EPCOS is a leading manufacturer of electronic components, modules and systems. Our broad portfolio includes capacitors, inductors and ferrites, EMC filters, sensorsand sensor systems, nonlinear resistors, and arresters, as well as SAW and BAWcomponents and RF modules. As an innovative technology-driven company, EPCOSfocuses technologically demanding growth markets in the areas of information andcommunications technology, automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics. Weoffer our customers both standard components as well as application-specificsolutions.

EPCOS has design, manufacturing and marketing facilities in Europe, Asia and the Americas. We are continuously strengthening our global research and development network by expanding R&D activities at our production locations, primarily in Eastern Europe, China and India. With our global presence we are able to provide our customers with local development and manufacturing know-how and support in the early phases of their projects.

EPCOS is continually improving its processes and thus the quality of its products and services. The Group is ISO/TS 16949 certified and remains committed to constantly reviewing and systematically improving its quality management system.

Welcome to the World of Electronic Components and Modules

Page 3: Application Guide - Medical Appliancesallstarmagnetics.com/assets/medicalapps.pdf · Application Guide 2009 Industrial Electronic Components for Medical Appliances

Medical technology is one of the most challenging markets for electronics. Thedemands placed on the precision, reliability and long-term stability of electronicsystems are very high. The same also applies to the electronic components as well. Based on its recognized high level of quality EPCOS is able to meet these requirements.

For example, the pressure sensors used in anesthesia apparatus are designed to be very reliable and extremely precise. Special skin probes for long-term body temperature monitoring – for example in incubators for neonates – can withstand atleast 100 sterilization cycles at 134 °C.

Power supplies for medical devices must also be extremely reliable. For such applications EPCOS manufactures aluminum electrolytic capacitors, for example, that can be operated at temperatures of up to 140 °C and offer high long-term stability and a long useful life. EPCOS has also developed large-volume ferrite coresespecially for the high-performance and high-voltage power supplies in X-ray, CT and MRI equipment.

Film capacitors designed by EPCOS also feature very high long-term stability for use in high-voltage power supplies, as well as in the PFC, snubbering or EMI filtering stages of medical devices.

On the following pages you will find further special features that distinguish our products and solutions for use in medical appliances.

Accredited EMC laboratory

The EPCOS EMC Laboratory in Regensburg offerscomprehensive, in-depth EMC services: from con-sulting and pre-compliance investigations on proto-types to conformity testing of series-productionequipment.

The excellently equipped laboratory, combined withmany years’ experience and EMC expertise, as wellas active participation in national and internationalstandardization bodies, provides a solid foundationfor meeting customers’ requirements. Investigationsperformed side by side with the development processdetermine the measures required to observe the EMClimits: these measures are documented in the

measurement report in a manner that is transparentfor the developers.

A test report provides proof of compliance with the relevant standards and is the basis for the customer’s declaration of conformity.

The EMC laboratory in Regensburg has been anaccredited test laboratory since October 1994.Accreditation in accordance with the guidelines of the German Accreditation Council (DAR) now meets the current EN ISO IEC 17025 quality standard for laboratories as the basis for the guaranteed indepen-dence, impartiality and integrity of its measurementand test results.

InstallationsThe EMC laboratory has a semi-anechoic chamber forfield-strength measurements in accordance with therelevant standards at a measurement distance of10 m between the antenna and the equipment undertest. Special facilities such as large entrances, exhaust gas extraction, power supplies up to 100 A as well as resistive and inductive (motor) loadseven permit the testing of bulky or high-poweredequipment.

Important Notes

The following applies to all products named in thispublication:

1. Some parts of this publication contain statementsabout the suitability of our products for certainareas of application. These statements are based onour knowledge of typical requirements that are oftenplaced on our products in the areas of application con-cerned. We nevertheless expressly point out that suchstatements cannot be regarded as binding state-ments about the suitability of our products for aparticular customer application. As a rule, EPCOS iseither unfamiliar with individual customer applicationsor less familiar with them than the customers them-selves. For these reasons, it is always ultimately in-cumbent on the customer to check and decidewhether an EPCOS product with the properties de-scribed in the product specification is suitable for usein a particular customer application.

2. We also point out that in individual cases, a mal-function of electronic components or failurebefore the end of their usual service life cannot becompletely ruled out in the current state of the art, even if they are operated as specified. Incustomer applications requiring a very high level ofoperational safety and especially in customer applica-tions in which the malfunction or failure of an electroniccomponent could endanger human life or health (e.g.in accident prevention or life-saving systems), it musttherefore be ensured by means of suitable design of the customer application or other action taken by thecustomer (e.g. installation of protective circuitry orredundancy) that no injury or damage is sustained bythird parties in the event of malfunction or failure of anelectronic component.

3. The warnings, cautions and product-specific notesmust be observed.

4. In order to satisfy certain technical requirements, someof the products described in this publication maycontain substances subject to restrictions in cer-tain jurisdictions (e.g. because they are classed as hazardous). Useful information on this will be found in our Material Data Sheets on the Internet(www.epcos.com/material). Should you have any moredetailed questions, please contact our sales offices.

5. We constantly strive to improve our products. Conse-quently, the products described in this publicationmay change from time to time. The same is true ofthe corresponding product specifications. Pleasecheck therefore to what extent product descriptionsand specifications contained in this publication are stillapplicable before or when you place an order.

We also reserve the right to discontinue productionand delivery of products. Consequently, we cannotguarantee that all products named in this publicationwill always be available.

The aforementioned does not apply in the case of individual agreements deviating from the foregoing forcustomer-specific products.

6. Unless otherwise agreed in individual contracts, allorders are subject to the current version of the“General Terms of Delivery for Products andServices in the Electrical Industry” published bythe German Electrical and Electronics IndustryAssociation (ZVEI).

7. The trade names EPCOS, BAOKE, Alu-X, CeraDiode, CSSP, CTVS, DSSP, MiniBlue, MKK, MLSC,MotorCap, PCC, PhaseCap, PhaseMod, SIFERRIT,SIFI, SIKOREL, SilverCap, SIMDAD, SIMID, SineFormer,SIOV, SIP5D, SIP5K, ThermoFuse, WindCap are trademarks registered or pending in Europe and in other countries.
