    New English Ballet Theatre creates 21stcentury ballet for 21st century audiences.As part of this process, NEBT is committedto introducing ballet to new audiences andyoung people through our touring andoutreach programme.

    This summer, we performed the stylish‘Lonesome Gun’ and ‘Mad Women’ by Kristen McNally and ‘Wundarra’ by Daniela Cardim at Latitude and at the Canary Wharf Summer Sessions. In October we held our second TakingChances: Choreography Lab which givesemerging choreographers the opportunityto create new work and develop theirartistic potential. We featured works bytalented choreographers Jessica Edgley,Jenna Lee and Cameron McMillan.

    We are thrilled to be bringing our world premiere of five new ballets to the Peacock Theatre this November.Quint-essential: Five New Ballets presents new work by up and comingchoreographers in the world of ballet:Daniela Cardim, Kristin McNally, Marcelino Sambé, George Williamson, and Valentino Zucchetti.

    This ballet examines the breakdown of a relationship indream-like episodes, exploring the inner dialogue oflovers who have become strangers to each other and tothemselves. Three dancers are used to portray each ofthe two central characters, floating through their past andpresent as they navigate and try to come to terms withthe reality of their shipwrecked relationship.

  • KAREN PILKINGTON-MIKSAArtistic Director and CEO

    Karen Pilkington-Miksa B.Ed., ARADgrew up in England and WashingtonD.C. She trained as a classical dancerand performed with the Seattle Balletbefore moving to London to pursueher career as a freelance dancer andchoreographer. She’s choreographedfor opera groups and BBC television,formed her own ballet company,Chelsea Dance and she started theKnightsbridge Ballet School in 1979.

    Her work in mounting ballet ledKaren to a second career as a painterand sculptor. She subsequentlystudied at the Academy of Fine Art in New York and at HeatherleySchool of Fine Art in London. Karen’ssculpture and paintings, which reflect a fascination with the humanfigure and dancers in motion andperformance, have been exhibited in the US and UK and are found in many private collections.

    In 2011, Karen founded NEBT toshowcase new choreography and to support the careers of emergingdancers, artists, designers andchoreographers. So far, the companyhas commissioned 16 new danceworks, furthered the careers of 57 young dancers and showcasedthe talents of 12 emergingchoreographers, 47 musicians and 11 designers. NEBT are a proud partner organisation of the LyricHammersmith and collaborateregularly with Cheltenham MusicFestival, Garsington Opera andLatitude Festival. This year saw the launch of our Blueprint forPartnership scheme in associationwith The Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet.

    DANIELA CARDIM Company Manager & Ballet Mistress

    Daniela Cardim danced with theDutch National Ballet in Amsterdamfor 11 years and with Ballet doTheatro Municipal do Rio de Janeirofor 5 years. She was commissionedby Dutch National Ballet to createchoreographic works for thecompany on three occasions.

    In 2016 she created Uirapuru forBallet do Theatro Municipal do Riode Janeiro, work successfullyreceived by both critics andaudience. She also created works forSão Paulo Companhia de Dança,Dutch National Ballet's School,School of American Ballet (as part ofthe New York ChoreographicInstitute) and the Liverpool Instituteof Performing Arts.

    Daniela holds a first class degree inArts Management. She works withNEBT as Company Manager andBallet Mistress. She is also one ofNEBT's choreographers and createdworks for the company in 2014 and2015. She was recently cited as ‘new name to watch’ by DanceEurope Magazine’s Critics’ Choice for these works.

    JESSICA EDGLEY Ballet Mistress

    Born in Canada, Jessica trained atVancouver Goh Ballet Academy andAmerica’s Pacific Northwest BalletSchool on full scholarship, learning a variety of techniques includingRAD and with heavy focus onVaganova and Balanchine. She alsodanced with Pacific Northwest Balletcompany before embarking on a 12 year career, dancing leading and soloist roles for companies such as English National Ballet, NationalBallet of Ireland and NorwegianNational Ballet, where she alsochoreographed for their Ballet Lab.

    Jessica then went on to receive herteaching diploma (PDTD) from theRoyal Academy of Dance in 2009and has since become Ballet Mistressfor and choreographed for The NewEnglish Ballet Theatre as well asteaching at various schools includingRoyal Academy of Dance (BA HonsBallet Education programme), NorthLondon Ballet Academy, CentralSchool of Ballet and London StudioCentre. She has also appeared as a guest teacher for schools acrossEurope and Canada.

    As Ballet Mistress for New EnglishBallet Theatre, Jessica has workedwith a variety of choreographerssuch as Wayne Eagling, MichaelCorder, Ernst Meisner, Kristen McNally and George Williamson.

    MATZ SKOOGProduction Liaison & Guest Teacher

    Matz Skoog trained as a dancer inSweden and in the former SovietUnion. After graduating he became a member of the Royal SwedishBallet, later joining English NationalBallet where, along with other guestengagements, he remained as aPrincipal Dancer for several years.Matz has enjoyed an extensivedancing career at the highest levelin both classical ballet andcontemporary dance, working withartists such as Mark Morris, Mats Ek, Jiri Kylian, Christopher Bruce, Sir Fredrick Ashton and RudolfNureyev to mention but a few.

    He has also been a member ofNetherlands Dance Theatre andRambert Dance Company. In 1996Matz was appointed Artistic Directorof the Royal New Zealand Ballet, a position he held until 2001. From 2001 to 2005 he was ArtisticDirector of English National Ballet.Since 2006 Matz is pursuing aninternational freelance career as a teacher, coach and artisticconsultant.

    RICHARD BLACKFORD Music Director

    The internationally acclaimedcomposer and conductor RichardBlackford was the first Director ofMusic at The Royal Ballet School,during which time he conducted in a Gala for Ninette de Valois at theRoyal Opera House. His many credits include productions at the Royal National Theatre, Brno Philharmonic (where he wasComposer/Conductor-In-Residence),Cheltenham Festival, BBC andClassic FM broadcasts. His workshave been recorded on the Decca,Warner, Sony and Nimbus labels. As well as works for the concert hall he has composed the music for over two hundred film scores,many of which have woninternational awards.

    LINCOLN SELIGMAN Artist and Visual Art Advisor

    Lincoln read law at Balliol Oxford but after several years working as ashipping lawyer in London and HongKong he jumped ship to become anartist. Initially he worked mainly onlarge murals around the world butmore recently has devoted much of his time to large scale suspendedsculptures and mobiles for highprofile atrium spaces, includingPhoenix City in Beijing for theChinese government. He also hasregular exhibitions of his paintings in London and New York and isdelighted to have the opportunity to extend his work to include musicand dance.

    Born in Liverpool, Kristen trainedwith Elizabeth Hill before joining The Royal Ballet Upper School in1999. She danced in ChristopherWheeldon’s Souvenirs and StevenGreenston’s Interpretations for theschool’s annual performance beforejoining the Royal Ballet in 2002. She was promoted to First Artist in 2007 and then Soloist in 2009. Her repertory includes Swan Lake, Manon, Romeo and Juliet,Ballet Imperial,

    Les Rendezvous, Gong, La Valse,Daphnis and Chloë, Onegin, The Lesson, The Seven Deadly Sins and Carmen.

    An increasingly successfulchoreographer, her previouschoreographic achievements includeYes We Did and Don’t Hate thePlayer, Hate the Game both of whichwere created for the New Worksperformances at the Linbury StudioTheatre in the Royal Opera House.She also created Metheus forBalletBoyz the TALENT in theLinbury Studio Theatre. Her balletLonesome Gun was performed togreat audience acclaim in NEBT’sdebut season in 2012, as well asMad Women in 2014 and 2015. In Summer 2016 NEBT brought both ballets to Latitude Festival and Canary Wharf Summer Sessions, to great acclaim.

    MARCELINO SAMBÉ

    Portuguese dancer Marcelino Sambéis a Soloist of The Royal Ballet. Hetrained at The Royal Ballet UpperSchool and graduated into theCompany during the 2012/13Season, promoted to First Artist in 2014 and Soloist in 2015.His repertory with the Companyincludes Hans-Peter/Nutcracker (The Nutcracker), Mercutio (Romeoand Juliet), Brother Clown (TheWinter’s Tale), Beggar Chief (Manon),Bluebird (The Sleeping Beauty),pasde trois (Swan Lake), lead couple pas de six (Giselle), Footman/Frog(Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland),Gypsy Boy (The Two Pigeons) and in Obsidian Tear, Aeternum, Requiem, Onegin, La Valse, TheFirebird and Within the Golden Hour. He has created roles in KimBrandstrup’s Ceremony of Innocence,Marriott’s Connectome, HofeshShechter’s Untouchable and WayneMcGregor’s Woolf Works.

    Sambé is a keen choreographer and was selected as one of the UK’semerging choreographers by YouthDance England in 2012. His M’ cã crésabi won second prize at the 2011Ursula Morton Choreographic Awardsand was performed in the School’sannual matinee that year. Worksinclude Preparations for the Last TVFake and The Chosen Victim for TheRoyal Ballet’s Draft Works. Sambé’sdance awards include a silver medalat the Moscow International BalletCompetition in 2008, first prize at theYouth American Grand Prix in 2009and a gold medal and special awardat the USA International BalletCompetition in 2010.

    GEORGE WILLIAMSON

    Born in Worcestershire, Georgetrained at the Elmhurst School forDance and English National BalletSchool, where his choreographicwork began. Whilst at the SchoolGeorge won the ChoreographicCompetition for three consecutiveyears and the CTRL-ALT-SHIFTAward. In 2010 he created Ana-Chro-Po for English National Ballet School’s Summerperformance, for Polish National Ballet he created Animus in 2011and for New English Ballet Theatre he created Threefold in 2012.

    Firebird was his first commissionfor English National Ballet receiving its world premiere at the LondonColiseum in 2012. My First Cinderella premiered at the Peacock Theatre,2013 and that same year Georgereceived a nomination for the Benois de la Danse Award for Firebird and created Tempuson English National Ballet for HerMajesty The Queen's CoronationFestival at Buckingham Palace. For Dutch National Ballet's JuniorCompany he created Dawn Dancesand for New York ChoreographicInstitute, Four On The Floor 2013and Outline 2015. In 2014 he produced My First Ballet: Coppélia and the following year, My FirstBallet: Swan Lake. In November2015 he created his first full-lengthnarrative ballet for LithuanianNational Ballet; Egle the Queen ofSerpents and Murmuration for ABTStudio Company. Future projectsinclude a new production of My FirstBallet: Sleeping Beauty, and a worldpremiere with Dutch National Ballet.

    VALENTINO ZUCCHETTI

    Born in Brescia, Italy, Valentinotrained at La Scala Ballet School inMilan and The Royal Ballet School,London, where he graduated in2007. He then worked with HeinzSpoerli’s Zurich Ballet for two yearsand Norwegian National Ballet forone year before joining The RoyalBallet in 2010 where he waspromoted to soloist in 2012.

    During his dancing career he hascreated roles in ballets by HeinzSpoerli, David Dawson, Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldonwhile working with many otherchoreographers including NachoDuato, Jivrí Kylián, John Neumeierand William Forsythe.

    Valentino’s choreographic careerstarted at the Royal Ballet Schoolwhere he won the Ursula MoretonChoreographic Competition in 2006.Since then, he has created numerouspas de deux, solos and pieces forthe Royal Ballet’s Draft Works from2011 to 2015. In collaboration withthe composer, Philip Glass, and withthe assistance of the Royal OperaHouse Music Department, Valentinodeveloped the three movementballet Orbital Motion, produced byNew English Ballet Theatre withcostumes by Emma Bailey.

    Choreographers

    ANN CHRISTOPHER RA

    Ann Christopher has worked as anon figurative sculptor for over 40years with numerous exhibitions,awards, commissions and works incollections in the UK and abroad.She was elected to the RoyalAcademy in1980.

    Ann also makes series of drawings,three of which are being used byNEBT, a project she was excited tobe part of – Dance, like sculpture, is manipulating shape and space –creating moving sculpture. Dance is an expression of emotion, Ann’ssculptures and drawings are staticexpressions of responses to herexperiences both visual andemotional. The sculptor and thechoreographer are one and the same except they chose to usedifferent materials.

  • ANNE LOVETT Piano

    Anne was born in Normandy, France. She began pianolessons at the age of three. She then went on to study atthe Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris with Pierre Reach (a pupil of the great Artur Rubinstein) and Alberto Neuman(a rare student of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli). At theage of just eleven, she was invited to perform in concert atthe Festival International d’Annecy, and a year later at theFestival International de Montdauphin. Anne then movedto the UK to further her education at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Hamish Milne. She also studiedcomposition with Ruth Byrchmore, chamber music withMichael Dussek, and jazz with Dominic Alldis. She thenundertook a Masters in Composition at Kings College,London. During her academic years, Anne took part inmany masterclasses, including those run by Pierre-LaurentAimard, Roger Muraro, Miriam Solovieff, Andrei Diev, John O’Connor and Rolf Hind.

    Since graduating, Anne has performed throughout Europe,in countries including Portugal, Norway, Italy, England, andFrance, as well as in Brazil. She has represented France and the UK in official engagements in both concerts andmasterclasses. She has been broadcast on ITV, the Germanstation ZDF, the radio station France Musique (RadioFrance group), French national TV network, France 3, and the European network, Mezzo.

    Anne leads collaborative work with artists from variousavenues, from acting to dance companies. This includes an instrumental project with producer and programmer,James Sanger, well known for his million selling work with Dido, Keane, U2 and The Cure.

    Anne’s deeply personal debut album Beyond (and Below)which comprises her own piano works was recentlyreleased to rave reviews on Discovery Records. She has justrecorded a new album engineered by multi-award winner,Mike Hatch (Grammys, BAFTAS and Gramophone Awards),which will include the first commercial release of Carl Vine’s‘Piano Sonata’. She has also just recorded the sonatas byFranck, Faure and Poulenc for the label Champs HillRecords with Grammy Award producer Raphael Mouterdeand violinist Giovanni Guzzo due to be released in January.

    GILDAS QUARTET Strings

    Christopher Jones, Violin. Gemma Sharples, Violin. Kay Stephen, Viola. Anna Menzies, Cello.

    Praised for their 'refreshing approach' and 'excitingprecision', the Gildas Quartet are fast establishingthemselves as one of the most exciting young ensemblesto emerge in recent years.

    The quartet are proud to be City Music Foundation Artists2015 and Junior Fellows at the Birmingham Conservatoire.They have performed to critical acclaim across the UK andEurope at major venues including the Purcell Room,Wigmore Hall, and live on BBC Radio 3. They will maketheir Bridgewater Hall debut later this year as part of theManchester Mid-day Concerts series. The quartet havefrequently been featured by the Park Lane Group YoungArtists scheme and are grateful for awards and supportfrom the Tunnell Trust, the Richard Carne Trust and theRoyal Northern College of Music.

    Passionate performers of a hugely diverse repertoire, theGildas Quartet have had the privilege of working with bothColin Matthews and Sir Harrison Birtwistle on performingthe composers' most recent string quartets at London’sSouthbank Centre and The Forge. The quartet performedlive via video link in New York's Carnegie Hall for theAmerican Composers' Orchestra, giving the worldpremière of Ray Lustig's 'Latency Canons' which received a glowing 4-star review in the New York Times. Otherrecent projects have seen them give recitals at the TwoMoors Festival, Hampton Court Palace, the Conway Halland Purcell Room, and an extensive Scottish tour reachingfrom Edinburgh to Orkney. With generous support fromthe Britten Pears Foundation, the quartet is delighted tohave been able to commission a new quartet from PhilipCashian which will receive its premiere in 2017.

    The Gildas Quartet has joined musicians such as AlexanderBaillie, Linda Merrick, the Medici Quartet, Timothy Orpenand Daniel Tong. Ongoing partnerships include quintetswith clarinettist Jack McNeill, soprano Raphaela Papadakisand pianist Sholto Kynoch, in addition to a number ofexciting projects with the New English Ballet Theatre.

    1. Alexander NuttallAlexander received his First Class BA (Hons) from the Central School of Ballet. Alexander also trained at Royal Academy of Dance withcertificates in Advanced Dance 1 and 2 – Distinction. His professionalaccomplishments include roles with Estonian National Ballet, New English Ballet Theatre, PeterSchaufuss Ballet and Ballet Cymru.Alex is thrilled to spend a secondseason with NEBT.

    2. Alexandra Cameron-MartinAlexandra is from Australia and has trained at The Australian Ballet School and The RussianChoreographic Academy. She hasperformed with English NationalBallet and in the London 2012Olympics. Alexandra is pleased to beback for a second season with NEBT.

    3. Bethany HeadlandBethany Headland of Melbourne,Australia, trained at Ballet TheatreAustralia. During her training she was selected to perform as aninternational guest artist in KualaLumpur in 2012 and also competedin the finals of Youth America GrandPrix. The following year she movedto the United States to dance withThe Washington Ballet, performingin Giselle, Peter Pan and TheNutcracker at The Kennedy Centre.Bethany toured with Vienna FestivalBallet before joining NEBT.

    4. Cecilia PacilloCecilia comes to us from Italy and isa graduate from Accademia Teatroalla Scala. Cecilia has performed with Teatro alla Scala, BucharestNational Opera and SemperoperBallett Dresden.

    5. Diogo BarbosaDiogo was born in Portugal andstudied ballet in the UK at EnglishNational Ballet School and TheRoyal Ballet School, White Lodge.Since graduating, Diogo has made appearances with NorthernBallet. This is Diogo’s first seasonwith NEBT.

    6. Gulio GalimbertiGiulio Galimberti hails from Italy andstudied at the Pavlova Ballet Schoolin Bergamo. Giulio has performedacross Europe with Kharkhiv NationalBallet in the Ukraine, Opéra Nationalde Bordeaux, Teatro Regio Torino,Teatro alla Scala, and Pavlova BalletCompany, Teatro Sociale/DonizzattiBergamo. Giulio joined NEBT inAugust 2016.

    7. Hannah SofoHannah is Australian and Italian andhas studied at the Tanya PearsonClassical Coaching Academy,Australia, and Hamburg Ballet of John Neumeier. Hannah hasperformed with Hamburg Ballet and Grand Theatre Lodz, Poland.

    8. Isabella SwietlickiIsabella is from the UK and hasstudied with English National Ballet School since 2013. She hasperformed with English NationalBallet in Le Corsaire and TheNutcracker. She has touredinternationally through Scotland and China with Ballet West in The Nutcracker, Swan Lake andRomeo & Juliet.

    9. Nathan HuntBritish born Nathan Hunt studied at English National Ballet School. He has performed in several balletsfor ENB including My First Ballet,The Nutcracker, Le Corsaire, Romeo& Juliet and the ENB OutreachFestival. He has also performed in La Sylphide for The QueenslandBallet London Tour.

    10. Nicola HenshallNicola received her training at TheRoyal Ballet School where she wasawarded The Ashton Award, ThePamela Self Award and The AprilOlrich Award. Nicola performed with the Wayne McGregor Companyat the BRIT Awards in 2016. Nicolahas also performed in the Corps deBallet with English National Ballet.

    11. Pablo Luque RomeroNEBT’s youngest dancer, PabloLuque Romero, studied in France at the Ecole Supérieure de Danse de Cannes, in Spain at ConservatorioProfesional De Danza De AlbaceteJosé Antonio Ruiz and in England atEnglish National Ballet School. Pablohas performed with English NationalBallet in The Nutcracker and Romeo & Juliet.

    12. Riccardo RodighieroItalian born Riccardo Rodighieroattended the English National BalletSchool and has performed with theEnglish National Ballet in Romeo &Juliet and The Nutcracker. Riccardomakes his professional debut withNEBT this season.

    13. Seamus WilkinsonBritish born Seamus Wilkinsonstudied at English National BalletSchool and has performed with theEnglish National Ballet on UK Tour, in Summer Showcases and in London.This is his first season with NEBT.

    14. Zoe ArshamianZoe was born in Cheshire andstudied at the Royal Ballet Schooland Central School of Ballet. As astudent, Zoe danced with The RoyalBallet in The Sleeping Beauty, SwanLake and The Nutcracker and alsowith Northern Ballet in Swan Lake.Joining The National Ballet of Ireland in 2011, Zoe performed in Scheherazade & 1,001 ArabianNights, Romeo & Juliet and Carmen.In 2014, she joined Phantom of theOpera West-end, dancing in TheBallet Chorus of the Opera Populairefor 2 years.
