Computer Application Areas in Textile industry | What is
CAD/CAM? | Application of CAD/CAM in Textile Industry
Textile Industrial Application of Computers:
Use of computer at various management levels in Indust ry.
Use o f spread sheets to calculate, Present and Analyze engineering data.
Use of dif f erent Stat istical methods to analyze engineering data.
Use of Minitab (TM) sof tware .
Use of dif f erent mathematical techniques t o so lve engineering problems.
Use of Mat Lab (TM) sof tware.
The overall course objective is to provide the student with the background to understand and work
withcomputer systems f or data acquisition, analysis, display and cont rol of Textile processes.
What is CAD/CAM?
CAD is the cont raction which stands f orComputerAided Design and CAM is the Computer Aided
Manufacturing. This term means dif f erent things to dif f erent people involved in designing, manufacturing
and mechanical engineering.CAD or Computer Aided Design has brought a revolut ion in the Textile indust ry.
The time consuming and cumberso me process of text ile designing has been made easier by CAD. Now
thoughtf ull and innovative designs are available to the textile designers and textile manufacturers at the
click of a mouse.
Application of CAD/CAM in Textile Industry
The textile designs are the original works o f the designers. CAD helps them to visualize and see their
imaginative design in f inal form without producing any sample swatch. Sometimes, T he custo mers t oo
provide ideas f or designing according to their particular requirement. These are in the f orm of painted
artwork o r f abric samples and sometimes f ilm negatives. The textile designers, with the help of CAD,
convert them into workable designs. For this t o be done, the sample is scanned with the help of either
scanners or digital cameras and then they are edited to o btain the f inal design.
Computer systems used to design and manufacture products . The term CAD/CAM implies that an engineer
canuse the system both f or designing a product and fo r contro lling manufacturing processes CAD is broad
term used to represent use of computer in designing. CAM is term that denotes the computerized cont rolof manufacturing process. Almos t all industry sectors are using CAD in their designing departments. CAD
can help to draw textile designs fo rtextile industry.
We should not conf use CAD only with drawings. CAD covers many aspects o f designing like design
calculations, dataanalysis and simulations. Commonly used so f tware used f or CAD are AUTO CAD,
MSVISIO, Smart Draw etc.
