Rob has an extensive teaching background in Physics and helped write the syllabus and course material for the Cosmology Distinction Course and the HSC Physics syllabus in NSW. He coordinates the PULSE@Parkes project at CSIRO, is the Australian coordinator for the international Galileo Teacher Training Program and has presented many workshop sessions here and overseas. Rob is also an experienced traveler who has visited many of the world’s great telescopes – hardly surprising for a man who loves discovering new and far off places. Preliminary Itinerary

Day 1: Friday 24th September, 2010 - KONA

Depart Sydney on your Hawai’ian airlines flight to Kona, connecting in Honolulu. You’ll arrive early afternoon where you’ll be met and shown around Kona on an orientation tour including the Onizuka Museum. After settling into your hotel room, you’ll meet up with the group for a dinner in the hotel. (HD)

Day 2: Saturday 25th September, 2010 - KONA

Today is all about Kona. You’ll have some time to walk through Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, before discovering Captain Cook Monument. We’ve organised a lunch by the water for you at the Kona Brewery. (B,L)

Day 3: Sunday 26th September, 2010 - HILO

Setting off for the other side of the island, we’ll take the opportunity to visit Hawai’i’s National Volcano Park in some depth, before arriving at our well positioned hotel the Hilo Castle Hotel . (B,D)

Day 4: Monday 27th September, 2010 - HILO

Our Astronomy Workshop commences today. The course is accredited and will arm you with many activities to take back to your students and inspire their insight into the universe. The workshop program is still being finalized but will include sessions by professional astronomers and some of America’s foremost astronomy educators. (B)

Day 5: Tuesday 28th September ,2010 - HILO

Workshop continues today but after the day of learning we’ll unite as a group for dinner in one of Hilo’s local diners. (B,D)

Day 6: Wednesday 29th September, 2010 - HILO

Now you get to experience Mauna Kea! A little free time in the morning to catch up with your sleep and get ready for our expedition to Mauna Kea. Before travelling up the mountain, you’ll have time to explore the Imiloa Centre for Astronomy. The drive to the summit of Mauna Kea is one you'll never forget. It's hard to believe you're in Hawai’i as you climb to 13,796' elevation above sea level. Once at the summit we are afforded spectacular views of the horizon, Haleakala on Maui, Mauna Loa and Hualalai, and Mauna Kea's world-class array of telescopes including Gemini North which we will tour. After dark we will have the chance to explore the stunning night sky through small optical telescopes at the Visitor Information Station at 2,800m. Dinner is included in the tour. (B,D)

NB: Guests should be able to hike on uneven or rocky terrain. Guests may sometimes encounter cool, wet or muddy conditions. Due to high altitude this tour is not advised for those with respiratory, circulatory or heart conditions, pregnancy or poor health.

Day 7: Thursday 30th September, 2010 - HONOLULU

Our midmorning departure from Hilo will allow us time to transfer to the Pearl Harbor and USS Missouri, Memorial Centre. You’ll have an orientation tour around Honolulu pointing out Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana Shopping Mall. We highly recommend a cocktail on the beach at sunset (look out for the green flash) and then dinner at the Cheesecake Shop. (not included) (B)

Day 8: Friday 1st September, 2010 - HONOLULU

Today we explore Oahu. The North Shore with its infamous surf, Dole Pineapple Farm and the Polynesian Cultural Centre. A farewell dinner is included in this evening’s activities. (B,D)

Day 9: Saturday 2nd October, 2010 - Transit

Say goodbye to Hawai’i and beautiful Waikiki Beach. Your flight leaves from Honolulu midmorning and is scheduled to arrive the following evening in Sydney. If you are interested in staying on or travelling to other destinations within Hawai’i please let us know at the time of booking.

Day 10: Sunday 3rd October, 2010 - SYDNEY

Arrive Sydney early afternoon.

The hotels chosen on this itinerary give you a good, comfortable nights rest close to town and facilities and range from 3.5 – 4.5 star. Accommodation has been priced on a twin share basis, in double-double rooms (with both participants receiving a double bed.) If you wish to have a room to yourself, consider taking up the single supplement.
