SHOW ME WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ~ PSYCHOLOGY MAGAZINE

Individual or Partner Project For your final project, you will produce your own psychology magazine. The magazine should demonstrate things you have learned about psychology as well as your ability to express yourself in writing and other creative ways. You may work independently or with a partner. You will choose a theme for your magazine that will correspond with ONE of the following units studied during this course:

Learning Thinking and Language Biology and Nature v. Nurture Development Personality Psychological Disorders and Therapy Motivation and Stress & Health Social Psychology Sensation & perception States of Consciousness

Every magazine must include:

For each individual in the group: One per Group: 1 Article (50 points) Cover (15 points) 1 Movie review (25 points) Sources page (15 points) 500 word Advice column (25 points) Presentation (20 points) TOTAL ________/200 **if working individually, you will automatically earn 100 points to account for not having a partner**

Steps for completing the magazine:

1. Choose your partner. You may work alone but that will increase your overall workload. 2. Brainstorm ideas and discuss what each person wants to do so that there won’t be overlap in the finished product (in other words, you

don’t want two movie reviews on the same film). 3. Do the background work—planning, drawing, researching, writing rough drafts, etc. 4. Decide which program/template to use. 5. Share your phone/email/etc. info so you can contact each other. 6. Write the finished articles, type everything up, PROOFREAD everything, complete artwork, add appropriate pictures and put it all

together. Decide on the order of all submissions/content and make a table of contents. All pieces must be spellchecked and have appropriate language and grammar.

7. No tech excuses.

Criteria for completing your magazine submissions… Articles Your article may be a profile the life of a prominent psychologist and his/her contribution to the field. It may be informative on a specific issue (“How to Improve Your Memory” or “Five Easy Ways to Lower Your Stress Levels”). This cannot simply be something cut and paste from your textbook or some other source. It must be done in your own words and reflect your personal learning on the subject. Your article should be at least one page (before pictures are added), size 12 font, 1” margins, 1.5 spacing, either two or three columns, etc. Use of pictures will increase the required length of your article. Movie Review Pick a movie that you have personally seen that illustrated concepts related to your theme. The movie may be one currently out in theaters or one available on DVD. Rate the movie based on a four star rating (4 being the best) with the reasons for your rating. You must include analysis of the psychological validity or accuracy of the content. Your movie review should be at least 1/2 page (before pictures are added), size 12 font, 1” margins, 1.5 spaced, either in two or three columns, etc. YOU MAY NOT REVIEW ANY FILMS WE HAVE WATCHED DURING THE COURSE OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR. Advice Column You should create an advice column (Dear Sigmund Freud, for example) in which a person writes to you about a problem he/she is having and asks for advice. The advice should illustrate knowledge of specific psychological concepts within the theme/focus of your magazine. Each person in the group (if working with a partner) should answer a different question for the column. Again, make sure all questions and answers relate to your chosen theme. Sources page Your final page should be a credits page that lists the sources you chose to use to help you create your magazine. You must use more than just your textbook as a source. You may use Academic Premier, magazines in the media center, online sources, the DSM~V, etc. Make sure to give credit where credit is due! No Wikipedia, thanks. Cite your sources in APA Format. Cartoon – you may replace any one item per TEAM with a cartoon that you create using software. If you have artistic talent, you may draw an original cartoon that includes a caption, illustrating a piece of your chosen theme. You must include a brief description/explanation/interpretation of the cartoon to demonstrate understanding of relevant content. If you have little artistic talent, you may create a cartoon using an online cartoon maker. Two possible web sites are:

www.toondo.com www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/comic/index.html

GRADING Each person in the group (if working with a partner) will earn an individual grade. Failure to contribute to the group effort on group pieces or complete individual pieces will negatively impact your grade. Class time will be given to work on the magazine. Computer time will be set up. Failure to attend class to work on the magazine will also impact your grade. Failure to complete this assignment ON TIME will cause your Final Exam grade to take a huge hit. All pieces will be graded based on accuracy, displayed knowledge of the content, and completion following all listed criteria. Realize that all criteria detailed above are the minimum you need to do to earn a good grade. You may certainly feel free to make submissions longer or insert extras. Make sure that ALL individual items document the creator (who wrote which article, etc.). Plagiarism = 0 for the entire team ~ Just don’t…I will catch you and you will be sad…

The Psychology Game Individual or Partner Project Task: For this project, you will need to create a game to demonstrate your understanding of the concepts you have learned in psychology. This game may be focused on individual units of study within the course (Neuro, Development, Social Psych, etc.) or may be cumulative in nature. Your game can take any form you like. Your game format can be modeled after existing games and their goals (Monopoly, Sorry, Trivial Pursuit, etc.) or you may create an entirely unique game.

Points: You may work individually or with a partner, but you will be graded individually on your group’s decided and assigned responsibilities and

contributions. If you are working with a partner, you should make a list of each students’ responsibilities in completing the project and turn this in with your final product. Criteria and point breakdown: Clear instructions and rules (40 points) You must have written instructions that include: the object of the game, the rules for play, the rules for winning, and anything else players need to know. Equipment & Design (30 points) You must design and create whatever equipment is necessary to play your game. This includes things such as the game board, playing pieces, question cards, etc. Your design must be intentional and match the focus of the content your game is supposed to be about (Images, playing pieces, questions, etc. that deal with Sensation/Senses if that is the unit of study you are creating a game for, etc.). Creativity and color should

be used in your design of the game’s equipment. Demonstration of concepts (125 points) Your game must demonstrate (and must require players to demonstrate) an understanding of psychology. Specifically, you must utilize at least 25 terms and concepts from psychology. This work must be divided equally among the members of your group. You need to list the terms/concepts that each group member was responsible for on your group member responsibilities listing (see below). Group Member Responsibilities Listing ~ see next page (5 points)

If you are working with a partner, you should make a list of each students’ responsibilities in completing the project, including a listing of the

terms/concepts that each member was responsible for, and turn this in with your final product. DON’T BE A SOCIAL LOAFER!! NO ONE LIKES

THEM…

Psychology goes to Madison Avenue (created by Steve Jones ~ [email protected]) Individual Project Imagine that you are a famous figure in the history of psychology and that in addition to doing your research and teaching you have decided to open a business based on your work. Your task is to choose TWO of the following psychologists, do research to find out more about their contributions to the field of psychology, and then create a business for each psychologist that focuses on their work. For example, if you chose B.F. Skinner, the business you would create might focus on his work with animals in developing his theories about operant conditioning. The business might look something like this:

Skinner’s Pet Peeves! We offer training for animals using reinforcement and punishment.

Our specialty is rats and pigeons. Psychologists you may choose from: Ivan Pavlov John Watson Sigmund Freud Carl Rogers Abraham Maslow Jean Piaget Carl Jung Erik Erikson Albert Bandura Stanley Milgram Solomon Asch Philip Zimbardo Harry Harlow Mary Ainsworth If you have other suggestions for psychologists, please check with me before going on. In addition to a clever/creative business name, you will need to create the following FOR EACH psychologist’s business:

a business logo (5 points for each psychologist) an advertisement (TV, radio or print) (30 points for each psychologist)…I will not be able to troubleshoot tech issues, so choose wisely! a pamphlet/handout that accurately touts & explains what services your business offers (based on the theories/research of your

chosen psychologists) (50 points for each psychologist) IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO SIMPLE STATE “OPERANT CONDITIONING USED TO TRAIN, ETC.” YOU MUST BRIEFLY EXPLAIN TO PATRONS HOW THE SERVICE/PROVIDED HELP WORKS. In other words, you demonstrate that you understand the content/concepts.

Creativity/Design/Color/Presentation (5 points for each psychologist) You will be graded on your creativity and how accurately you reflect the psychologists work as evidenced in the logo, advertisement, and in the descriptions of the services offered in your pamphlet. See examples beginning on next page.

Everything I Need to Know About Psychology, I Learned from… Individual Assignment

For this project, you will identify and apply 15 different psychology terms/concepts that we have learned this year to the same source. You may use a movie, TV show, commercials, or genre of same media (i.e. Friends, Parks & Rec., Criminal Minds, or more general like Horror Movies) For each term or concept, you will complete two things:

1. Create a digital scrapbook of the 15 items using clips for each term/concept. You may use any presentation software you choose, but use the same one for all 15 terms. Using Prezi is convenient and allows you to embed the video directly in the presentation and it is easily shared with me. Be sure to cut/crop the video down to just the clip needed that demonstrates the concept (I can help/show you how to do this) or to note what time to start/stop the video. You may use a single clip to demonstrate more than one concept, but the concepts must all be explained/applied independently (see below). YOU MAY NOT USE ANY CLIPS THAT WERE USED DURING CLASS THIS YEAR.

2. Itemize and apply/explain each of the terms – this can be done separately in Word or Docs or it can be embedded in the presentation/digital scrapbook. Following the format below, explain (using at least 50 words) how the term or concept applies to what is portrayed in the clip. A DEFINITION ALONE WILL NOT SCORE!

For each video clip:

Number the term portrayed, Identify/Name the term, If done separate from the digital scrapbook, provide a link to the video(see example). Link the minimum amount of video needed to

demonstrate the term or concept. (less than 5 minutes preferably) Use the following format for each:

Term #: Term/concept URL/link to video source (Space)

Cite your source using APA format (space) Description/Explanation of how the term applies to the video clip – DEFINITIONS ALONE WILL NOT EARN POINTS!

Examples: Term 1: Classical Conditioning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE8pFWP5QDM kirksay5. “Pavlov Theory.” Online video clip. You Tube. YouTube, 16 Oct. 2011. Web. 7 Nov. 2014. In this video, Jim is attempting to recreate Pavlov’s experiment with his co-worker, Dwight. Jim is pretending to have to restart his computer many times, and each time his computer makes the sound of restarting, he is offering Dwight an Altoid candy. He is attempting to condition Dwight by associating the sound of restarting the computer with an Altoid. In the end, Jim was able to condition Dwight that upon hearing the sound of a computer restarting, he wanted an Altoid candy.

Term 2: Selective Attention https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ttsx5squWg Beats by Dre. “Beats by Dre x Colin Kaepernick: Hear What You Want Commercial.”

Online video clip. You Tube. YouTube. 8 Dec, 2013. Web. 20 Sept. 2015.

Selective Attention is the focusing of conscious awareness on a particular stimulus. In this commercial, Colin Kaepernick, an athlete is faced with very loud, negative attention that could easily distract him. The athlete deals with the negative attention by putting on the head phones, Beats by Dre, to block out all the negative attention and focus on whatever he chooses. SCORING FOR EACH TERM/CONCEPT: 180 POINTS ~ 12 POINTS FOR EACH ACCURATE EXPLANATION/APPLICATION OF THE TERM/CONCEPT TO THE VIDEO CLIP. (12 X 15 = 180 POINTS) 15 POINTS ~ NUMBERED TERMS/CONCEPTS, FUNCTIONING VIDEO LINKS/CLIPS, APA FORMAT CITATIONS 5 POINTS ~ PRESENTATION CLARITY, DESIGN, LAYOUT, VISUAL APPEAL. TOTAL: 200 POINTS
