Catholic Ministries Appeal

We did it before and we can do it again! Thank for you all you have done to maintain our parish as a vibrant faith community during these last six months since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Your energy, participation and support are most appreciated.

Christ Our Light is the perfect theme for this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) since we all certainly need Jesus in our lives during these darker times and since, just as we joyfully did last year, we will again complete our CMA parish responsibility before this Christmas! The Catholic Ministries Appeal provides much needed services to our parish. Monies raised go to serve people in need through Catholic Charities and assists in educating our young in the Catholic Faith. It supports our Seminarians, Deacons, Pastoral Leaders and Vocations as well as the ministries of our Pope and Bishop. Jesus led by example in loving and caring for our neighbor. He asks us to do the same. The initial mailing of the CMA from Bishop Salvatore Matano and Fr. Tim was sent to all registered households. St. Rita’s responsibility is $160,000, the same as last year. We have an obligation to support the many vital ministries of the Diocese of Rochester which certainly brings the Light of Christ to many people! In seven weeks, on December 13, with the your generosity and the help of the Grace of God, we will celebrate the successful completion of this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal! If you did not receive a mailing or if you are new to our parish, we would so appreciate your participation. There are donation envelopes available in the greeting area in church or you may go online to donate.

Join Fr. Tim for this special annual liturgy in remembrance of all those who have gone before us. We will read the names of the deceased from the past year and a candle will have been lit for each of these people.

If you would like to include a family member or friend’s name to be read at this liturgy, please contact Julie Cohn at Julie.cohn@dor.org or call 671-1100 ext. 13.

All are welcome to join us for this beautiful remembrance liturgy. Due to COVID restrictions we will be seating family members together and socially distanced from others. Please wear a mask to church. We are unable to have a reception following Mass this year.

Blessing of Graves

Sunday, November 1

at the West Webster Cemetery

Immediately following the 10:30am Mass on Sunday, November 1 (around 11:40am), all are welcome to gather at the site of their loved one's grave across the street at the West Webster Cemetery.

Fr. Tim, Deacon Jim and Deacon Rick will be there to bless the graves of any of your friends and family members who are buried there. Each grave with a family member or friend standing by it will be sprinkled with Holy Water and blessed.

All are welcome to join us for this special remembrance of our faithful departed. It’s rain or shine so bring an umbrella just in case.

Companions in Grief Group

Even though we are unable to resume our usual monthly Companions in Grief gatherings, we want you to know that we are here to help as you experience the loss of loved ones, whether your losses are recent or happened in the past.

Our daily Mass on Thursday, October 29 at 6:00pm will be offered for anyone dealing with a loss. No seating reservation is needed.

We would like to offer support as you walk this difficult journey. Please know that you do not have to walk this path alone.

CHOOSE LOVE

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind and You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37,39)

Did you ever ask yourself why, with all the rules of the Church, with the Ten Commandments to guide us, why does the whole law depend on these two commandments? Well, consider that love is a relationship, and God asks us to throw ourselves headlong into that loving relationship with Him and our neighbors with the same unabashed fervor! When we do that, when we approach life from that position of love, it changes the way we treat each other. And the “other” is the refugee, the poor, the most vulnerable. It also allows us the freedom to act this way because of knowing and trusting that we will be treated with the same love and compassion. It really is that simple.

Fear, cynicism, distrust and a need to control, are some of what holds us back from loving the way God asks us to love. These, unfortunately, are all prevalent in our world today. Therefore, I encourage us all to reflect upon what makes us afraid, what makes us distrustful and what would it take to change that mindset?

You see it is up to us as individuals and a nation to stop this wave of distrust and cynicism by living trustworthy loving lives; lives modelled after Jesus. Yes, I will say it again . . . it really is that simple.

The reason I say it is simple is because God wouldn’t tell us to live our lives this way without giving us the ability to do it. But He also gives us free will. We simply need to choose to live this way. So what is your choice?

The Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the hope that you will enter more fully into the Mass!

“You Shall Love The Lord, Your God, With All Your Heart”

I n our readings this Sunday, we focus our attention on the summation of all of

Scripture (the law and the propjets) into two great loves—Love of God and love of

neighbor.

In our first reading (Exodus 22:20-26), we hear part of the Covenant Code, wherein

God instructed Moses how the Israelites were to live in right covenant relationship

with God and one-another. Particular emphasis was placed on the refugee (alien), the

poor, and the widow and the orphan - the most vulnerable of society.

Thus says the LORD: "You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once

In our Epistle reading (1 Thessalonians 1:5-10), St. Paul praised the faith of the Thessalonians and their recent turn

from worshiping idols to worshiping the one true God. This love of God is the foundation of their faith. Paul reminds

us that we are to be imitators of Jesus and of the Saints that have gone before us - with joy, even in affliction. This is

how our faith is transmitted from one generation to the next.

In our Gospel reading (Matthew 22:34-40), we hear yet another Jewish leader try to test Jesus. All of our readings

from the past few weeks take place during Jesus’ last week of his life, as he entered Jerusalem and the leaders

plotted against him to kill him. In this passage, Jesus responded to the Jewish scholar by reciting two commands

from the Torah. The first was the daily recitation of the Shema’ in Deuteronomy 6:4-6 “Hear oh Israel! The Lord is

our God.” The second was from Leviticus 19:18, “You shall love your neighbor as your self.” In this, Jesus summed

up the entire law and prophets (all of scripture). In so doing, Jesus did not abandon the ten commandments, but

summarized them into two categories—the love of God (commandments 1 thru 3) and love of neighbor

(commandments 4 thru 10).

L ove is not a passive word, it connotes action. It is easy to love when there is little cost. That's not the love we

are called to. It is to love completely with our entire being—”all of our heart, all of our soul and all of our mind.”;

It is to love joyfully "even in great affliction". This is how God loves us and it is how he asks us to love him and one

another.

FOOD COLLECTION FOR THOSE IN NEED

As the pandemic continues, so do the needs of the poor. St. Rita Parish is restarting our efforts to collect food and pantry items for these following programs and ministries who offer take-out meals, food pantry, and assistance to those in need: Saints Peter & Paul Soup Kitchen, HOPE Ministry, House of Mercy, Saint Joseph's House of Hospitality.

Nonperishable items may be dropped off in the St. Rita Church greeting area for distribution to the above ministries. The church is open Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings during daily Mass from 8-9am, Tuesdays during Adoration 2-5pm, Thursday evening during Mass from 6-7pm and during our weekend Masses.

Also, perishable and nonperishable items may be dropped off on the front porch at the home of Tony & Linda Barbeau, 33 Simone Terrace, in Webster. (Contact Tony at 585-781-4311 if you leave perishable items.)

Your support of these outreach ministries is greatly appreciated. Donations from St. Rita have been instrumental in keeping these programs going during the pandemic.
