This area was also identified by SKEP(Succulent Karoo Ecosystem project)(2006) as one of the nine geographic priority areas that need to be developed sensitively and conserved in order to achieve the conservation targets set for this biodiversity hotspot. These areas contain important habitats that have conservation value and are most vulnerable to increasing land use pressure. (Cntrl. Breede River Valley area no8). . The area also might be part of the WWF LHSKT PRIORITY AREA And possible part of the newly determined CLIMATE CHANGE CORRIDORS. This area is part of the last remaining natural corridor between the Langeberg and the Rivier-Sonderend mountains. If an Environmental impact study was done? We would like to know if care was taken to include all seasons as some vulnerable species can only be observed during autumn to spring and some only during winter ( some of the plants are rare endemics and some are Red List species , personal observation 2014 J.C.Basson). Kind regards

Stakeholder Summarised Responses

Jackie Robinson Requested registration as an IAP. Background Information Document (IAP) and IAPregistration form sent out. No further response received.

Myra Hoffman Requested registration as an IAP. Background Information Document (IAP) and IAPregistration form sent out. No further response received. Comments below werethose received before IAP had read the returned BID.

We are unable to locate this farm on the 1:50 000 map and suspect it must be alater subdivision

We would like to have a grid reference in terms of latitude and longitude ( or a mapindicating the exact property in contexts with other properties) As well as detailindications regarding the footprint of the proposed activities on such property. .

We would like to know if activities are on existing agricultural disturbed areas.

If natural veld , we would like to draw your attention to the Jarman report ( 1987) forlowland Properties and that this area was pointed out in the Jarman report as aPriority Botanical Hotspot.

Recently Cape Nature also identified this area as an Critical Biodiversity area ,during a conservation landscape studies exercise. ( 2014).

Cape nature also regards this area as part of a Threatened Plant Hotspot Priority(0.0000-8.4000) and a conservation Priority area (Garth Mortimer 15 August 2014).

This area was also identified by SKEP(Succulent Karoo Ecosystem project)(2006)as one of the nine geographic priority areas that need to be developed sensitivelyand conserved in order to achieve the conservation targets set for this biodiversityhotspot. These areas contain important habitats that have conservation value andare most vulnerable to increasing land use pressure. (Cntrl. Breede River Valleyarea no8). .

The area also might be part of the WWF LHSKT PRIORITY AREA

And possible part of the newly determined CLIMATE CHANGE CORRIDORS.

This area is part of the last remaining natural corridor between the Langeberg andthe Rivier-Sonderend mountains.

If an Environmental impact study was done? We would like to know if care wastaken to include all seasons as some vulnerable species can only be observedduring autumn to spring and some only during winter ( some of the plants are rareendemics and some are Red List species , personal observation 2014J.C.Basson). Stakeholder Summarised Responses

Alana Duffell-Canham Please refer to Appendix C-3:

Bruce Gibson Requested registration as an IAP. Background Information Document (IAP) and IAPregistration form sent out. No further response received.

Carl Grobbelaar I could not locate this farm on a 1: 50 000 map, I assume it must be a subdivisionwhich was made after the map was last updated?

Could you perhaps provide me with a grid reference in terms of latitude & longitudeor Google Earth place marker?

Has there been previous agricultural disturbance in the area under consideration oris it natural veld?

If natural veld, has an environmental impact study been done which takes intoconsideration that most winter-growing vegetation e.g. geophytes will only beobserved from autumn to spring, some flowering in autumn, a few in winter and mostonly in spring?

My interest stems from several botanical excursions in the general area west ofRobertson several years ago in the company of a previous curator of the KarooBotanical Gardens, Worcester, during which several vulnerable species wereidentified.

Main concern is that the general area is an area of critical biodiversity. Therefore theproposed mining area should be carefully assessed by especially botanists, as mostgeophytes are dormant during summer, flowering in autumn, winter and spring

Even if topsoil is rehabilitated, removal of the clay from the subsoil will substantiallychange the drainage and this affects topsoil microclimate adversely

Werner Voight Requested registration as an IAP. Background Information Document (IAP) and IAPregistration form sent out. No further response received.

Tracey Brunings The application site is zoned Agricultural Zone 1 in terms of the Section 8 ZoningScheme Regulations. The primary use permitted in “Agriculture:, which means “ (a)the cultivation of land…, or (b) the breeding od animals, …,or (c) natural veld, andpomprises only of those activities and buildings that directly relate to the mainfarming activities on the farm… The proposed mining activities do not fall within theabove definition and application must be made to the Langeberg Municipality interms of the Langeberg Land Use Planning Bylaws PN 264/2-15, for a temporarydeparture from the zoning provisions.

In terms of the Langeberg Spatial Development Framework, the farm GannaboschVlakte No 51, Robertson falls within the Core 1 Spatial Planning Category and formspart of an important north-south link between the Langeberg Mountain range andthe Breede River and Riviersonderend Mountain range. The objective of identifiedcore area is to maintain natural areas and ecological processes. The comments ofCape nature will be of particular significance.
