Jacksonville Middle School During the second 6-weeks, there was a lot going on at JMS. Students and Teachers are set- tling in to a routine and working hard in the classroom. As is the custom at JMS, we did have some fun. We cele- brated Spirit Week during homecoming with each day representing a different type of dress. Students came dressed in blue, yellow, and even were allowed to paint their faces on Friday of homecoming. At the end of October, we celebrated Red Ribbon week with JMS students coming together to stomp out drug use. Both weeks were so much fun for the faculty and students and we look forward to having even more fun with these two weeks next year. 7th Grade—7th grade Reading stu-dents contin-ued learning

about Genres of Literature by reading Mythology during the

2nd 6-weeks. We enjoyed listening to “Demeter and Per-sephone” in class and learned how to analyze literature by identifying the setting, discuss-ing character development, and defining the story’s con-flict.

7th Grade Reading teach-ers are looking forward to see-ing how the students perform on our Reading Benchmark on November 13th. They hope their students read carefully and use the strategies that they have been taught so far this year.

Each Reading and Lan-guage Arts teacher is now par-ticipating in Box Tops for Edu-cation. We are enjoying the competition as we see which team brings in the most box tops. The team who wins will

be rewarded with a party at the end of the school year.

7th Grade Writing—Seventh grade

Language Arts classes are working on becoming better authors by add-

ing emotion, dialogue and meaning

to personal narrative compositions.

All three writing teachers recently

returned from The Writing Academy conference in Kemah, TX. While they

were there, they learned several new writing strategies that will be imple-

mented in their classrooms.

Part of The Writing Academy tradi-

tion is to hold a bucket decorating contest for teachers to participate in

while they are at the academy. Mrs. Welch too on the challenge and won

first place with her “Ice Cream Buck-et.” The contest was posted on the JMS

Facebook page, and the writing de-

partment would like to that everyone who voted in the contest to help Mrs.

Welch win some free prizes for her classroom!

8th Grade— Our readers are

becoming READING SUPER-

HEROS as we close out the 2nd six

weeks. Poetry proved no match for

our reading superpowers. We

have mastered the challenge of figurative language and con-

quered academic vocabulary.

More recently, we have waged a

campaign to discover each part of

plot development in an effort to emerge victorious protagonists in

the near future. Next, we will

delve into character traits, theme,

and drama. Stay tuned for the next

exciting installment of READING

SUPERHEROS!

8th Grade— We are focusing

on how the colonist built the

nation. Students are learning

about the construction of the

U.S. Constitution and the inclu-

sion of the Bill of Rights. We

are learning why it was so im-

portant to have a limited gov-

ernment and how that led to a

separation of powers. We are

analyzing the U.S. Constitution

in order to understand how it

was important in strengthening

a young nation while protecting

the citizens. We also want

students to recognize the

7th Grade—Our

students are learn-

ing about the caus-

es and effects of

the Texas Revolution and how

Texas entered the United States

as the 28th state. They have

also learned about the similari-

ties and differences among the

various cultures and how each

culture plays an important role

in today’s society.

day’s world. Many forget that

the Constitution is a living docu-

ment and meant to be timeless

and applied to all situations.

7th Grade—The 2nd

six weeks started out with the

final concepts we needed to

review to start our new text-

book. Chapter 1 included all

the material that we reviewed

form the beginning of school. It

also incorporated positive and

negative signs on whole num-

bers, decimals, and fractions.

Tis allowed students to see how

rational numbers are a collec-

tion of natural numbers, whole

numbers and integers with ter-

minating and repeating deci-

mals and fractions.

The final week of the six

weeks was spent on rates, unit

rates, and how to solve propor-

tions. We are taking a bench-

mark test on November 13th.

Students have been learning

skills that are essential to every-

day life. Please talk to your

children about what they are

learning in Math to help us rein-

force why learning math is im-

portant for their future.

8th Grade— We have been very

busy in 8th grade math this sec-

ond six weeks. Concepts have

included proportional vs. non-

proportional relationships, linear

relationships, and determining

whether a relation is a function.

We are looking forward to creat-

ing ‘function machines’ very soon.

This last week has kept us very

busy preparing and reviewing for

our benchmark. A lot of success

is evident in the work and dedica-

tion of our students.

to better and further their knowledge with teaching science to middle school stu-dents.

Eighth Grade— After finish-ing up Chemistry, it’s time for target Force and Motion in 8th grade Science. This should prove to be a little less challenging than Chemistry was. We will be moving at a faster pace to make up for time taken for students to learn the Chemistry princi-ples and concepts that we focused on the previous 2 six weeks. Parents, please be aware that since we will be moving faster, your student may need tutorials for a better understanding of the concepts. Take time to ask them what they are learn-ing in school. It helps them to have a better and deeper understanding of the mate-rial when YOU ask them about it. Let them teach

Seventh grade are now study-ing the im-portance of the flow of energy

within the various types of Ecosystems. They are learn-ing about producers and con-sumers as well as predator and prey. Students always seem to like learning about “who eats who” in the world of Science

2014-2015 Science Fair fly-ers are now being passed out. 7th and 8th grade students will get the opportunity to show their creativity by com-peting with other students on creating the best “Variable” project.

All JMS Science teachers will be attending the CAST conference this month In Dallas. Here they will have the opportunity to collaborate with teachers across the state

Since our last newslet-

ter, we have had two more

awesome pep rallies. JMS

is starting to feel the spirit.

Please come out and sup-

port the Braves and Maid-

is upon us. Your fellow

students love to see you at

the games watching them

play and cheering them on.

Algebra—We have been “flipping”

the classroom in Algebra. This is

where students watch video over

Algebra topics at home, and then

work examples in the classroom.

This allows us to complete most of

our work in the classroom. We are

currently studying the slope-

intercept form of a line.

The boys play at home against Nacogdo-ches McMichael on No-vember 17th and then Lufkin comes calling on December 8th. Let’s come out and show our support.

GO BRAVES!!!

The JMS Braves have completed their football season. Coach Nash and his crew are proud of the young men and the growth they showed throughout the season. Now it’s time for basket-ball. We take great pride in the product we put on the court and are looking forward to a fantastic season. Our returning 8th graders are coming off of a district champion-ship last year and we
