REALearning Experience

What are some words that come to

mind when you think of a meaningful

learning experience you’ve had?

Deconstructing REAL Projects

What does it mean to design a

REAL Project?

Rigorous

Engaging

Authentic

Learning

Rigorous-students demonstrate

depth of knowledge

Rigorous - rigorous in design

● they are tuned by other teachers and refined

● they are tried out by the teacher first

● students are assessed for: ○ their content learning

○ the quality of the process

○ their skills development as well as the final product

Engaging

Engaging

• Insisting that what students do in school has

purpose, and will be exhibited to an

audience

• Subject content is relevant, connected, and

useful to the task in hand

• The essential question and the product drive

student learning

• Enables the use of technologies, locations,

expertise and practical methods to achieve

deep learning

Authentic

Authentic

• Projects, driving questions, and products

must have validity in the real world, not just

‘for the sake of it’ in school

• Students take on the role of a professional in

the real world

Learning-Students are making links

between content and skills

Learning

● Learning through REAL Projects, not

Teaching through REAL Projects.

● Learning is driven primarily by the essential

question and the creation of a product,

● REAL Projects are not about teachers

making links between areas of teaching, but

about students being allowed to make links

between areas of learning.

What is the difference between

doing a project and REAL Projects?

A project is done at the end of

a unit. It requires little to no

knowledge from the

unit to complete the project.

Ex: Students study a

civilization and make an

artifact from that civilization at

the end.

In PBL, the project is

introduced on the first day of

a unit. All of the learning

within the unit is essential to

complete the final project.

Ex: students create their own

civilization after studying the

key elements of a civilization

and looking at examples

through history
