ADVANTAGES OF OFFSHORE WIND

 Higher wind speed than onshore

locations : More than 20 %.

Larger area available for setting up

bigger Wind farms.

More consistent wind speeds.

Lower turbulence intensities hence

lower mechanical fatigue, longer life timelower mechanical fatigue, longer life time

for turbines.

Close to load center, Located near

cities hence minimum transmission losses.

 Short gestation period: Mega/ Ultra

mega size thermal/hydro may have

gestation period of 3-6 years where as

Offshore wind project have gestation

period of 1-2 years.

Global status of Offshore wind farm

15 GW installed at end of 2013; 135

GW by 2030.

 Increase of 31% from 2011.

Average turbine size 4-5 MW, New

turbines of 9 MW are available.

Average wind farm size 271 MW.

India : A potential hub of offshore

wind farms

India is blessed with 7600 km coastline.

 Possess rights over a Exclusive

Economic Zone(EEZ) covering area of 2

million sq. meter.

As per initial surveys conducted As per initial surveys conducted

estimated potential of few thousands of

MW; Along the cost line of

Rameshwaram & Kanyakumari in Tamil

nadu.

Also coastlines Gujarat, Kerala and

Maharashtra indicated moderate

offshore wind energy potential.

Offshore Wind Resource assessment

Wind Resource Assessment (WRA) is the

collection of technologies and analytical

methods that are used to estimate how much

wind will be available for Wind power plant for

entire course of its useful life. Determines amount of energy the Plant will produce.

Sources of WRA:

The key requirement is to reduceThe key requirement is to reduceuncertainty in estimation to increaseBankability of the project.

Following are tools used in WRA:

1. Met Mast: Consist of Anemometer and

wind vane at desired hub height.

 Most reliable onsite wind measurement.

8/1/2015 23

Page 24: Aoil wind power ppt 2015

Offshore Wind Resource assessment

2. Light Detection & Ranging (LiDER):

Operates by emitting a laser signal, either aspulses or as continuous wave, Which is partiallyscattered back in the direction of emitter bysuspended aerosol particles.

The light reflected back is shifted in frequency, which used to derive wind speed.

LiDERS are available in two types for offshoreLiDERS are available in two types for offshorepurposes

II) Fixed Type Platform:

III) Satellite Data : Additional tool

available to get wind data is Satellite

data.

QuikSCAT, MERRA, METEOSAT etc. These

data are usually 10-50m height and need

to be scaled up to turbine height. The

quality of data depend upon satellite

coverage and length of duration for which

satellite is deployed. It can also providesatellite is deployed. It can also provide

spatial variation and long term data.

IV) Mesoscale Data : Wind Resource

Grids(WRGs) are prepared by using

number of mesoscale and microscale

models along with weather data

produced by US

National Center for environmental

projection (NCEP) And National Centre for

Atmospheric research (NCAR) . MERRA

I) Data Availability and Convergence :

Studies have several gaps and remain

inconclusive.

Most databases provide spatial

variation, temporal variation is not

available.

II) Uncertainty :

Challenges to offshore potential

assessment in india

II) Uncertainty :

Accounting for sea surface roughness

and atmospheric stability is challenge.

III) Mapping of Marine resources:

Mapping of fishing/shipping channels

and marine mammal movements need

to be done determine development

Conclusion: Offshore Wind in India

Huge potential of offshore wind in

India.

Wind Data is available from differentsources but need to be validated.; byinstalling Mast & LiDER’S @ potentialoffshore locations.

The variability of all-in cost of windenergy is still major barrier for developingenergy is still major barrier for developing

Offshore wind farm.

 Total Balance-of–cost are reduced

with larger projects size.

Total Balance-of-cost are reduced

with larger Turbine size.

Water depth shows no Impact onElectrical cost. However it impactsupport structure cost.
