Community CentreConstruction to Start this Month

I am excited to share that the contract to build the 75,000-square foot community centre on Ninth Line in Churchill Meadows has been awarded and construction is set to begin this month. The winning firm is Aquicon, the same company that built the newly renovated Meadowvale Community Centre at 6655 Glen Erin Drive. There was a slight delay in awarding the con-tract because the bids from all four pre-qualified firms were higher than budgeted mostly due to a high supply of large-scale construction projects currently in the market and limited number of firms capable of doing the work. Staff managed to find $4.5 million in savings and Council approved an ad-ditional $2.75 million to the now $51 million budget to build the facility and phase 1 of the sports park. The website dedicated to the construction of the centre is being launched this month. The web address is www.mississauga.ca/churchillmeadows and is expected to go live by Monday, June 11. You can also follow the progress on my website at www.mississaugaward10.ca/community-centre

Report on Ninth Line OPA

A city planning staff report recommending approval of the City’s Official Plan Amendment for Ninth Line is coming to Planning and Development Committee on June 18. To stay informed on this topic, please visit my website: www.mississaugaward10.ca/ninth-line or the City’s dedi-cated page: www.mississauga.ca/ninthline.

Pump Design on Display at PIC

Together with City staff in Transportation and Works, I am hosting a Public Information Centre to invite the public to view the plans for the Utility Trench Dewatering System and Permanent Pump System as part of the flood mitiga-tion efforts along the Sixteen Mile Creek. The open house style session will be held on Thursday, June 14 from 7-9 pm at the Garry Morden Fire Training Centre, 7535 Ninth Line. Drop by any time. I hope to see you there.

Celebrating our Trails

The reconstruction of several trails in Ward 10 is be-ing completed this month with the last stretch of the Lisgar Meadowbrook Trail from Osprey Boulevard to Doug Leavens Boulevard expected to be done by mid-June. The rehabilitation includes widening to the new standard of 3 metres where possible and repaving. Trails that were recently reconstructed include: Avon-lea Park, Stonewood Park, Lisgar Meadowbrook Trail, O’Harra Trail and, just last month, Lisgar Green Park. To celebrate and mark the completion of these capital upgrades, as well as the return of permanent soccer goals to Lisgar Green Park, I am inviting resi-dents to a neighbourhood party with ice cream and fun soccer drills led by the semi-professional play-ers from North Mississauga Soccer Club. I hope you can join me!• Saturday, June 16, – 3 to 5 pm• Lisgar Green Park Osprey Blvd/Grossbeak Dr

Pedestrian Crossing Pilot Project

As part of the 2018 Budget, Council approved the addition of the Pedestrian Crossover Pilot Project to evaluate this new traffic control device. Under this pilot program, Transportation and Works staff intend to implement pedestrian crossovers at five different loca-tions throughout the City to improve safety. Staff reviewed more than 20 locations where ad-ditional pedestrian crossing assistance was requested by the public. The review of these locations included the level of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, the posted speed limit, the surrounding traffic control and the sight line visibility at the proposed crossing location. I am pleased to share that Doug Leavens Blvd has been selected as one of the five locations for this pilot. The proposed pedestrian crossover is located at a natu-ral pedestrian crossing point on Doug Leavens Boule-vard at the Lisgar Meadow Brook Greenbelt. The recorded vehicle volumes and crossing distance warrants the installation of a Type B Pedestrian Cross-over. This type of crossover includes pavement mark-ings, roadside signs, overhead signs and rectangular rapid flashing beacons. A report on this pilot is coming to Council later this month. Once approved, installation of the signage will follow later in the year.

Ticks and Lyme Disease

There has been an increase in the tick population in Mississauga this spring but, thankfully, indications so far are that they are not the disease-carrying kind. The Region of Peel Public Health Department takes the lead on monitoring of insects that carry diseases (i.e. West Nile/mosquitos, Lyme disease/ticks). Peel Health indicates that there is not an established Black-legged tick population in Mississauga (the species that carries Lyme disease). The majority of ticks found in Mississauga are Dog ticks, which do not transmit Lyme disease. Ticks found can be taken to Access Peel for testing and iden-tification (7120 Hurontario St, Mississauga). Due to the challenges of controlling the tick population, prevention is the best tool: • Stay on park paths.• If you go into a natural area, check for ticks when you leave.• Wear light clothing and tuck pants into your socks when in a natural area (tall grass area or wooded area).• Use insect repellents. • Shower shortly after being outdoors.

Play in the Park at Lisgar Fields

Play in the Park returns this summer across city, with the Ward 10 location once again being held at Lisgar Fields Community Park, 6745 Lisgar Drive. Play in the Park is a complimen-tary half-day, drop-in program for kids aged 6 to 12 to enjoy some supervised play on weekdays throughout the summer. It runs from 1 to 4 pm near the splash pad. The program also runs at Union Park (Tenth Line and Aquitaine in neighbouring Ward 9) in the mornings from 9 am to noon. Find out more: www.mississauga.ca/playinthepark

New Tech for Growing Trees

You may have noticed green bags placed at the base of some City owned trees in your neighbourhood. These bags were installed by Forestry staff to help in the watering and growth of some of our younger boulevard trees. The bags have small holes at the base and it takes between 5 to 9 hours for the bag to empty completely. This slow release ensures that the water penetrates deeply into the soil and is delivered to the roots as opposed to running off into the turf. Residents are not required to fill the bags as contractors will attend each location throughout the summer to fill them up. The number of fills depends on the amount of rain we get this summer.

Many Feathers’ “Mini Feathers”

Do you know a young ‘green thumb’ interested in learn-ing more about gardening, farming and local food? Be sure to tell them about Many Feather’s junior gardeners program. Also known as Mini Feathers, this program aims to introduce gardening, farming and sustainability to children aged 4-12 to enhance learning outside of the conventional classroom. Every Saturday, from June 2nd to August 25th (except for long weekends), Mini Feathers will meet outdoors at one of our three community gardens to learn about growing our own food and gardening. Each week, we will tackle a different topic followed by a craft activity that the children can take home. Find out more: http://www.manyfeathers.ca/about-the-junior-gardeners-club/

SLOW RELEASE

Forestry staff are working with a contractor to apply water to young, city-owned trees to help them grow during the dry summer months. Residents do not need to fill these bags.

Dementia Care Butterfly Care Model

Regional Council passed a resolution approving the implementation of the Dementia Butterfly Care Model in dedicated units for people living in the advanced stages of dementia across all five Peel Long Term Care centres. The Butterfly Care Model is a nationally accredited culture change model that strives to make living envi-ronments for people living in the advanced stages of dementia enriching, engaging and more home-like. The Model emphasizes a transformation in the way people living with dementia are cared for, with a focus on their emotions and the creation of home-like environments and everyday activities they enjoyed earlier in life. The Region of Peel is the first long term care pro-vider in Ontario to begin the journey of transitioning one unit at the Malton Village Long Term Care centre into a Butterfly home. The one-year pilot at Malton Village has delivered significant improvements in qual-ity indicators for care and experience, such as higher levels of engagement, lower levels of worsened depres-sion and lower levels of antipsychotic medication use without a diagnosis for psychosis for people living in the Butterfly Home. Regional Council heard from family members of residents about the positive impact the Butterfly Model has had on their loved ones. Regional Council also heard from Dr. David Sheard, Chief Executive Officer, Dementia Care Matters, who advised that Malton Village’s Butterfly home is a remark-able achievement and a testament to the leadership, staff and families who have changed their belief system about dementia care. Dementia Care Matters will be presenting the But-terfly Model of Care to senior provincial health care leaders to promote its importance to the future of long term care. For more information on the Butterfly Home project at Malton Village, please visit: http://www.peelregion.ca/ltc/butterfly-home/

Thanks, Crossing Guards!

Do you know the name of your child’s school crossing guard? He or she is an integral part of creating a safer environment for your child during what is often a cha-otic situation at the start and end of each school day. June 12 is Crossing Guard Appreciation Day… a friendly ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ would be most welcome by these faithful dedicated members of our community. Crossing guards work split shifts on the hottest days, the coldest days, and the wettest days, all for student safety. They put their lives in harm’s way, dealing with motorists who are sometimes too busy, distracted or self-centred to obey the rules of the road. Some have even been the recipients of verbal abuse when they try to enforce those rules. Mississauga employs 202 crossing guards who work tirelessly every day on streets in and near school zones across the city. Some of them have been doing this for more than 40 years!! Our thanks to all of you for everything you do to keep our kids safe!
