Thoughts from Fr. Tony

(The Ascension of the Lord Sunday) NOTE: Our Archdiocese celebrates the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord today, thus, we use the readings and prayers for Thursday, May 10, 2018, which can be found in page 94 of TODAY’S MISSAL, or in page M25 of the WORD AMONG US booklet.

“God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord,” Psalm 47.

Let’s reflect: Lord, where are you “enthroned” in my life today? Do I recognize your presence in the busyness and ordinariness of my daily activities with "shouts of joy”? Do I entrust my life to your “Lordship” with the fullness of faith and unreluctantly say “Lord, it’s not my will but thine be done”?

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension. We give special tribute to our Blessed Mother and all the mothers in the world. Of all kinds of human love, the Mother’s love is the closest to that of the Divine – it’s unconditional. In fact, defining mother’s love is difficult. It may very well make more sense to look at the “how” of a Mother’s love than to its “what”. A Mother’s love is boundless. From the moment we are formed in their wombs, there it is…gently nurturing, massaging, protecting, expanding, and strengthening with the passage of time. From the time I learned to exchange correspondence with my mother at 11 years old, to the time she could still managed to scribble short sweet notes with her feeble hands before her death, my mom never missed to close his letters with this familiar, love-filled remark: “Son, don’t forget, I am your mother always.” Maybe God created mothers so we can all get a glimpse, a closest feel, of His divine and perfect love here on earth. A very blessed and happy Mother’s Day! Indeed God says through the prophet, “Can a mother forget her child whom she has nourished from her womb? No she can’t. But even if she can, I will never forget you” (Isaiah 49). Today we also celebrate the Solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension. Whatever doubts the people of his time may have placed upon Jesus and upon the authenticity of his ministry have finally been answered when he ascended into heaven and “is seated at the right hand of his Father.” The exaltation of Jesus is expressed in different stages: resurrection, ascension and conferral of the Holy Spirit.

Of course, in our civil world, a more popular celebration is Mother’s Day. The Ascension speaks of two things: The Lord is exalted and the Lord sends us on a mission. Today, God’s own son receives a share in His sovereign rule, exalted over heavenly and earthly powers. This is our Hope and our Truth. The fact that God’s power has brought about Christ’s resurrection gives assurance to those who have been promised the same.

My take: Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.” These were my thoughts as I took part of the beautiful celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation --- the spirit giving a mission to our 98 young Confirmati with some adults.

As Christians, here our Lord is commissioning us to spread and proclaim the gospel, the “Good News”, which is no other than the “Mercy and Love” of the Father. The call of the Ascension is for us to become the very agents of that love and mercy to the world at large, through our way of life, relationships, our conduct and mental attitudes, even in the exercise of our political and social beliefs or standards; to see life and the people around us through the lenses of compassion and “Motherly love”. Jesus has made it simple and clear that accompanying our baptism, our salvation hinges on whether or not we accept his Mercy and Love and by doing so be willing to become that Mercy and Love ourselves to others.

“May the eyes of my heart be enlightened, O Lord, that I may shout with joy as you mount your throne in my life!”

MISSION STATEMENT

Today we celebrate Christ's ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mis-sion in the world. First we hear Luke's description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark's account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus' name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ--a mission state-ment of sorts. Like mission statements in our parishes and corporations, this mission statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ's messianic mission on earth.

ENCOUNTER WITH OUR FAITH Let us journey in understanding, embracing and living the Four Pillars of our Catholic Faith, day by day. Beginning the week of June 3-9, we invite you to sign up and participate in a group Encounter with our Faith. Cards will be distributed at all Masses and available in the Church vestibule soon.

CONFIRMATION 2018—-WELCOME HOME

Please join us as we congratulate our newly confirmed youth and adults. As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension, we are taken back to our mass last Tuesday where we, as one community, proclaimed "Your right hand saves me, O Lord." During the Ascension, Jesus is resurrected and is seated at the right hand of the Father. With the gifts of the Holy Spirit filling them, let us keep our newly confirmed in our prayers, that they continue to live their faith out loud and be consumed by God's mercy and love.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) prepares adults to receive one or more of the Sacraments of Initiation. The Sacraments of Initiation are: Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist [Communion]. RCIA also prepares adults to be received into the Catholic Church if they have been baptized in another Christian church. If a person was baptized as a Catholic but never received First Eucharist and Confirmation, they can also be a part of the RCIA. The RCIA meets every Sunday at St. Lorenzo Ruiz Church for the 10:30 am liturgical service (the Mass). Normally we stay for the readings and the homily (sermon) by the priest. After the homily, the priest will call forward all individuals who are in the process of learning about Catholicism and/or preparing to receive one or more of the Sacraments of Initiation. He also invites to come forward the sponsors and/or people who are supporting the individuals who are in the RCIA. The priest gives a blessing to those called forward. The priest will then call forward the catechists/facilitators who will then lead the group to the meeting room. In our meeting room, we discuss the readings which were read in church, see how they apply to the teachings of the church, and what differences the readings make in living our lives as Christians. We invite questions and participation by all those who attend the RCIA. We usually take a short break for hospitality around 11:30 and then re-assembly for more discussion and instruction. We try to conclude by 12:30 or 12:45. The RCIA process is open-ended in that people begin at whatever time they want, and they stay in the process until they decide what they want to do about receiving sacraments. The usual time we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation for adults (and for older children) is during the Easter season. We meet every Sunday throughout the year, unless some major celebration, such as Easter or Christmas, falls on as Sunday and it takes precedence. We are also looking for people in the parish to be involved in the RCIA process by being parish sponsors. These individuals would be sources of support for the persons going through the RCIA. They would attend the RCIA sessions and be available to talk with the participants both in the RCIA sessions and also outside of the sessions. If you have any further questions, please contact Bob Kondrath at the parish office (909) 959-9545 or by email [email protected].

“Imagine all the people living a life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” John Lennon I would like to thank everyone who participated in the creation of my Gold Award project, The Wall of Peace, at St. Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic Church. The Wall of Peace is a mural wall that contains over 160 tiles, individually made by our mostly young parishioners. On each tile is an individual’s image of peace. The Wall of Peace has multiple goals--to spread awareness, share the community’s talents and as well as beautify the area. This project was aimed towards the younger generation because the children are the future. Starting to understand the problems in the world and making an effort to change it at a young age will heavily impact the future for the better. I feel that it’s important that we don’t hide the reality of society from the kids because they will be the ones to make a greater change. Throughout the process of my project, I’ve learned numerous things about myself, my community, and the world around me. The outcome of my Gold Award was phenomenal. The Wall of Peace came out beautiful and made a huge impact on myself, the participants and the church. When those who participated approach the wall, they hold a smile on their face and get excited to show the people around them which tile is theirs. I am grateful to all who have been by my side throughout the process. May peace prosper among all of us. Sara Santos

Sara has been an active volunteer at SLR since she was 7 yrs old attending Rel Ed program, Children’s Choir then as an Altar Server until her Sophomore year. She is also an active member of SLYM and is an aide for the Confirmation Program.

The Wall of Peace is located by the classrooms also known as the Evangelization Center, facing the Pavil-ion. Special thanks to Fr. Tony, Cara, Bong, Mayette and Mong for their support in this project.
