APPLYING THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

The following presentation will walk you through the all of the steps involved in the systematic way of problem solving used by scientists known as the scientific method.

The basic steps of the scientific method were applied to “The Chewing Gum Lab.”

TITLE:THE CHEWING GUM

LAB

Research “Gum chewing dates back to ancient civilizations. Ancient Greeks chewed mastic tree resin, and American Indians chewed gum made from spruce tree resin. This gum was eventually replaced by paraffin wax gum. Today’s chewing gums are made mostly of synthetic materials.”

Launched in 1984, Extra was Wrigley's first sugar free gum offering in the U.S. Extra gum is known for its incredible, long-lasting flavors. Extra is also available in a variety of distinctive gum flavors.

5 is a brand of sugar-free chewing gum that is manufactured by the Wrigley Company. The name "5" hints at the five human senses (with the ad slogan "Stimulate Your Senses" and "Everybody Experiences it Differently"). 5 gum was introduced to United States markets in March 2007.

HYPOTHESIS:• Based on your

observations, make a guess which flavor will last the longest.

• Good Hypothesis:

“If _____[this happens] _____, then _____[this]_____ will happen.”

Good Hypothesis:

“If both brands of gum are chewed for 5 minutes, then Brand ____ flavor will last the longest.”

MATERIALS:• 5 Gum• Extra Gum• Wax Paper• Timer/Clock• Related lab/data

worksheets• Pencil• Notebook

PROCEDURE:

Experiment: Each group will have a 1)Time keeper

2)Recorder 3)Gum chewer

4)Presenter

The Time keeper will start the timer the same time the Gum chewer puts Brand A in their mouth.

The Time keeper will tell you when each minute passes so the Gum chewer can tell the recorder how the gum is rating.

The Recorder will use the hand out and rate the flavor using the “Flavor Rating Scale.”

Repeat the experiment with Brand B. Then compare the data.
