“Sharing God’s Love with Coffey County and the A Message...
Transcript of “Sharing God’s Love with Coffey County and the A Message...
These days, when I go out to eat fast food, I see a family or
friends gathered to eat. People don’t talk as much as we used to
while we are eating. Rather, we talk on our cell phone, send text
messages, or log onto Facebook to visit old friends from high
school or college. We miss having connecting relationships,
talking face to face, especially when we share a meal.
It’s amazing how many people we come in contact with in our life
journey. Out of hundreds, thousands of people that I have met over my 60 years of
life, I probably had a chance to talk to them in a very limited time on a regular
basis. I cherish every conversation, the meals we shared together, the tears we
shed together, and the prayers we lifted up to God together. It would be
awesome to have a reunion with all the people that I have known. I know it won’t
happen here. But I know it will happen in heaven. Those with whom I have con-
tact will be in heaven when I get there. Sound moody, don’t I?
I was sitting at the hotel lounge early in the morning, January 15, 2014 in
Kansas City, having breakfast, looking outside at cars passing on highway 435. I
have no idea how long I was watching cars passing, thinking “that red car driver
must be in a hurry to go to work, that yellow car driver must be in a hurry to take
his dad to KU medical center, that white car must be in a hurry to go to bed
because he was on the night shift, that blue car must be in a hurry to catch the
plane to visit her mom” . . . Then I was thinking, “That red car driver, the yellow,
the white, the blue—if something terrible thing happens they may not make it
home tonight.” Sound moody, don’t I?
I couldn’t eat. Instead, I started praying for the red, the yellow, the white, the blue . . . It must be the
weather. Kansas windy weather makes me feel moody. I hear you saying “Something is wrong with Moon-
Hee.” Don’t worry, I am doing fine. What I am trying to say is this: COME TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY.
Yes, it’s good to talk on our cell
phone, text messages, or Facebook, but on
Sunday, just on Sunday, COME TO
CHURCH. I know we will all see each
other in heaven but until we get there, let’s
see each other in Burlington United
Methodist Church.
Are you also feeling moody?
See you Sunday. Let us share cheer
together in God’s house.
Grace and peace,
Moon-Hee Chung

SHARING GOD’S LOVE This section is devoted to sharing examples of our congregation acting
on our mission of “Sharing God’s Love with Coffey County and the World.” If
you want to recognize someone for sharing God’s love with you or others,
please email the church office at lmasters@ umcburlington.org for its possible
inclusion in the newsletter. The deadline for submitting newsletter information
is the twentieth of each month.
Thank you to all the new committee members filling the needs of
BUMC. If you are not listed as a committee member and you see something
you would like to accomplish, please feel free to address a committee
member to see how we can accomplish your vision.
For many years, Kathi Bahr has faithfully changed the paraments on the altar and pulpit according to
the liturgical seasons and special events. Kathi also refilled the oil in the altar candles. Sheree Damashek is
now taking care of these tasks. We appreciate both of you, and the service you take care of for your church
family. Thank you!
Dawn Freeman is decorating the communion table in this new year. Geneva
Bussard, Jane Griffith, and Kay Scott prepare and organize the Communion elements.
We are grateful to everyone who helps make this special part of worship go smoothly.
Kent Hoyt completed the 2013 audit and donated his services. We appreciate
his time, talent, and generosity. We also grateful for Treasurer Becky Reeves’
thoroughness in maintaining orderly payments and records throughout the year.
Jim Leach shared: Thank you for all that you did for me and my family during my trying times. Also,
thank you to those that gave us funds to help. It was greatly appreciated. God Bless all of you for your
thoughts and prayers.
We are continually thankful for those who work to maintain our church building and grounds. Harold
Stubby bagged an enormous amount of leaves recently. Others have shoveled snow, sprinkled ice treatment,
etc. Your efforts are all appreciated.
Thank you to those who have signed up to share hospitality following 10:30service. Committees were
also assigned Sundays, as an additional opportunity to serve together. We appreciate the chance to fellowship
together after worship, and the refreshments are a special weekly treat.
The birthday potluck in January was a great success. Thanks goes to Darla Jones and Tami Kiefer for
decorating and organizing the event.
THE 2014 SOUPER BOWL WINNER IS…
GOD’S STOREHOUSE!
BUMC cast about 300 pounds of “votes” for
favorite post-season football teams. The majority
of the 254 canned item votes were cast for the
Denver Broncos, but God’s Storehouse was the
clear winner when they received the soup and
other items for local families in need. Footprints
youth helped organize the event. Gene Merry’s
birthday guests contributed heavily to the
Broncos’ domination. Thanks to all who gave!
Pictured here is only the beginning of the votes cast. More
than 300 pounds of food including mostly soup was collected
for “Souper Bowl” Sunday, benefiting God’s Storehouse.

Happy February BUMC!
Can you believe it’s already that time of year again? Prayer Partner time! The
Lenten season is an integral part of our Christian faith, and it is through the committed
adults of our congregation that our youth learn about and cultivate their own personal faith
walk. For those unfamiliar with Prayer Partners, it is a program where the adults at
BUMC minister and mentor to our youth through anonymous notes, cards, and small gifts.
The Prayer Partner program begins on Ash Wednesday (March 5, 2014), and the partners then reveal
themselves on Palm Sunday (April 13, 2014). If you are interested in praying for a child in our congregation
during the Lenten season or you have a child who you would like to have included in the program, sign up on
the tear off strip found in the bulletin, contact Adrienne Fleming, or the church office.
Rehearsals begin March 2nd for this year’s Easter program scheduled for Palm
Sunday, April 13th. If you have a child that would like to be a part of this exciting program,
please contact Adrienne or bring them to practice. We will be practicing after the 10:30 am
service on Sundays at 12:30 pm. If you are interested in assisting with the program or
providing a light lunch following 10:30 service for the participants, please contact Adrienne.
Are you eager for a certain type of class, whether it is a young mother’s group,
parenting class, financial workshop, or a certain type of enrichment group? If so, please do not hesitate to let
me know! We want to offer our congregation the specific ministry wants and needs present.
Lastly, a heartfelt “Thank You” to all of those that assisted with the Super Soda Sunday celebration
on Super Bowl Sunday! The BUMC Sunday School youth enjoyed ice cream floats and learned all about
“faith and football!”
In His love,
Adrienne
February Greetings to you all!
The youth have been somewhat busy so far this year, but the pace only quickens for the next 2 months.
We started the year with another snow storm while in Topeka at the OneEvent for the conference youth. What
is it with the youth going on trips and having to drive in storms? But the weather keeps us close, good times.
The OneEvent was a great time for the youth with some wonderful music, cool artist work, great speakers and
nifty breakout sessions. Perhaps the best part was being together as a group. Great kids!
February has a few things going on with the Souper Bowl, Dare2Share and then the Valentine Lunch
on the 16th after 10:30 service. With the Big Game on the 2nd, the youth met right after church and were free
for the evening to enjoy the game with friends or family. On the 7th we leave for Lincoln, NE to attend
Dare2Share. We'll be back on the 8th late in the evening. Following D2S is the Valentine Lunch on the 16th.
If you are keeping track at home, that is 3 events in 3 weeks. Pray for us!
Lastly, the youth would like to thank Jan Wideman, Steve and Verla Bartholomew and Cynthia Glenn
for their much appreciated dinners at our weekly youth meetings! Susan has been doing a wonderful job of
arranging dinners for our group of 15. If you are feeling up to it and would like to volunteer a dinner, give
Susan a call!
Christ's blessing to you,
Richard

SMALL GROUP OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL
There are several opportunities for fellowship and small group studies. If you
don’t see an area of interest listed that you like, please speak with Pastor Moon-Hee
or Christian Ed. Director Adrienne Fleming. Do you have an idea for a special group
activity? Let us know! Let’s get more small groups going with new areas of inter-
est. New groups could do activities together, study a common interest, cook
together, do community projects, etc. You decide! Let’s talk about it!
The adult Sunday school class meets every Sunday in the church library at
9:15 am. Larry Hauth is the instructor and all adults are welcome to join the study and discussion. Child care
is provided for adults in Sunday school with children too young for Sunday school classes. Children and
youth Sunday school classes also begin at 9:15 am in respective classrooms at BUMC.
A group meets in the courthouse conference room for a study at noon each Monday. Participants are
welcome to bring sack lunches to eat during the lunch hour study. Cindy Joy is the facilitator of this group.
They are currently studying “A Woman’s Guide to Finding Contentment: Calm My Anxious Heart” by Linda
Dillow. Their next study will be Max Lucado’s “Fearless: Imagine Your Life Without Fear”.
A women’s group meets Thursdays in the church library for a study 11 am to
noon. Paula Bruce is the leader of this group and all women are invited to attend. The
group is currently choosing a new study to begin.
A monthly men’s breakfast meeting is held the second Friday of each month.
All men are invited to share food, faith, and fellowship in Garst Hall. Three groups of
men rotate, taking turns cooking breakfast.
At right, Young-Gil Bahng “toasts” to birth-
days at the recent birthday potluck. Guests
were seated according to their birth month.
BUMC IN ACTION...SHARING TIME, LOVE
The ladies above arrange times
to meet and make hats and scarves
for local school children to wear
when students don’t have their own
winter weather clothing at school.
A birthday potluck lunch was
held Jan. 26 after 10:30 service.
Many enjoyed fellowship and food
along with a birthday cupcake
decorating station shown at the
right.
Plan to attend another fun
potluck coming up on March 16
following 10:30 service!
