History

One day in Western Australia of 1973, a

farmer named John Cripps was harvesting

his crop, when he discovered that he had a

new breed of apples. When he had it regis-

tered, he named it the “Cripps Pink” apple.

The appeal of this apple was high enough to

where the Cripps Pink apple became one of

the first apples to be sold under an actual

brand name, the “Pink Lady” apple. The

trademark Pink Lady has high standards for

the apples, so about 65% of the crop that

doesn’t reach the trademark’s standards

(mainly based on color intensity and the

sugar/acid balance) are sold as Cripps Pink,

which is why both types of apples can be

found in stores today.

Lineage

The Cripps Pink/Pink Lady apple is a breed

between the Lady Williams and the Golden

Delicious apples. The distinctive coloring

came from the Lady Williams apple, while

the crisp, sweet flavor comes from the

Golden Delicious apple. The Lady Williams

apple was not very well known in places like

Europe and North America, but was widely

grown in Australia at the time the breed was

created, while the Golden Delicious was one

of the most important apple varieties of the

20th century.

The Wonderful World of the Pink Lady Apple

What I Think

In my opinion, the pink lady apple was the

best apple out of all the ones that our

classes got to taste. The apple was very

sweet and decently juicy, and it had the

perfect amount of crispiness to go with it.

The apple wasn’t very tart, however, so if

you are a person who likes their apples to

have a high level of tart flavor, this is not

the apple for you. Other than for the

tartness, this apple is definitely one of the

best apples on the market! Whenever I see

these apples in the market, I just have to

buy a couple of them to enjoy, and once

you taste one, you will find yourself with a

sudden craving for Pink Lady apples!
