In each of the sentences above , the italicized part restates the noun it follows . Sometimes, it is just another name for the noun. Usually, however, it explains or gives additional information about the noun, making it more definite in our minds.

In the first sentences, for example, “ a boy who lived with fairies” is the same as Peter Pan. In the second, “ a place where children never grow up” is the same as Never Never Land.

Exercise 1 (Guided Practice) You probably have noticed the commas that separate the appositives from the rest of

the sentence. Practice using commas for appositives in the sentences below. Can you find them? If an appositives comes in the middle of the sentence, be sure to put a comma before and after it.
