InterviewingApplicants’ Benefits
Thomas Zadro
As a Recruiter I constantly work on making the application process easier, fairer and
more transparent for all involved. Simply because I would like to have the best
candidate hired, simply because I want you being hired!
Remote Interviewing in this presentation is used as term for having employers’ questions and applicants’ answers de-synchronized in terms of time and used medium.
By reviewing the classical and the remote approach from side of all involved, I aim to create transparency for applicants on the process.
Remote Interviewing
What this is about
Application Process
Classical
First of all, you apply by sending your Curriculum
Vitea (CV) and cover letter, explaining why you are
taking interest in the opening.
Then it is all about waiting....
Out of sudden you get an invitation for a phone
interview or are simply called...
If you are lucky, the proposed time fits or the call
reaches you under pleasant circumstances.
From the candidate’s side,
the first steps in the
application process might
look more or less as on
the left hand side.
Looks like a lot of waiting
mixed with an element of
coincidence.
Ever wondered why?
A job application efforts a certain investment of time: To find out about the posted
position, the company which states the request and your fit to the profile demands.
First of all, you apply by sending your Curriculum Vitea (CV) and cover letter, explaining why you are taking interest in the opening.
Then it is all about waiting....
Out of sudden you get an invitation for a phone interview or you are simply called without any notice at all...
If you are lucky, the proposed time fits or the call reaches you under pleasant circumstances.

The recruiter’s side
Request is opened and made public
Applications are received....
Profiles are checked against basic requirements
Applications are reviewed in details and a short list of top candidates to be considered forphone interviews is created.
Recruiters are asked tohave a position filled:• in a short time,• cost efficient• with the best fitting
person
A classical phone screentakes about 45min to60min time incl.documentation and followup.
A reasonable initial “shortlist” might contain 10 to15 persons. This meansup to two days workingtime for a recruiter.
I RISK TO LOSE YOU because it might take longer for me to come back to you.In the meanwhile you might have already accepted the second best alternativeand are off the market.
Application Process
Remote Interview
Let’s summarize it. The classical process...
...isn’t flexible as it needs two people being available at the same time.
...is time consuming as planning is afforded.
...isn’t objective as it contains an unavoidable element of random.
But what if...
...you could perform the interview whenever it is most suitable for you?
...you would have time to prepare yourself?
...you would encounter exactly the same circumstances and questions as every
other applicant for this position?
Well, I asked me the same questions and I might have an answer in place:
You, as a fitting candidate, will drive the process!
Application Process
Remote Interview
Your application comes in and will be reviewed
against the basic requirements linked to the open
position.
Congrats, your profile suits to the basic
requirements. You are invited to perform a remote
interview.
Two days later you will get your feedback; ideally
by being invited for a personal interview!
You plan time and local. You set the environment and
can do the interview in the for you best suiting way,
showing your great qualities
You apply for the posted
position and will get a
feedback within a maximum
time of 14days.
If you are considered to be
fitting to the posted basic
requirements, you will get
invited for a short video
interview, to be completed
within a reasonable time of 7
days.
This means:
...you perform the interview whenever it is suitable for you!
...you have time to prepare yourself!
...you encounter exactly the same circumstances and questions as every other
applicant for this position!
Concerns?
Where is the rub?
Technical Issues:
• It isn’t fun to record a video with a poor or instable internetconnection.
• Having an outdated web-cam or a not well operating micro also canbe an issue.
Well being:
• You might miss the “verbal receipt” of your counterpart. Noencouraging “hmmm” or nodding.
• It feels strange to talk into a black hole instead of chatting with aperson
Yes, there are rubs, caused by the use of thistechnique. And these as well as other obstacles needto be taken serious, as it is to attract talent and notto exclude it.
