Greetings! Welcome to AOPA’s Aviation Summit. I’m excited to have you here as we join together to “Rally GA!”
There’s so much going on over the next few days that it’s impossible to do it all—but I invite you to have fun trying.
This year’s Summit offers dozens of seminars designed to help you get the most out of your flying by helping you stay healthy, fly safely, and find great new ways to enjoy your time in the left seat.
In the exhibit hall, you can find the latest tools, avionics, and innovations from all the top names in general aviation. Hands-on displays and product demonstrations let you explore the newest developments in everything from headsets to glass panel displays.
At Airportfest, you can get close to some of the world’s most beautiful aircraft, including classic warbirds, brand new light sport aircraft, very light jets, experimental airplanes, and everything in between.
Each day we’ll bring you the decision makers who change the way we fly, including top elected and appointed officials. Morning keynotes will cover the issues that matter the most to us as pilots while interviews with leaders in the general aviation community will take place throughout the day on the AOPA Live stage in the exhibit hall. Don’t worry if you can’t take it all in—we’ll be archiving AOPA Live so you can watch online.
With so much going on, I hope you’ll also take some time to simply enjoy the company of your fellow aviators. After all, sharing stories with people who can truly understand and appreciate them is always a fun part of any gathering of pilots. Whether you’re simply mingling at Airportfest or taking part in one of the many social events scheduled throughout the coming days, I encourage you to get to know your fellow AOPA members—they’re an amazing group of individuals who share a passion for flying.
It’s going to be a great few days. Thanks for being part of it.
Sincerely,
Craig L. FullerAOPA PRESIDENT AND CEO

8 AOPA AVIATION SUMMIT 2011
Cirrus Aircraft welcomes you to the 2011 AOPA
Aviation Summit! This is general aviation’s premier
event; three days to celebrate — and educate — all
the freedoms and joys of aviation. Whether you’ve
been flying for decades or are taking your first
steps toward your license or aircraft ownership, this
is the time and place to meet with industry experts,
discover the latest achievements in technology and
stay up-to-date with advancements in safety.
When you make the transition from dreaming
of flying to becoming a pilot, you’re joining an elite
lifestyle shared by a select few that goes beyond
a mere hobby. It doesn’t matter where you come
from or what you fly, all pilots share a desire for
adventure, a dedication to
safety and a willingness—
often a compulsion—to share
their love of the unique expe-
rience of flight.
By attending the AOPA Summit, you’re not just
showing your support for general aviation, but for
an organization that tirelessly champions us all. On
behalf of everyone at Cirrus Aircraft, I thank you
for joining us this year in Hartford and hope you
return for many years to come.

On behalf of DTC DUAT, we would like to welcome you to
the great state of Connecticut and the beautiful city of
Hartford. We at DTC are very proud and excited to again
be the Diamond Sponsor for the best general aviation
function on the show circuit—AOPA Aviation Summit.
DTC DUAT is an FAA-sponsored weather briefing and
flight planning service that is provided, primarily, for the
GA community. We have had the contract to provide
this service since the inception of the program, over 22
years ago. We like to believe that, over that period, we
have managed to “get it right” and have demonstrated
that we offer a very mature, stable service. Our approach
has been to focus on the basic elements of safety, while
subscribing to feedback that we have
received from our many users. We
are constantly striving to set a higher
standard and make our product the
best it can be.
Thank you for coming and enjoy the 2011 Summit. We
hope that you will stop by and see us during the show at
our booth, #719, or at the Internet Café.

Aspen Customer Gallery: Thom Blischok’s Cessna T310R
“The choice was simple…I like lots of redundancy”
"I bought N310AR with plans to make her as perfect as possible for two reasons: rst, safety and second, I simply wanted an airplane that I could be proud of every time I ew her. When it came time to overhaul the panel, I chose Aspen glass primarily because of the system redundancy it oers, as well as the signicant situational awareness capabilities. Flying safety is all about eective situational awareness. My home base is Phoenix and it can be challenging to maneuver the high-density training environment as well as being mindful of the surrounding terrain. The ability to congure and manage the Aspen information dynamically is very, very powerful.”

On behalf of the thousands of men and women
around the world who work for Cessna, thank
you for supporting general aviation by attend-
ing the 2011 AOPA Aviation Summit. Now that
you’re here, please take advantage of this unique
opportunity to interact with the aviation, policy
and political leaders who help shape the future of
general aviation.
Cessna is honored to return as a sponsor of
this annual event, an event that we consider to be
one of the premier general aviation gatherings of
the year.
One hundred years ago, Clyde Cessna accom-
plished his first successful flight in an airplane
he’d designed and built. No doubt that was a
turning point in Clyde’s budding aviation pursuits
that led to many more milestones and eventually
the founding of Cessna
Aircraft Company in 1927.
Here we are today—100
years after that success-
ful flight, 84 years after
Cessna Aircraft Company
was founded, and 15 years
since the restart of our
single-engine piston production lines—working
to defend Clyde’s legacy by continuing to inno-
vate and grow with the products and services we
bring to the general aviation market.
Thank you for your support of Cessna and AOPA.

5,000 influential aircraft created for one reason: YOU.
Twelve short years ago, Cirrus entered the world
of aircraft manufacturing challenged to be more
innovative, raise the bar on comfort and champion
safety. Five thousand aircraft later, general aviation
is a very different place because of us.
To celebrate, we made number 5,000 a very special
plane. If you think the first 4,999 were impressive,
join us at booth 801 to see what’s next.

AOPA Aviation Summit Keynote Presentations
Thursday Keynote: The Future of AviationJoin AOPA Presi-dent Craig Fuller for this two-part conversation about the technol-ogy and policy that will change the way you fly. First, special guest Louis Chênevert, president and CEO of United Technolo-gies, will talk about the innovations that have transformed aviation and offer a
preview of some of the exciting new initiatives. Then Craig Fuller’s team of AOPA experts talk about the tug-of-war going on in Washington D.C.; state efforts to raise
revenue from pilots; building the next gen-eration of aviators; and pressures that are reshaping the GA industry.
Friday Keynote: Meet the AdministratorNo single agency has more influence on how we fly than the FAA. Hear directly from FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt as he answers the questions pilots are asking—questions about funding, priori-
ties, regulatory policy, the role of general aviation in the national transportation system, and more. Administrator Babbitt will share his perspective on the state of general aviation today and talk about the FAA’s focus for 2012 and beyond in an in-depth conversation with AOPA President Craig Fuller.
Saturday Keynote with Pancake Breakfast: Working Together to Ensure Our FutureThe pilot popu-lation has been steadily declining for decades—we need to know why and what we can do about it. AOPA President Craig Fuller and EAA President Rod Hightower will share the stage and their ideas about opening aviation to a new generation of pilots. Get the inside scoop on scholarship and other incentive programs from AOPA and EAA, our ongoing work to lower the student pilot dropout rate, the EAA Young Eagles program and more in this informa-tive and inspirational conversation.

A NIGHT FOR FLIGHT
20 AOPA AVIATION SUMMIT 2011
You love to fly. You love the sheer joy of it, to stay connected, for transportation and for business.
You are a pilot—it’s not just what you do, it’s who you are.
Protect what you love! Be part of A Night for Flight, a very special benefit for the AOPA Foundation on September 22 at the Connecticut Convention Cen-ter in Hartford, Connecticut, during the AOPA Aviation Summit.
Your participation is vital. When you take part in A Night for Flight, you are helping to fund the critical and tax exempt work of the AOPA Foundation. This is about the real future of GA. It’s about safety for all pilots and their pas-sengers; it’s about growing the pilot population and improving flight training.
Without pilots there won’t be much need for airports or aircraft; it’s about educat-ing communities and the media on the value of GA airports and the activity we cherish. The U.S. is the last country to have any significant GA flight operations and we need to preserve the future.

AOPA Live made its debut at AOPA Aviation Summit 2009 and was an instant success. Now a mainstay in AOPA’s com-munications repertoire, AOPA Live is more exciting and more engaging than ever before. With live interviews, enhanced video storytelling, and up-to-the-minute reporting, AOPA Live brings the news and events of general aviation to life.
At AOPA Aviation Summit 2011 join AOPA President Craig Fuller, AOPA Live Anchor MayCay Beeler, and other top aviation industry leaders and influencers, live from the Summit exhibit hall floor to hear about the topics that affect you. AOPA Live is brought to you by UTC.
New this year to the AOPA Live stage is “Dogfight,” the highly acclaimed AOPA Pilot magazine feature that pits editors Thomas A. Horne and Dave Hirschman against one another in a discussion of a controversial aviation topic. See their “fight” live on AOPA Live daily (www.aopa.org/summit/aopa-live-schedule).
AOPA Live will have veteran report-ers Natasha Stenbock and Paul Moses on the exhibit floor, at Airportfest, and at all of the industry events reporting live to the Summit stage.
The schedule of events for AOPA Live is available on the Summit Mobile app as well as posted daily on the show floor. The AOPA Live stage is located in the Exhibit Hall.
AOPA Live Anchor MayCay BeelerMayCay Beeler was born in Washing-ton, D.C., and grew up in our nation’s capital. After attending Montana State University and graduating from the University of Kentucky, Beeler found her niche on the small screen and big sky. Her professional broadcasting career includes news anchoring, reporting, and weather reporting for news affiliates in Tennessee and North Carolina. She is a commercial pilot, airline transport pilot, former char-ter pilot, and FAA flight instructor. In 2002, Beeler was named the FAA Avia-tion Safety Counselor of the Year for the southern United States. She is an active member of The Ninety-Nines, the Inter-national Organization of Women Pilots, and serves as the aerospace education chairman and news reporter for the Kitty Hawk chapter.
Natasha Stenbock, AOPA Live ReporterAfter graduating from Pepperdine University with a B.A. in telecommunica-tions/broadcasting, Natasha Stenbock

AOPA SWEEPSTAKES
36 AOPA AVIATION SUMMIT 2011
2011 SweepstakesThe “Crossover Classic” Sweepstakes
For 2011, AOPA’s “Crossover Classic”—a fully restored and updated 1974 Cessna 182P—will be given away as AOPA’s annual sweepstakes airplane. Bought from a long-time owner in Middletown, Ohio, this airplane has benefitted from perhaps the most extensive refurbishment of any of AOPA’s sweeps offerings.
First off, Air Plains (of Wellington, Kansas) replaced the airplane’s stock, 230-hp Continental O-470 engine with a 300-hp Continental IO-550. Presto! 70 more horsepower, and now 162-knot cruise speeds are possible. Also added were a new Hartzell three-blade propeller and Flint Aero wingtip fuel tanks that hold 12 gallons per side. Total fuel capacity? 98 gallons. Couple that with the airplane’s speed and you have a very unique Skylane indeed.
Advantage Avionics of Chino, California then gutted the original panel and installed Garmin’s G500, two-screen display system, plus twin GPS receivers and Garmin’s GTS 800 traffic advisory system. JP Instruments supplied its EDM-930 engine data monitor, PS Engineering brought its Bluetooth-capable PMA 8000BT audio panel to the cockpit, L-3 Communications added its Trilogy elec-tronic standby instrument system, and CO Guardian supplied its carbon monoxide detector—which doubles as a clock and cabin altitude alert. Speaking of altitude capability, Mountain High equipped the plane with one of its portable oxygen systems. Oh, and there’s Cobham/S-TEC’s System Fifty-Five X autopilot. All this, and more, make for a highly capable front office, complete with XM WX datalink weather.
The 1970’s red-fabric interior was replaced by a newly-designed, all- leather conversion created by Air Mod of Batavia, Ohio. This included new side panels, new windows from LP Aero Plastics, and AmSafe’s seatbelt air bag system. Saircorp pro-vided its very popular center console, and new control yokes from Avion Research round out the interior work package.
The final touches came from Scheme Designers, who developed the paint scheme, and BOSS Aircraft Refinishers of Salisbury, North Carolina, which applied the Sher-win-Williams paint.
Bottom line? The airplane is a fast, capable, and comfortable as it is good-looking.
2012 SweepstakesThe “Tougher Than a Tornado Husky” Sweepstakes
Even for an airplane built for adventure, the AOPA 2012 “Tougher Than A Tornado Husky” has had an eventful young life. The brand new airplane was damaged in the March 31 Sun’n Fun tornado that destroyed dozens of airplanes all around it. Although scarred, the Tornado Husky was patched up enough to fly home to the Aviat Aircraft factory in Wyoming where the craftsmen who built it returned it to perfect condition. The Tornado Husky is now ready to take on the wilderness with oversized Alaskan Bushwheels, a Garmin 696 GPS with terrain warnings, and vortex generators that allow exceptional short-field performance. It’s also refined with a leather inte-rior, teak floor, LED lights, and Oregon Aero seats that make long flights comfortable. This rugged, versatile aircraft can vault mountains, land almost anywhere, and trans-port its winner to exciting locations from the arctic to the equator. And wherever the winner of this outstanding aircraft flies, he or she can travel with confidence knowing this tested airplane can meet any challenge. This dog will hunt, and it will be antici-pating your admiration at Airportfest!
So, who won it? We’ll let you know this weekend. Maybe it’s already yours, and you don’t know it! Stop by the static display at the Hartford-Brainard Airport and take a good look at this remarkable airplane!

SUMMIT AWARDS
Joseph B. “Doc” Hartranft Jr., Award
(R-Mo.) is the 2011 recipient of the Joseph B. “Doc” Hartranft Jr., Award – one of AOPA’s two highest honors—for his tireless work on behalf of general aviation in the United States Congress. The Hartranft Award is presented annually to an elected or appointed government official, whether federal, state, local, or foreign, who has made significant contributions to the advancement of general aviation.
As co-chair of the General Aviation Caucus, Congressman Graves spearheaded a GA Caucus letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requesting that the Commission take all necessary steps to protect GPS from interference without
imposing additional cost burdens on GPS users. The letter was signed by 36 members of the Caucus.
He argued successfully to have several general aviation-friendly provisions included in the House FAA Reauthorization bill and has been an outspoken critic of user fees. And he has been a strong advocate against onerous security regulations on general aviation, and led the fight against the TSA’s original Large Aircraft Security Program (LASP).
As a pilot himself, Congressman Graves truly ‘gets’ general aviation. His work on behalf of his fellow pilots epitomizes what defines a Hartranft Award winner.
The Joseph B. “Doc” Hartranft Jr., Award is named for AOPA’s first employee, longtime president and former chairman of the board. Recipients of the award are outstanding advocates of general aviation. Their selection can be based on one action or a series of actions resulting in a benefit to general aviation in the areas of utiliza-tion, safety, facilities, operation, regulation, education or information.
Laurence P. Sharples Perpetual Award
, a county commissioner in Washoe County, Nevada, and volun-teer for AOPA’s Airport Support Network at Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is the 2011 recipient of the Laurence P. Sharples Perpetual Award. The Sharples Award is AOPA’s highest honor for individuals and is presented annually to the per-son (or persons) who has made the most significant contributions to the advancement of general aviation. Commissioner Larkin was honored for his work to ensure that general aviation would continue to have access at RNO.
The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority took action last year to reduce and limit general aviation access at RNO by failing to renew the leases of two FBOs and taking over rental of hangars there. Airport Admin-istration indicated they would operate the existing hangars for “at least one year or until new hangars were built at Reno-Stead Airport,” which the Authority also operates.
Commissioner Larkin, working closely with AOPA, assisted local pilots in organiz-ing the Reno-Tahoe Aviation Association and tutored them on how to deal with the Airport Authority, and facilitated resolutions for continued support of general avia-tion facilities at RNO by Washoe County and City of Sparks, Nev.
In addition to his work as a county commissioner and Airport Support Network volunteer, Larkin is an active flight instructor.
The Laurence P. Sharples Perpetual Award is named for AOPA’s first chairman of the board and is given each year to the person or persons who best emulates the unselfish contribution to general aviation which characterized the life of L.P. Sharples.
