Q-2 Was there a succession plan problem at Apple given that Tim Cook had done a good job each time Jobs was on leave from the company? Support your answer with sound justification.

Yes there was a succession plan problem at Apple for the following reasons-

The company maintained that it had a succession plan in place but would not disclose it but this was not evident to the investors and shareholders of the company.

Tim Cook was given the responsibility for the day to day operations but all the major strategic decisions for the company was made by Jobs himself.

Analysts felt that there was another potential successor Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of worldwide product marketing.

Q-3 Apple had a culture of secrecy. How much did this impact the success of the company? You may go beyond case facts to support your answer.

• There was tight control of information in the company. Because of this strategy, Apple Inc. was always ahead of its competitors as they were never aware of Apple’s next move.

• Apple never disclosed its succession plans. Apple thought that if they disclosed this information then it would definitely go to their competitors which would ultimately invite them to recruit high-value executives away from Apple Inc.

• Apple launched a new operating system platform for smartphones called “iOs” in June 2007. In September 2008, Google came up with an operating system platform called “Android”.
