The Arts and Crafts Movement

During the Arts and Crafts Movement they focused more on decorative arts than paintings. Some examples are textiles, furniture and stained glass. William Morris actually started the Arts and Crafts movement. While on my tour in Wal-Marts I came upon this Cabinet which could be a piece of furniture that could have been hand made with quality an a artist with true passion.

Poster Art Alphonse Mucha was one of my favorite

poster designers. His first poster was of Sarah Bernhardt, which used subtle use of color which gave him overnight success. He made many posters for theatre announcements and for cigarette advertisements. He was one of the great Art Nouveau poster artists. While at Wal-Marts I saw this poster of music which is a great advertisement. I love music and it has a lot of great wording on it to show the feeling of music.

Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau actually means new art in French. The main goal was to raise the level of fine art. One of my favorite designers was Rene Lalique. He used semi-precious stones such as ivory, and onyx to name a few. When in the jewelry department of Wal-Marts I came upon this beautiful bracelet made of turquoise. It reminded me of a piece of jewelry Lalique may have designed.

Art Nouveau Architecture Art Nouveau was thought of decorative

arts and had a large impact on architecture. Art Nouveau embraced the use of iron and glass. The Park Guell was a park in Barcelona in era of 1900-1914. It had benches decorated with decorated mosaics. While at Wal-Marts I found this hand crafted plate that had mosaic tiles around the boarder of the plate. This reminded me of the Art Nouveau time period.

Modern Architecture

Was developed from two sources the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movement. The engineer and the architect were considered the new artist of this age. The engineers used iron, steel and concrete. Many bridges were developed as well as skyscrapers during 1800’s era. Gustav Eiffel was a bridge builder and he also created the Eiffel Tower. I found this beautiful black and white picture that showed may skyscrapers and reminded of this time frame.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasgow School

Mackintosh had long flowing designs and geometric shapes. He was a great influence on the Viennese Secession. He and his wife made up part of the Glasgow Four. Mackintosh won the commission for the Glasgow School of Art at age 28 with influence of Celtic art, wrought iron with minimum ornament. Mackintosh work is an abstract art. When at Wal-Mart I saw this beautiful pillow with geometric designs which exhibited Charles Mackintosh’s design.

The Vienna Secession The Vienna Secession was founded in 1897 and

had no unifying style, artists could implement their own styles and put them on exhibition. The picture captured below was during my treasure hunt of various items while exploring Wal-Mart. When I saw the gold bracelet I noticed the golden leaves etched into the bracelet, this reminded me of the golden ball of the Secession with the laurel leaves on it. Also, many paintings where covered in gold leaf. This gold bracelet reminded me of these Vienna Secession qualities.

The Weiner Werkstatte The Weiner Werkstatte was founded in 1903.

This phrase literally means the Vienna Workshop. Werkstatte was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. This design house produced many items such as flatware as represented in the picture below. This picture was captured while exploring Wal-Marts. As you look at the handles of the silverware you notice that they have a square design at the end of the handle and this was one of Weiner Werkstatte’s design qualities. I love the design.

Frank Lloyd Wright Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the

greatest modern American architects. His style consisted of horizontal lines which implemented domesticity. Wright believed in creating a total environment from building a house to furniture that went in it. When at Wal-Marts I saw this TV stand, which showed the horizontal clean cut lines with a rectangular shape that Wright used in his designs. I felt this piece exhibited those qualities.

The Bauhaus The Bauhaus meaning “building house” was

established during 1919 to 1933 around the World War I period. The Bauhaus wanted to fulfill the Arts and Crafts movement. The artists had different types of craftsmanship. They produced many household items which were metalwork, furniture as well as textiles. When at Wal-Mart, I saw this clock made of metal designs around the clock which reminded me of the metalwork that an artist could have created at the Bauhaus. I thought this was a creative piece of art.
