Then, the Arocentric design o the ’80s and ’90s overwhelmed rooms with excesses o Arican masks and animal prints. Although those eras will orever hold a nostalgic place in our hearts, the new Black home is a personalized hybrid o cultures, styles and avors. From an industrial lof in Brooklyn to a bungalow in New Orleans or a Caliornia ranch, Arican- American homeowners are tasteully incorporating global elements—such as textiles, patterns, wallpaper, art and accents—into their spaces where distinctive style reigns supreme. It is this new wave o interior design that inspired husband-and-wie duo Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason to write Remix: De corati ng Wit h Culture, Objects and Soul  ($30; Potter Style). “As a design lover, I’ve always wanted to have a book that showcases diverse amilies o Arican descent who have amazing interiors,” says Hays, co- ounder o the textiles brand and blog AphroChic. “It’s not something that  you nd leang t hrough the na tional home-decor magazines.” What began as a ruitless search or a pillow with a woman sporting an Aro turned into a six-year project to showcase their variety o elegant edge. From Congolese kuba prints in the kids’ rooms to original works o art by Mark Bradord or Kenturah Davis in the oyer , Mason says contemporary Black homeowners “nd clever ways to blend heritage, where [they] come rom and point o view in ways that warm up what can be a cold standard in modern design.” In advance o the November release o Remix , the Philadelphia couple shows othree extraordinary spaces to demonstrate their style.
