If you are looking to kick start your career by gaining a nationally recognised qualification, yet learn better on the job than in a classroom, then an apprenticeship pathway may be the route for you.

Apprenticeships teach you a trade through learning in the workplace, backed up with theoretical knowledge that may be delivered at College. Not only will you get on the job training, you will also earn money from day one.

Plus, did you know that over the course of your career you can earn on average £100,000 more than those who don’t do an apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships are nationally recognised as a fantastic pathway into the career of your choice and accross now offers apprenticeships in almost all industries.

What qualifications will you gain?Apart from the chance to learn a trade, gain real-life work experience and earn money, through an apprenticeship you will gain a range of qualifications. These are:

National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) To gain your NVQ, an assessor will regularly visit your workplace and you will be assessed on work-based tasks.

Technical CertificateA technical qualification such as a BTEC or City & Guilds (relevant to the specific apprenticeship).

Functional Skills/Key SkillsYour apprenticeship will also help to develop your functional skills (maths and english and in some cases IT). You will be taught functional skills at College and you will be encouraged to develop these further in the workplace. Your functional skills monitoring will be through a combination of observations, portfolio based evidence and assessment.

‘Not only will you get on the job training, you will also earn money from day one.’

Welcome to the accross apprenticeships guide.

I’m not sure which apprenticeship I should do. How can I decide?By asking us…we have trained advisors who can help you find the perfect match for your skills, experience and lifestyle.

Will this cost me anything? No. You will not have to pay any money towards the cost of your apprenticeship.

Depending on your age and the scheme you choose, your employer may have to make a financial contribution. The Skills Funding Agency pay the full cost of your training if you are aged 16 - 18. Your employer may be expected to contribute to your training cost if you are older.

How much money will I earn? You will be paid the National Minimum wage rates for an Apprentice.

How long will it take? This will be discussed at the beginning of your programme with your Training Support Officer (TSO) who will build you an individual learning plan. Apprenticeships generally take between 12 - 23 months.

What hours will I work? Most apprenticeships are based on full-time, working hours, and may be a mixture of time in the workplace and time at College. More time is spent in the workplace than at College (for example four days a week at work and one day at College).

How will I be monitored as an apprentice? We will allocate you your own Training Support Officer (TSO) who will come out to your place of work to offer you support, monitor your progress and ensure that you are in a safe and secure environment. They will also meet with you when you are in College and will feedback progress reports

to your employer.

Where can an apprenticeship lead? There are a number of routes that you can take after an apprenticeship. You can use the skills that you have developed to carry on in employment.

You can also use the apprenticeship scheme to go on to an Advanced Apprenticeship. This is your Level 3 qualification and can take you into higher education. Apprenticeships are constantly evolving and as such many now count towards your university application.

What is involved in an apprenticeship? Practical: You will be assessed on your practical ability to do your job. These will take place in the College and in your place of work.

Theory: Depending on your course you will complete assignments and tests, based on the modules you take. You will receive regular updates on your progress.

Functional skills: You will complete functional skills evidence and where possible this will be related to your course of study.

Evidence: During your course you will compile a file of evidence which chronicles your experiences and proves you have completed various activities.

Dress codes: Each apprenticeship area has its own dress code. You will be given details of the clothes that you will be expected to wear.

You want to know…
