AONE EVENTS CALENDAR

AONE’s spirited mid-Autumn western Massachusetts driving event returns again this year! Because the weather can be a

trifle iffy this late in the season, we keep the schedule a little loose and typically just wait for a nice Saturday or Sunday to come along. (Hence, the question mark above.) This year, we’re going to shoot for Saturday, October 31st. If that doesn’t work, it’ll run on Sunday, November 1st.

Event organizer Peter Walker will be putting together another fun frolic through the Berkshire hills that we affectionately refer to as the Indian Summer Sortie. This outing will mark the seventh successive year that we’ve run the event! Peter is promising us an-other interesting, scenic, traffic-free, twisty route through the falling

leaves of New England’s legendary foliage. Here’s the plan:

As usual, we’re go-ing to meet up at the Fill in’ Station Diner in South Deerfield, the same place we’ve started our tours in the past. Plan to be there at 10:30AM (or before, if you would

like to have breakfast there), because we’re going to shove off promptly at 11:00, and finding us will be difficult after that. From there, we’ll head out on our marvelous romp in the countryside. After perhaps a couple of hours of back-road bliss, we’ll pause for lunch.

This year, rather than dining at a restaurant at which the pay-ing customers are called “Meany-pants” by the wait staff, we’ll be stopping for lunch at Peter’s family’s lovely country home in Ashfield. Here, Meg Anderson has graciously offered to prepare us a hearty meal of soup, lasagne, and brownies that we can enjoy while taking in great views of the Berkshires. Soft drinks will be available, but feel free to bring along an alternative beverage. Afterward, we can head toward home, or Peter will be happy to suggest (and perhaps lead) some more after-lunch cruising.

MILLE MIGLIA 2010— AN ALFISTA’S

DREAM TRIPMay 10th - 18th, 2010

AONE member Tom Brooks has made the commendable effort of organizing an Alfista trip to Italy next May! Working with a

travel agency, he’s put together an 8-day tour that will have us in Brescia for the start of the Mille Miglia, will take in the Alfa Romeo,

Ferrari, Pagani, and Mille Miglia museums, and will include visits to Lake Como and Bologna, plus stops at various cheese, prosciutto, and other Italian attractions

along the way. The trip includes all hotels, some meals, and all transportation except

air fares, which are quite reasonably priced. There’s much more information on the trip (dates, list of attractions,

costs, etc.) than can be presented here, so go to www.velocissima.com/mm2010.pdf to download a printable flyer and registration form. Sign up soon — we may not get this chance again!

We’re going to make the call as to whether the Sortie runs on the 31st on the preceding Wednesday (the 28th), so watch your email inbox! At that time, we request that you contact Peter im-mediately if you’re coming, so that Meg will know how much food to prepare. Peter can be reached at [email protected] or 978-524-8102.

Everyone who’s been on one of our Sorties knows what a great time it is, and what a great way to give your Alfa a good final fling for the year. Don’t miss it!

The AONE Officers and Directors met on October 21st to do some club planning. From right to left: Brian Shorey, Gene Durso, Tom Lesko, Myron Barnett (partially hidden behind Tom), Lou Shames (completely hidden behind Myron), Peter Walker, Kevin Redden, Jim Miga (hidden behind Tom Ducibella), Tom, and Frank Maldari. Missing from the shot are Stephan de Pénasse (business in Mexico), Kevin Murphy (business in Framingham), and Dave Pratt (behind camera)

Hello all,As the Fall progresses, we Directors of AONE have been busy

planning for the future of the club. As you all know, running this club takes time — volunteer time, at that. Your club Directors are to be commended for all their efforts on behalf of the club. One of the most time- and fund-consuming tasks that the club undertakes is the production of the paper newsletter. First, it must be created — soliciting information, articles, photos, and ads; writing and editing; doing the paste-up; sending a finished product (already many hours per month invested) to the printer; picking up the 200 copies; paying the bill; and then more work begins. The 200 address labels must be printed and applied to all, along with postage, before another trip to the post office can be made.

For the past ten years, Dave Pratt has been doing this work by himself! In this digital age, it’s about time that we relieved him of some of that work. At our recent Board of Directors meeting, the Directors voted unanimously to go all-digital. This will result in having more information available, and more quickly disseminated, by using our web site (which Dave is also responsible for) and emails to get information about tours, events, and club business to our members immediately. After the December issue, we will no longer be produc-ing the paper newsletter; instead, the web site will be updated as information becomes available and emails will be sent, giving members more immediate access to information. (If we do not have your cur-rent email address, please send it to our new Membership Chairman [see below] ASAP.) Dave promises to devote much of the time he previously spent cranking out the newsletter to making our web site an even more useful resource.

As you may know, the newsletter is the single most costly element of our club’s budget. Dave Pratt is also the Treasurer and has kept our club’s coffers in great shape by making calendars, caps, shirts, mugs, pint glasses, etc. available for sale. Our club dues are paid to National AROC, but part of those fees come back to our chapter for expenses (specifically, the standard $10 plus our $5 chapter “add-on”, which still would have left us in the hole if many of you have not already been receiving the newsletter electronically). As we transition to an all-digital format, we will reduce the yearly fee that we all pay to National AROC by $5, so we see this as a win-win change. Starting in January, when you renew your AROC/AONE

membership, you’ll see that your dues have been reduced from $65 to $60. Many clubs have gone to a digital format years ago. We believe that AONE is one of the best Alfa clubs in the country, but we will have an even better club — better informed and more up-to-date — by making this change.

Additionally, at our Directors meeting, we have divided and ex-panded our club activities into the following categories, with Direc-tors signing up to be in charge of them, aided by assistants in some areas. (In business, we would call them “chairpersons,” or “chairs”, but, being a car club, perhaps we should call them “seats”?) Anyway, below are the new divisions and the Directors in charge, along with their contact information. Please feel free to contact them with any questions and suggestions, or to offer to pitch in and help!

mously to design and fund an annual award/trophy in memory of “Mr. Alfa,” Fred Di Matteo, to be presented to the most deserving member of AROC at the national convention each year. Actually, this is being done already by National; however, it was felt that our club should be responsible for it. Brian Shorey will oversee this.

That’s all for now! Please give your club Directors and especially Dave a round of applause for all the hard work and dedication they have given to make this club exist, and in so doing making it one of the best Alfa clubs in existence.

Ciao,

The view looking up the side yard of Casa di Pratt at the array of Alfa Romeos gathered for our makeshift concorso

By Dave PrattPhotos by Tom Lesko and Dave

Well, we did it again — planned an Alfa event and were graced with ideal

weather! Such was the case for the first-ever ‘Arrosto del Porco’ AONE Columbus Day Pig Roast held at Casa di Pratt on Sunday, Oc-tober 11th. It was a brilliantly clear and sunny New England fall day, with just a tad more breeze than we might have preferred. But as one attendee put it afterward, “Given the seemingly always near-perfect weather for these Alfa gatherings, one at least suspects that the responsible person up there must have been an Alfista when he/she toured the universe.”

Very early in the morning, David Roberto and his cohort Bob of Hog Wild Pig Roasts arrived with two truckloads of equipment and food, trailering a big roaster/smoker behind them. They built a fire and, as it was coming up to speed, began stuffing a 65-pound pig with chopped onions, apples, garlic, and other spices. She was tied to a spit and was turn-ing over the coals before 8AM. There were other preparations to do, but we mainly just had to wait! During that time, knowing that David was a mushroom aficionado, I mentioned that I’d spotted a large mushroom outcropping at the base of nearby tree, but I had no idea what it was. His eyes lit up and we went to look. He recognized it as a delicious variety, found two more big clumps, and later cooked them all up with onions, peppers, garlic, etc. and added it to our feast! It was delicious, disappeared fast, and everyone appeared healthy when they left.

Anyway, people started arriving between noon and 1PM — about 60 of you! I’d planned to cram as many Alfas as I could in the drive-way, but realized that wouldn’t work — there’d

By Dave PrattPhotos by Terry Rushbrook, Gene Durso, and Dave

be too many! So, on Saturday, I made a test run with my Giulietta and discovered that it was possible to drive on the dirt path behind the garage and up onto the lawn without much problem. So we directed the skeptical Alfisti along that route as they arrived and ended up with a very sizable Alfa-only car show on the grass. (The lawn has never looked better!) Here, we would spend some time roaming among the cars, while the roaster in one corner filled the air with hunger-inducing aromas.

A couple of Alfas that we didn’t send along the path and up the hill were the 1930 6C1750 Gran Sport and 1950 6C2500 Super Sport brought to the soirée by Ven and Nick Fonte. These are magnificent cars that we’ve admired at other venues such as Tutto Italiano, but it was a special treat to have them with us in such a casual, Alfa-only setting (and they occupied spots out front where they could be appreciated from the house and patio). We’re grateful to Ven and Nick for bringing them out!

At around 2PM, the pig came off the fire and the food started coming out — and it seemed like it never stopped! While David and Bob carved up the beast, they started us out with barbecued chicken, corn on the cob, baked beans, cole slaw — and those aforementioned mushrooms! They cut up the pork and pulled it, chopping it up with the onions, apples, and garlic that had been cooked inside and a little barbecue sauce — it was absolutely scrump-tious! An unexpected surprise was that all of this was elegantly served and kept warm in large chafing dishes that they had set up. Well done, Hog Wild!

Seating was at a premium with a crowd this big; some people found spots, others perched themselves on the patio wall, and still others simply munched while wandering among the Al-fas. The feast was washed down with various

types of wine, soft drinks, and a fair amount of my homebrew. Noting that we didn’t need a whole lot more to eat, we fired up the coffee urn and brought out some biscotti and other light desserts. Eventually, as the sun started getting low, assorted Alfa Romeo exhaust notes were heard springing to life and people started heading for home. Several reported taking long back-roads routes, since it was still a beautiful day and our famous fall foliage was just beginning to hit its stride.

Vi and I had a terrific time and would like to thank everyone who came for contributing to this record-setting club turnout. My only regret is that it was an AONE event to which I didn’t get to drive my Alfa!

Next year, there will be no Arrosto del Porco. Instead, there will be an Arrosto di Maiale. Which translates to ... Pig Roast! (And is pronounced approximately “a rust oh dee my alley”.) As a couple of you had pointed out, ‘maiale’ is the more proper word for pig or pork, while ‘porco’, though it does also mean ‘pig’, has a more ... derogatory connotation. I had decided to go with ‘porco’ anyway, since non-Italian speakers could read ‘Arrosto del Porco’ and understand what it meant. But, now that we’ve got one arrosto under our belts (in more ways than one), next time we’re going to get it right!

Snow falling on the Arrosto concorso lawn exactly one week later, proving the point made in the first paragraph

It’s so very British. A sort of Automotive Preservation Society. A Who’s Who and

What’s What of motorsport and everything else ‘automobilia’. Hedgerows, gardens, and twisty B roads with ancient pubs and funny names create a dreamlike backdrop to the most incredible of all automotive celebrations.

This was my second visit to the Festival of Speed, Lord March’s three-day automotive

orgy held annually at his Goodwood manor. Unlike my last visit in 2007, when I got my tan by standing in the English rain, this year was sunny and warm. I attended ‘The Sunday’, but it was not nearly enough time to take in everything ‘on offer’ (as the Brits say) at Goodwood. This event started out 15 years ago as a timed hill climb for vintage race cars, using the 1.16-mile manor driveway as the ‘hill’. It has evolved to include a rally stage through the woods, a Cartier-sponsored Concours, an air show including the British Air Force Red Arrows, an exotic supercar paddock, fairground rides, food and drink concessions (from good to don’t ask the price), and new car exhibits by leading automotive brands, including Alfa Romeo!

If the sights, and especially the sounds, of some of the most significant race cars in the world weren’t enough, then the interviews with celebrity d r i v e r s b r o a d -cast on billboard-size LCD TVs kept me in au-tomotive overload a l l day ! And the cars — did I mention the cars? — were simply in-credible. Since Audi was the honored marque (centenary), the world’s largest gathering of Silver Arrows was running up the hill, one by one, driven by Stirling Moss, Jackie Ickx, Jenson Button, and Nick Mason, among others. Jesse James was thrilling the crowd with his out-

There were lots of Alfas at Goodwood too, with two Tipo 33s and an 8C 2300 blasting up the hill. There were also concept cars — the Bertone Carabo and Navajo, both based on Alfa chassis. The new 8C Competizione in both Spyder and Coupe versions were there and sounded fabulous accelerating up the drive. The Alfa showroom gave visitors a chance to check out the new Spyder, MiTo, and 159.

Everything about the day was delightful.

Even the drive down from London was fun, driving England’s B Roads at speeds not seen in America. As we approached the festival, the cars all around us became more interesting as we caravanned along with a Triumph Spitfire, Lotus 7 and an E Type leading the way. We finished the day over a curry in one of those cozy little pubs we had spotted along the way, exhausted but exhilarated.
