WOGA has had a wonderful year in 2011. Let’s recap WOGA’s successes from this past year. Membership increased 60%, we now have 500 members including our Junior Members. Tournament participation was up, with three of our six tournaments at capacity. Although they are small in number, our dedicated course rating teams rated more courses (21) this year than in recent memory. WOGA’s new website debuted in April and 70% of our tournament entries were registered through the new online entry system. Pat McKamey, assisted by Sheila Dills and Rose Whatley, conducted Rules Clinics which were well attended and very well received. Brunches were held in Tulsa and OKC for the first time to connect with local WGA representatives and to exchange ideas regarding the state of women’s and junior girls’ golf in Oklahoma. Our tournament players had a schedule featuring old favorites and two first-time venues, Gaillardia CC and Belmar Golf Club. If that isn’t enough excitement for you than how about this, FIVE 2010 champions successfully defended their titles in 2011 and our Fore State team won a record seventh championship! WOW, it really has been an exciting year to be associated with WOGA.

But we can’t rest on our laurels (or anything else)! There is more work to be done to keep WOGA the vibrant organization that it is. Goals for 2012 include obtaining 501c3 status so that WOGA can accept tax-deductible donations; increasing membership to 650; conducting seven tournaments; conducting rules clinics; and continue to update course ratings.

None of the successes of this year would have happened without all of you: from Senior Women to Junior Girls, from scratch golfers to high handicap golfers, and everyone in between. WOGA needs all of you, whether you play in tournaments, volunteer or do both. It takes a lot of oars to keep this boat afloat. Please contact me to man one of the oars in the WOGA boat.

We all need to thank Susan Hall who has gone above and beyond to help WOGA. Susan has spent the last six years as an officer and most of those years as Tournament Chair. WOGA is lucky to have Susan continue on as a Director. Now there is an oarsman for you!

Happy Holidays!

Indian Springs CC wins Inaugural WOGA Cup in a playoff!

The Inaugural WOGA Cup Club Team Championship was held at Oakwood Country Club in Enid on May 16-17. Nineteen teams from clubs across the state competed for the opportunity to take The Cup back to their club. Each team was four women who were members of the same club. After three rounds of match play, two teams were tied for first with 9 1⁄2 points out of a possible 14 points. The two teams competed in an alternate shot sudden victory playoff. The team from Indian Springs CC prevailed when Teresa DeLarzelere knocked one close on the first hole. The team from Quail Springs CC was runner-up.

Oakwood CC was selected as the site for the Inaugural WOGA Cup because it was the home club of long-time WOGA member, Carol Collins. Sheila Dills gave a touching tribute to Carol at the awards luncheon. Carol’s son, David, presented the WOGA Cup to the winning team from Indian Springs CC. The WOGA Cup will reside at Indian Springs CC until next October, when it will be up for grabs again at Stillwater CC. Get your team organized and make a run for The Cup in 2012!

WOGA Senior Moments C/O Becky Masoner, Newsletter Editor:During the WOGA Senior Championship this year at Belmar Country Club I had the honor of interviewing some of our Masters Class participants for WOGA’s article in “Golf Oklahoma Magazine, Oct/Nov issue”. I asked several questions, how long have you played golf, personal golf experiences, etc. Some answered they took up the game late, early, or on the advice of friends, etc. I will try and post some of their comments in future publications. First one to tee up! Lorene West of Muskogee Country Club took up the game at 47 and is a 25 year WOGA Senior Championship participant. She was introduced to the game by her bowling friends. She shared one of her funny golf stories. “The first time I went golfing and it was the first time to ever have a club in my hand, my friends made me count all 15 strokes on one of the holes. Before I hit the next ball they said, “We can’t beat you bowling but we got you at golf.” Lorene’s remark to them was yes! but not for long! She said, “they were a great bunch of girls.”

The Championship has changed significantly since the inaugural event in 1995 with the Championship becoming more popular and competitive. College and Junior players now dominate the field. I recently spoke with Dena Nowotny who attended the first meeting held in 1994 that Ed Dell Wortz, the Fore State founder organized. According to Dena, Ed Dells vision was for the very best players in each state to participate in Fore State whether they were junior, college, Mid-Am or Senior. She said Fore State was not intended for just the Mid-Ams. A couple of our Mid-Ams in Oklahoma have expressed resentment because the College players have become more interested in Fore State making it more competitive, but according to Dena, it was not Ed Dells vision for the Championship to ultimately be a Mid-Am Fore State.

Less than 24 hours before the Practice Round, our State Amateur Champion withdrew due to injury. The Oklahoma Girls’ Junior Runner-up, Charter Lawson, took her place. Charter was one of our most successful players for Oklahoma at Fore State and very influential in our success. The experience she gained was invaluable, particularly since she had never competed in a match play event.

The 2012 Fore State is set for July 30 and 31 with a practice round on July 29 at the Highlands CC in Hutchinson Kansas.

Fore State News

2011 FORE STATE REPORTby Sheila Dills, Captain

Fore State was a great success this year with Team Oklahoma winning over Missouri at Hardscrabble CC in Fort Smith, Arkansas August 2-4. Oklahoma brought home the cup for the 7th time in the 17-year history of the Championship. Final results were Oklahoma 12, Missouri, 10 1⁄2, Kansas 9 1⁄2, Arkansas 8. Oklahoma has now won more Championships than any other state. The Oklahoma team consisted of Ellen Mueller, Chrissy Bagwell, Kathy West, Sydney Tallon, Kendra Mann, Charter Lawson, Ashton Collier, Leigh Ann Fore, Jade Staggs and Aubree Vaughan. Pat McKamey was our Rules Official and Susan Hall helped with ice chest duty, money collection for guests and starting the players each day. With families attending, we had approximately 20 people in the Oklahoma party and Of the 7 Mid-Amateur players in the 40-player field, 3 came from Oklahoma.

“This team was very special, they played their hearts out until the last putt dropped and they never stopped believing in themselves and in each other,” noted Sheila Dills, Fore State Captain for Oklahoma.

RULESUSGA ANNOUNCES REVISIONS TO THE RULES OF GOLF FOR 2012

After their quadrennial review, the USGA and the R & A have introduced the following principal changes to the Rules of Golf, which become effective January 1, 2012:

Addressing the Ball The Definition is amended so that a player has addressed the ball simply by grounding her club immediately in front of or behind the ball, regardless of whether or not she has taken her stance. Therefore, it will no longer be possible to “address the ball” in a hazard. [The previous Definition stated” the a player has addressed the ball when he has taken his stance and has also grounded his club, except that in a hazard a player has addressed the ball when he has taken his stance”.]

Time of Starting (Rule 6-3a) This Rule is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within five minutes of the starting time, is reduced from disqualification to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play. [Previously, this penalty reduction could only be introduced as a condition of the competition.]

Seeing Ball; Searching for Ball (Rule 12-1) Rule is amended to

(1) permit a player to search for her ball anywhere on the course when it may be covered by sand and to clarify that there is no penalty if the ball is moved in these circumstances, and

(2) apply a penalty of one stroke if a player moves her ball in a hazard when searching for it when it is believed to be covered by loose impediments.

Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions (Rule 13-4) Exception 2 to this Rule is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and nothing is done that would improve the lie, area of intended stance or swing, or line of play for the player’s next shot.

Ball Moving After Address (Rule 18-2b) A new Exception is added that exonerates the player from penalty if her ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that she did not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves that ball after is has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position.

Appendix IV A new Appendix is added to prescribe general regulations for the design of devices and other equipment, such as tees, gloves, and distance measuring devices.

WOGA is planning two mini-clinics in the spring - one in Tulsa & one in the OKC/Norman area –to discuss the changes, review common relief procedures, and answer questions about the Rules of Golf. These clinics will be open to all golfers & will include a morning indoor session, lunch, & an afternoon on-course session. Be sure to watch for announcement of place, date, time & cost (for lunch) on the WOGA website and by e-mail. Come and bring your golfing friends!

USGA STATE TEAM REPORTBy Sheila Dills, Captain

The 2011 USGA State Team Championship was held at the Landings Palmetto Course in Savannah, Georgia October 4-6, 2011. Ellen Mueller, Kathy West and Leigh Ann Fore represented Oklahoma. The Oklahoma team put together a 17th place finish over the 3 day stroke play event giving Oklahoma it’s highest finish in the Championship history. Oklahoma was in 10th place after the second day. Even though college players are not eligible for this Championship due to NCAA Rules, many teams were represented with young junior golfers including the winning team from Georgia that had a 14 year old and 17 year old on their winning team. Hawaii, a top ten finisher, had an average age of 14.5 years on their team. “This team really bonded and they drew on the strength of the team,” said Sheila Dills, captain of the Oklahoma team. “They really made us proud.”

ATTENTION WOGA MEMBERS! The Hall of Fame board of directors is pleased to announce the individuals to be honored at the Women’s Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame banquet Sunday evening, April 29, 2012, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. They are: Lucy Beeler, Oklahoma City, a past WOGA Amateur Champion and multiple winner of the WOGA Senior Championship; Lee Ann Hammack Fairlie, Oklahoma City, a former OU golfer who has five WOGA Amateur Championships; U. C. Ferguson, (deceased), a former golf professional at Lincoln Park Golf Club, and respected teacher and promoter of many women golfers in our state; and Jeannie Thompson Rogers, formerly of Tulsa, now living in Alabama, a past WOGA Amateur Champion and three-time WOGA Girls’Junior champion.

The Hall of Fame board of directors is excited for you to meet these outstanding individuals, their families and to hear their stories. They have been pioneers in women’s golf and have promoted the game in significant ways. Look for your invitation to this gala event in the mail this March and make plans with your friends to be there!

A special thanks to the many sponsors and participants at the Hall of Fame Classic held at the beautiful Patriot Golf Club in May, 2011. The event was a huge success despite the rainy weather (didn’t hurt to have Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood bring two teams). With your help and theirs, we were able to make a donation to the WOGA Girls’ Junior Championship hosted in July 2011 at the Oaks Country Club and have some funds left over for the 2012 Hall of Fame Banquet.

Also, Patty Coatney directed the first Women Teaching Women fundraiser for the Hall of Fame. It was held at Stillwater Country Club in early April. Jackie Riggs Hutchinson, Stephanie Brecht, Janice Gibson, Amy Weeks and Annie Thurman Young donated their time to the event which had a waiting list. We are planning another Women Teaching Women clinic in early April, 2012.

Since we are starting our fundraising for our 2012 Hall of Fame banquet, I have attached a donor card for your convenience. We are grateful for any and all donations. It is our hope to keep the banquet ticket price at $50 again this year. Just ask those who have been there, it is well worth the money. Hope to see you on April 29, 2012.
