Workplace Bullying Survey Thank you for your interest in completing the Workplace Bullying Survey. This survey is being conducted by UMass Amherst’s Campus Coalition against Workplace Bullying in an effort to understand workplace bullying, and learn more about employees’ experiences with specific behaviors on the job. The Coalition is comprised of the leaders of the largest campus unions and representatives from a growing number of campus departments. The results of this survey will help guide our efforts to promote a healthy and respectful workplace. We invite all UMass Amherst employees to participate in this brief, 10-15 minute survey. The questionnaire asks you to report on whether you have observed or experienced behavior in your workplace that you believe was bullying. It is important that we hear from as many employees as possible, whether or not they have personally experienced bullying. Your responses are completely confidential and will be analyzed only after being grouped together with those of hundreds of other campus employees. The Student Assessment, Research and Evaluation Office (SAREO), an established survey research organization here at UMass Amherst, will analyze the survey results. Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary, and you may skip any questions that you do not wish to answer.

The term “workplace bullying” refers to unreasonable behavior by a person (or group of people) that intimidates, degrades, offends, threatens, or humiliates a worker (or group of workers). Workplace bullying negatively affects the physical or psychological health of the targeted employee(s). Workplace bullying generally involves repeated, unreasonable actions, but it can also be a single, severe action. National data suggest that many behaviors can contribute to workplace bullying. This issue is complicated. No single behavior is necessarily evidence of bullying. Workplace bullying often involves an abuse or misuse of power. However, many bullying situations involve employees bullying their peers. Workplace bullying is not a tough, but fair supervisor; a tough union advocate; a reclusive co-worker.
