over 900,000 people were evacuated in an unprecedented mammoth task from the frontline of

battering cyclonic winds and all of them now in the relief camps. Over 5 lakh hectares of standing crops

have been destroyed by the gushing waters causing an estimated loss of Rs 2,400 crore. The

communications are down and power lines are yet to be repaired. The extent of damage is worse and

yet to be known. NGOs like Sewabharathi are assessing the damage and providing food to hundreds of

thousands who spent the night in shelters.

Sewabharati has opened evacuation and relief centres providing food, shelter, health and emergency

supplies to the Cyclone Phailin victims in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The Odisha Govt asked for 10

crore halogen tablets, 50,000 paracetamol tablets, 50,000 ORS tablets, 250 tonne of bleaching powder.

The cyclone hit the east coast of Indian on Saturday night with winds of around 200 kilometers per hour

(125 miles per hour). It had nearly filled the entire Bay of Bengal, an area the size of France.

Odisha the worst affected needs humanitarian support, hands that can hold together and co-ordinate.

Preliminary estimates suggest the cyclone affected 80 lakh people in Odisha, the state that bore the

brunt of its fury, hitting 14,500 villages and 39 civic bodies as well as 322 villages in Andhra Pradesh.

2.4 lakh kaccha houses had been destroyed in Ganjam Dist alone
