Demographics on Asian American

Immigrants • In the US, Asian Immigrants (foreign born)

are 10.6 million• In 2009, California had the largest number

of API residents (32.8% of the total Asian-born population in the United States)

• The number of Asian immigrants in Sacramento was 57% in 2011

• According to the University of Southern California, there are approximate 270,000 immigrants residing in Sacramento County

Therefore…• About one-third of Asian Americans are limited-

English proficient and experience some degree of difficulty communicating in English (In the US).

• About 47% of Americans who are age five or older speak other language at home other than English, and Asian language in general, had increased more than 75% than the census.

• This increasing number of Asian languages spoken at home has lead to the percentage of immigrants who struggle to speak and write in English.

• Therefore, the language barrier contributes to the adjustment period.

Mission Statement

• API Youth Resource Center is a non-profit community based organization seeking to empower the youth in the API community to embrace their cultural heritage and identity. Our goal is to bring cultural awareness to these youths’, and to communicate the importance of understanding their identity as an Asian American. Through this effort, we hope to break down any language barrier that may exist within the community.

Counse

lors

• Counselors provide guidance to teens in applying for colleges and scholarships

• Many immigrant teens don’t go on to college due to lack of guidance and information or because they can’t afford it

• A counselor can also be someone for these teens to talk to about family and social life

Page 8: API Youth Resource Center A Way to Break Down the Barrier.

Recreation and Sports• Social interaction through recreation

breaks down unfamiliarity, fear and isolation, factors associated with racism; and promotes positive contact between different ethnic groups and the broader community. The strength of a community is increased through recreation activities that allow people to share cultural and ethnic differences.

Field

Trip

s• Many of these API teens

will come from low income families who can’t afford to go to many places

• We can offer field trips and take these children to places such as Asian museums

• This can help attract more people to come to the API Youth Resource Center
