisation of these spaces will change and evolve over time, influenced by the children and their interests, the creativity of the staff and topics or projects in which they may be involved. The rooms will be light and spacious with ample resources to support exploration and learning. All classrooms will be equipped with Interactive White Boards and a range of additional educational technology. We will make full use of our specialist areas, which include a library, computer lab, music room, art room, Thai room and swimming pool.

There will be a strong community feel throughout the school, parents will be valued as partners in their children’s learning and parent involvement will be encouraged in a variety of ways – including the setting up of a Parent Teachers’ Group (PTG).

Editor´s Note: The school fees were mentioned at THB 450,000 a year for the primary school und THB 650,000 for later planned secondary.

By Shawn K. Carpenter

When you’re feeling uncertain in life, you feel afraid.

This fear can take many forms: • Fear of rejection, • Fear of failure, • Fear of not being good enough, • Fear of not being loved... So what do you do with that fear?

Think of a someone you admire. They know where they’re going - regardless of what is happening around them. But where does this certainty come from and can you experience it?

Try this exercise: • Start moving at a very slow pace, • Slump your shoulders, • Speak slowly, with no enthusiasm, • Use words like ‹try› and ‹maybe› when thinking of goals... • What happens? How do you feel? How does that affect your state?

Our state is directly determined by what we tell ourselves habitually, what we focus on and what we do with our body. This, in turn, affects the actions we take and the quality of thoseactions which create our results.

Strategies to Get What You Want

1. Repeat positive incantations such as «I love my life.» Repeat this several timesover and with enough emotional intensity that you believe it.

2. Get physical! Go for a walk or a run, do some yoga or anything else that will workfor you.

3. Time travel; it’s real - at least to your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind can›t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined. It must express whatever isimprinted upon it through the body.

A simple, albeit crude, example is when you have a sexual fantasy. What happens? You get aroused. The subconscious mind believed the fantasy to be real, and expressed it through your body accordingly.

To intentionally imprint what you really desire upon your subconscious mind, take five minutes before you go to sleep at night and just as you wake in the morning to pretend that you already have whatever you desire as if it were real now. Use all your senses - everything you see, hear, feel, taste and touch. You’ll be programming your subconscious mind to alter your state, come up with solutions, and notice cues in your environment to create what you want. Perform these tasks daily - as your new ritual - and you’ll become certain in the face of uncertainty.

“First I think we should put these books in some sort of order,” I told Sal as I climbed off his hand onto the bookshelf and sat down with my legs dangling over

the ledge. Unlike the rest of Sal’s giant-proportioned house, the furniture in his library was made to accommodate human objects, and I felt more comfortable there than in Sal’s kitchen. “But they’re already organised by colour,” Sal replied so I took a closer look at the books to see what Sal meant: Black, Brown, Green, Blue, Purple, and Red. I thought carefully about how I could change his mind without hurting his feelings before speaking – it would’ve been a shame to get squashed on the first day of my new job for not being nice. “You’re right,” I said. “It’s brilliant, better than any um, professional libraries I’ve seen. They don’t organise their books like this,”“They don’t?” Sal inquired, he was licking his lower lip again. “Most librarians have a system to keep track of all their books, but we don’t have to do it like that,”“How do they do it?” “Alphabetical order within categorised sections, but seeing as you’ve already got a great system…” I let my voice trail off. Part of me felt guilty for messing with Sal like that but I knew I’d never be able to find my way around this library if I couldn’t organise it the way I wanted. “Well, we could try it out,” Sal said at last. “I would like my library to be, um, professional.”

Although it took all day we did sort through about a quarter of the books he owned, had rescued, found, permanently borrowed, taken, and stolen. I re-organised the books while Sal cleared the shelves and put each book back in their newly assigned places. I was amazed by the amount and variety of books Sal had managed to collect, and decided to put his Non-Fiction (histories, how-to books, biographies) on one side of the room, Fiction (fairy tales, novels and sagas) on the opposite side of the room, and the stories that may or may not be true in the middle of the room. When the sun began to set, Sal went hunting for dinner and left me with a clay bowl half-filled with warm water to bathe in.

I hadn’t had a proper bath for weeks, and the warm water was as soothing as it was cleansing. After washing, I went into Reckwood’s library (we hadn’t even started to sort through the books in there) to get a clean change of clothes from the handful of possessions I’d brought with me from the city that had once been my home. I put on my best dress – a red dress, with white sash, buttons and seams that Mama had been allowed to keep when her charge, Lord Beacon’s daughter, had grown out of it. Mama was the nanny in Lord Beacon’s house and half the items in our home had been the Beacon’s castoffs. The dress was close to being too small for me but I didn’t think Sal would notice, just like I didn’t think he would care that I had chosen not to put stockings on seeing as the weather didn’t require them (Madame Cole, on the other hand, would have had a fit). I twirled around and watched the skirt fan out below my hips. I felt pretty. I – fuzzy-haired, biggish ears, Amelia – felt pretty. The last time I had felt this way had been the day Mama gave it to me. It was my tenth birthday and I had put it on immediately. When the neighbours played their fiddle, Papa danced me around the living room. I pretended it was a ball room and that I wore silk gloves and dancing slippers. I had not cared that the music was dulled by the walls and played by a rusty musician. I looked back down at the dress. How could I have known more than a year ago when we were dancing, that fever would sweep through our village and leave with my parent’s lives’? I reached for the buttons to take off the dress, but Sal walked in before I could undo the first one. He put some meat on the bench and focused his eyes on me. “You’re beautiful Amelia.” He said softly. I smiled, almost as broadly as I had the first time I had worn the dress. (Sal had said ‘truly beautiful’! That was a large leap from calling me ‘quite pretty’.) My urge to change clothing faded. It wasn’t until I went to bed that I realised that I had been unable to stop swishing my skirts all evening. In my imagination, Mama and Daddy’s happy, smiling lips kissed my forehead good-night.
