Precision Sensing, Measurement, and Controls

A-Tech Corporation, d.b.a. Applied Technology Associates (ATA), is a privately held small business located in the Sandia Science and Technology Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

ATA is a precision measurement, sensing and controls company providing services and products to government and commercial customers. ATA has demonstrated a remarkable ability to transition technology to operational use and commercial products by leveraging internal and government-funded research and development.

ATA manufactures angular rate sensors, actuators, and subsystems used in crash testing, aerospace controls, platform stabilization, vibration and motion measurement, inertial navigation, and line-of-sight imaging systems. ATA products and services span ground, air, and space applications. Small, light-weight, fast steering mirrors are ATA's latest product line and can achieve sub-micro radian pointing stability.

The company was founded in 1975 and in 2009 employed 250.

ATA has developed a complete line of fast steering mirrors, bringing new meaning to the word “fast,” that enable real time corrections in adaptive optics for directed energy systems, long range dynamic laser communications, and telescopes. Our FSMs can be space-qualified. We offer designs using any mirror technology from metal and glass to silicon carbide to meet your specific program requirements. Mirror sizes range from 1-inch high performance laser communications mirrors to proven 5-inch 1 kHz designs to new 12-inch custom designs operating at 1 kHz and higher for high energy laser directed energy systems.

Optical IRUs are crucial to modern acquisition, tracking and pointing (ATP) systems, and ATA has over 35 years experience solving challenging ATP problems through hardware and controls innovations. ATA’s unique combination of practical experience and patented component technologies are at the core of the best performing family of optical IRUs in the world today. The Magne to -Hyd ry rodynamic (MHD) IRU-Lase r Communication (MIRU-LC) is ATA’s latest IRU and stands as our flagship IRU, incorporating the benefits of and replacing the MIRU II, MIRU III, and Advanced IRU (aIRU). MIRU-LC also includes several advancements and features not included in previous models such as a space qualifiable design and 3-axis sensing.

DoD space surveillance and weapons systems require highly accurate inertial knowledge in absolute position and orientation. ATA is addressing this need by developing a Hybrid IMU to overcome the inherent drift associated with all inertial measurement units. The joint inclusion of a global positioning system (GPS) receiver to provide positional (and velocity) aiding along with an autonomous star tracker, which provides robust attitude aiding, makes available the necessary information required for the auto-correcting capability. ATA is addressing the need for an IMU tolerant of severe radiation environments that is reliable over long operating missions by developing a modular Radiation Hardened IMU (RHIMU).

ATA is the industry leader in the design of rugged, precision angular rate sensors. Used for everything from crash and ejection testing, to precision platform stabilization and line-of-sight imaging, our sensors are available in both commercial and space-qualified versions. Since 1984, our reputation has been built by providing our customers with the finest angular rate sensors available as well as providing applications and long-term customer support. ATA’s designs have proven superior on the ground, in the air, and in extended space flight. We combine our patented MHD technology with the finest machined components, rugged microelectronics, durable plastics, and encapsulating resins to make sensors that survive the harshest environments. Each sensor is dynamically tested and calibrated to exacting standards.
