Organizational Description The Center for the Development of Recycling (CDR) is a non-profit organization providing recycling-related information to Santa Clara County residents, businesses, and local governments. CDR is contracted with Santa Clara County to operate its Recycling Hotline. The hotline is staffed 9:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Hotline information is also available at www.RecycleStuff.org. As part of San Jose State Universitys Department of Environmental Studies, CDR organizes students to staff the hotline and to research and develop its information resources. The partnership between the County and SJSU provides residents and businesses with a cost-efficient information service while students gain valuable public service experience and develop project management and information dissemination skills. The Appliance Recycle and Disposal Guide is designed to assist the residents of Santa Clara County in finding a reuse or recycling facility for a variety of appliances. This guide includes refrigerators, clothes washers and dryers, water heaters, stoves, microwave ovens, air conditioners, and freezers. Appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and freezers use a chemical coolant called Freon. Some recyclers require that Freon be removed before they will accept the appliance. The Freon must be removed by a certified technician to comply with local, state, and federal regulations. Each item properly serviced will receive a certificate of Freon removal. Upon receiving a copy of this certificate, a recycler will accept the appliance. Not all recyclers require that Freon must be removed prior to accepting the appliance. See the comments section of the guide for details for each company listed. Please call reuse facilities or recyclers in advance to find out specific details regarding their services before visiting. If you have any questions please call the Santa Clara County Recycling Hotline at (800) 533-8414 or (408) 924-5453 and our staff will research a solution at no cost or obligation. For Spanish and Vietnamese information, call (408) 924-5359 or email us at [email protected]. The services provided by companies listed in this guide are defined as follows: Code Source Definition C Curbside The citys recycler will pick-up the appliances at curbside.

D Drop-off Appliances can be dropped-off at the reuse or recycling facility. F Fee There is a fee for the indicated service.

P Pick-up Companies that reuse or recycle will pick-up appliances from residents or businesses.

W Working The appliance must be in usuable condition.
