“The Rosette” Newsletter of the Tennessee Society Order of Confederate Rose ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Summer Edition July 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the President’s Desk Dear Members and Friends, Wow! That sums it up this summer kicked off in high gear! April commenced with the Tennessee State Convention. We greatly appreciate the Chattanooga SCV providing us a room for the officer’s meeting Friday night and the Saturday general meeting. Please express your thanks whenever you get a chance to these fine Southern brothers. There are pictures from the convention farther along in this newsletter. At the convention several projects were approved to financially support this year. One of these was the Gaines House, a home turned WBTS hospital, restoration and preservation project in Gainesboro, a check for $1000 was presented to Ed Butler president of the association to aide in that project. A check for $500 was presented to Stephen Parker, Cmdr. of the Capt. Champ Ferguson SCV Camp #2014 in Monterey to aide in keeping those beautiful Southern flags flying over I-40 just west of the Monterey exit. A program was approved to send a deserving Tenn. teen to the Sam Davis Youth Camp, the rules are being drawn up by Jan Hensley, who will administer this scholarship. Nathan Bedford Forrest Boyhood Home fundraiser in June was a wonderful time of fun and fellowship Gene Andrews keeps improving the home and event and I truly don’t see how it could get much better he’s done a fabulous work out there. Please members next year I hope everyone who attends will be willing to devote at least one hour to helping, Debbie Raymer is always busy in the kitchen all day, and Jan and I were the only ones who agreed to work the gate and then followed through on the commitment. I hope many more will help next year just for a short time. During the busy morning at the NBF Home we chartered the newest Tennessee OCR Chapter - #19 Alice Thompson, named in honor of a heroic teen who rallied the troops at Thompson Station. Traci Dickson is the first president of the chapter (I have a real hard time spelling her name right LOL). They chartered with 3 Roses, 5 Thorns, and 1 Rosebud. These ladies even had t-shirts especially made for their chartering! We welcome all the new members of #19 proud and grateful always to add new sisters and brothers to our Southern family. In Humble Service to the South, Vonda Dixon, president, TNSOCR 1 I thank you with all my heart for the many wonderful gifts, I will always remember and feel honored. I hope never to let you down. Jane Simmons Davis Chapter #6, Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Sponsored by Murfreesboro SCV Camp #33

Finally! My favorite season is here…..summertime!! Chapter #6 had a very busy spring and looks to be a

very busy summer. In April my chapter attended its first state reunion, we had a total of 7 ladies in

attendance. We had a great time, met some wonderful women and got some cool stuff! Some of us also

enjoyed a wonderful tour of Tunnel Hill. In May we helped Camp 33 with the Secession Ball, there were

about 40 in attendance. We all enjoyed great music, food, dancing and fellowship. We had 2 very special

guests from Scotland, Bill & Alison Brown. Bill is an honoree member of camp 33 and before the ball we

surprised Alison by making her an honoree member of the chapter. The chapter continues to work with

camp 33 on their Sam Davis Home project. In May we had a clean-up day where some of the ladies of the

chapter weeded flower beds, raked the cemetery and cleaned the headstones. In June at camp 33’s

Confederate Memorial Day @ Confederate Circle we had cookies and lemonade for all in attendance. We

shared a booth with camp 33 at the Eagleville Tractor Pull we had an excellent night, for some of the ladies

it was their first good ole boys tractor & truck pull. We also shared a booth and helped the guys at Forrest

Homecoming. I had 5 ladies and 2 rosebuds that came to help and again for many of them it was their first

Homecoming. We sold sweet tea and our wares again it was a great day of fun and confederate fellowship!

As most of you know we lost a very special young man on June 2nd. He was the husband of Callie Patterson Talbert, father to beautiful 2 year old daughter Lily Talbert, James & Melanie Patterson’s son-in-law, a member of camp 33, a thorn in my chapter, a sweet young man that I will miss and never forget. Most of you did not have the pleasure of knowing Danny Talbert but if by chance you only met him once that gleaming sweet smile and his kind eyes will stay with you forever. God truly does have a special angel now. Please continue to pray for peace, understanding and healing for his family.

Danny Talbert

But some are sent among us briefly For 'Some have Spirits meant to fly'

Cabin on the Chickamauga Battlefield Tour And some OCR ladies at the SCV banquet that evening

This convention carried on the tradition of fun, history, food, and fellowship! Getting

together is always fun and these conventions are the only time each year some of us get

to see each other. This year on Friday afternoon Steve Hall (Ga. SCV) gave us a tour of

the museum and the Western & Atlantic RR tunnel in Tunnel Hill, Ga. prior to the OCR

president’s meeting. The Sat. morning general meeting was hosted by Aunt Polly #10,

and the meeting opened with greeting from Lisa Swann who accepted the position of

State Chaplain. Clara Ingram-Craft, the newest Keeper of the Rite in Tenn., lit the

candle in memory of lost loved ones, and Confederate soldiers. Please forward new

apps to her to join this wonderful sub-group of OCR as a lady in mourning. A

wonderful program by Ross Hudgins about life in occupied Nashville was presented in

the form of “Maggie’s Diary”. Door prizes were drawn with Rosebud Rachel’s help.

The drawing for the tea cups was won by Aunt Polly Chapter. After the meeting, SCV

luncheon, and tour of Chickamauga Battlefield, the finale was the SCV awards banquet

that many of us attended.

Hope to see some of you in Vicksburg in July for the national convention!

During the EC meeting we voted to send financial support to some worthy

organizations promoting the South. The pix below taken 11 May show some of these

gifts being presented.

Carolyn Hedgecoth and Vonda Dixon presented $1000 presented to the Gaines House Association

an OCR check for $500 to Camp #2014’s Cmdr. officers: Pres. Ed Butler, Vice Pres. Mike Williams,

Parker to help in their flag project during the and Secretary Lisa Swann at the GHA booth during

Monument dedication at the flagpole in Monterey. the Poke Sallet Festival.

Both groups were very grateful for the TNSOCR donations.

Highland Roses - Chapter #14

Sponsored by the Dillard-Judd SCV Camp, Cookeville Time certainly melts away quickly during this time of the year.

Highland Roses #14 welcomes the following new members: Mary Jessica

Barnes Workman, William Workman, Young Rebel Sonic Workman, Jennifer

Butler, James Butler, Debbie Smith, and Marty Smith. All of us are

looking forward to the Brigade Picnic July 13, 2013, at Michael

Williams. It will be a fun time with delightful fellowship. On the

heels of the picnic is the National Reunion in Vicksburg, Mississippi on

July 18 through July 20. It will be a time to wear our new Order of

Confederate Rose pins presented at the Tennessee State Reunion by Vonda.

Thanks you for your efforts. The pins are perfect. Look forward to

seeing all of you in Vicksburg.

Chapters #1 and #14 provided refreshments for the Confederate Memorial Day Service in Cookeville.

OCR Poem by Pat Butler

OCR , what can that be? It's a group that helps the SCV. It stands for Order of Confederate Rose; But fellas can join----that's how it goes. They assist in every way that they can As an historical, educational, social and benevolent fan. To preserve their ancestral history in every way, As a reminder of the sacrifices made in that day. Another special emphases is always placed, On Confederate symbols not to be erased. Our country continues to wipe from its face Historical items that created this U.S. space. OCR's goal to aid and further the cause Began in 1993 with Confederation by-laws. With the desire to organize with one purpose in mind, To help the SCV in any way they could find!

Roses of the Cumberlands #1, Crossville Greetings from the Cumberland Plateau where everything is lush and green from an abundance of rain.

Our chapter members came through like champs with contributions for "Citizens To Save Our Parks". We do hope the

case is won and the Memphis parks will retain their original names.

On April 20 Jerry and I attended memorial services for Robert Shoemake's ancestors, the Confederate Coffee brothers.

I attended the 2013 TNSOCR Reunion in Ringgold, GA on April 26-27 and prepared/provided refreshments for the

Friday afternoon executive committee meeting. At the general meeting on Saturday, in appreciation for her dedication

and service, Vonda was presented with a gift basket of "goodies" which included a framed and matted print of Helen

Holladay's "A Letter Home" painting. Our chapter also gave ditty bag items and donated door prizes for the reunion.

Betty Lu and Leif Bendeke, Jerry and I attended the Confederate Monument and Flag Dedication Ceremony in Monterey

on May 11. In addition, on June 2 the four of us attended the Confederate Memorial Service at Cookeville City

Cemetery. In cooperation with the Highland Roses #14, we provided refreshments which were served underneath the

shade trees following the service.

A lawyer in New York, Robert E. Dunphy, Esq., and friend of TNSOCR sent a contribution to us along with an informative

letter and historical information about POW's at Elmira with a list of the Tennesseans held there. I will be bringing copies to the brigade picnic and will be glad to share the list with everyone who would like a copy.

Respectfully submitted,

Carolyn Hedgecoth, President

Cynthia Holford Officer Chapter #18 has been very busy during Confederate History

Month in April. In addition to our proclamation signed by the Overton County Executive (and SCV

member) Ron Cyrus that now hangs in the Court House annex naming April Confederate History month in

Overton County, Karen Hensley and I donated children’s books to the Millard Oakley Library in

Livingston, and on April 20 Carlotta Eland, Larry Gunnels and I attended two memorials in Monroe for

Confederate veterans who are ancestors of Robert Shoemake of the G.G. Dibrell Sons of Confederate

Veterans camp that sponsors us. I also attended the TN State Reunion/OCR Convention in Ringgold, GA

April 26-28. As always, it was great to socialize with all our OCR sisters especially ones from Chapters in

far off parts of the State.

On May 7, Lisa Swann and I gave a presentation on the origination of Memorial Day as Confederate

Decoration Day to the Livingston American Legion Post #4. Larry Gunnels, Commander of the post and

OCR Thorn, invited us to speak and we handed out flyers and a poem about Decoration Day to the

attending members. At the Poke Sallet Festival in Gainesboro on May 11, Carlotta Eland, Larry Gunnels

and I attended the festivities and represented our chapter along with Aunt Polly's chapter and

Gainesboro Invincibles. That night, along with Vonda, Lisa, and other members of Aunt Polly's and the

Highland Brigade, I had a wonderful time at the ball given by Murfreesboro #33 and invited by Jane

Simmons Davis Chapter #6 in Eagleville. Later on May 25, Carlotta Eland and I attended Granville

Heritage Festival and helped with the recruitment table manned by Aunt Polly's chapter. We ended the

month by participating in the Memorial Day festivities on the square in Livingston, where Vonda and Lisa

helped hand out more of our flyers on Confederate Decoration Day to the crowd in attendance, Larry

Gunnels was the master of ceremonies as American Legion Commander, and I took photos for the local

paper "behind the scenes."

On June 2nd, Carlotta Eland, Sue Pope, Louise Stover, Betty Mullins and I were in attendance at the

memorial given by the Highland Brigade at Cookeville City Cemetery to honor local Confederate veterans

buried there on Confederate Memorial Day. Aunt Polly Thorn, Mark Hudson gave a wonderful speech and

the cannon fired a volley that scared one local motorist who thought he was under attack! We enjoyed a

lovely reception afterwards given by the Roses of the Cumberland Chapter #1 and Highland Roses #14. I

attended the chartering of our newest OCR chapter at Forrest Home on June 15 and enjoyed seeing

many of the ladies from our other chapters also in attendance. On June 25, Sue Pope and Louise Stover,

along with Lisa Swann, participated in a Living History at Pickett State Park that had been arranged by

our Thorn, Larry Gunnels, Commander of Gainesboro Invincibles. The month ended by my attending the

Gettysburg Reenactment in Gettysburg, PA as well as touring the Stonewall Jackson Home, VMI, and Lee

Chapel at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA, visiting the home where John Brown planned his

takeover of the armory in Harpers Ferry and then visiting that armory in Harpers Ferry as well as

touring Antietam Battlefield in Sharpsburg, MD before returning home. It was a great time to be

Southern and Confederate! God bless Dixie and God save the South!
