PROGRAmIn 2001, the Ministry of the Environment of Ja-pan established the “Green Purchasing Method,”creating regulations requiring local and nationalgovernments to set targets or green purchasingactivities and or businesses and citizens to practicegreen purchasing to the greatest possible extent. The Green Purchasing Law was revised in 2006 toadd regulations designed to certiy the legality and

sustainability o pulpwood.

In response to the revisions, APP established a “Sel-Certifcation”program, becoming the frst pulp and paper company to do so in Japan. The ultimate goals of the program are threefold:

1. To complement the Green Purchasing Method’s goal to requiregreen purchasing by governments and promote greenpurchasing by Japan’s businesses and citizens

2. To certify the legality and sustainability of pulpwood productswithin APP’s operations as spelled out in the Green Purchasinglaw by creating:

• Comprehensive standards and procedures for APP andits fber suppliers

• A strict ber procurement and sustainability policy• A GPL certication policy & code of conduct

3. To provide a foundation for APP’s Sustainability Reporting andearn environmental certifcations rom third-party environmentalorganizations recognized in Japan
