What is Intelligence?

• Intelligence is what intelligence test measure• Does not objectively exist. More a subjective

concept• Some view intelligence as one ability (e.g.

general intelligence) while others view it asmultiple (e.g. eight intelligences)

Dynamics of Intelligence• Stability vs. Change?

– After age 4 intelligence test results are fairly stable notchanging very much

– This means high scoring 4 year olds tend to becomehigh scoring adolescents and adults

• Lower Extremes of Intelligence – The lower extremes of intelligence (70 and below) can

be caused by a physical problem (e.g. down

syndrome) but is not always – The modern opinion on how to care for people on the

low extreme is to encourage them to live as normal ofa life as they can

Bias

• When it comes to intelligence testing there istwo definitions of bias.

– The scientific definition- Which has to do morewith the test’s reliability based on the way it isadministered etc.

– Cultural Bias- This is the inability of some test

takers new to a culture that are unable to answerquestions specific to that culture
