Where Do you stand?

DirectionsI will read several statements about population growthYou should move to the area that most closely represents your reaction to that statementIn each group, at least one person will be asked to explain their particular stand on that topicBefore your turn, paraphrase what others have said. If you are persuaded to move, you may do so at any time

With the human population at seven billion and growing, we must protect remaining endangered species habitats by not developing on them for any reason

Because developed countries like the United States create most of the pollution, it is their responsibility to clean it up, not the developing nations

Governments in countries with fast-growing populations should make laws to limit the number of children that couples can have

In a real crunch, jobs are more important than protecting the environment

Arable land should never be used for housing, businesses, or other non-agricultural uses because we need all available farmable land to produce food

All high schools should distribute free contraceptives to students in order to help prevent teen pregnancies

Because our population will soon be at eight billion people and continues to grow, we need to expand land area available for living and growing food by cutting down rain forests.

Unless we reduce the rate of population growth, it will be impossible to solve the worlds global challenges.

Science and technology will ensure that food production and energy supplies keep up with the demands of a growing population.

With seven billion people commuting from one place to another, drilling for more oil is necessary to fuel more cars.

In order to feed our growing population, we must use pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and genetically modified crops to increase efficiency, even if those practices cause pollution

The Earth can support seven billion people now and will be able to support any number of humans in the future.

In an effort to feed a population of seven billion, people in developed countries should reduce the amount of meat they consume.

There is nothing I can do to help alleviate population pressures.

With seven billion people on the planet, water pollution is inevitable and we should not waste money trying to prevent it.

Even though I am only one person in seven billion, I still have a responsibility to keep the Earth healthy; what I do makes a difference

If China and India can each take care of over a billion people on relatively the same size land as the U.S., then the U.S. should accept immigrants until it reaches a billion people as well.

Because people in developed lands have a bigger impact on the environment, it is necessary to have limits on the number of children a couple can have

Even if it conflicts with their culture or religion, women should have equal rights as men in all countries

Follow UpChoose one of the statements that provoked a strong reaction to you

Write a short response on your stance (1-2 paragraphs) in order to convince someone else to believe as you do.

While emotion is a powerful motivator, it is important to use facts to support your argument
