Wyonegonic Season 2015April 1, 2015

Dear Alumnae,

Counselors and camp staff have an enormous job. They are key to the adjustment and happiness of their campers.

If we ask you, WHICH counselors you remember and WHY, I bet there are names that pop to the top of your list. Maybe you can find some of their faces in the photos sprinkled throughout this edition.

Of course we hire staff who want to work with children and love the out of doors. But, the hiring process goes beyond that. Staff not only complete applications and send resumes but they pass a reference assessment and interview process (either in person or by skype). They need to impress us with their ability to be responsible leaders and constant positive role models.

We have a large staff of 100 who either live-in with campers, are supervisors in activities or play important roles as support staff. We are blessed to have returning directors, key staff and supervisors. For example the Sudduths represent 138 years at Wyo; our three unit directors and director of program have been on the shores of Moose Pond for 71 combined summers.Other staff come from:• graduates of our two-year Leadership Training Program (CITs and ACs)• past campers• referrals from past staff• college interns• the next generation of alumnae• International referral organizationsWe are often asked what percentage of staff are returning. It is safe to say that Wyonegonic averages 70% that have been with us previously. Wyonegonic is fortunate to have this loyalty. We are employing mostly college-age staff who need to earn money for school expenses and also gain experiences for their future career. There is a good argument that life-skills learned at camp will help them get through college and successfully into their chosen professions.

In Camping Magazine, we recently read that the Dean of Admissions at Princeton has recommended that students return to their summer camps as senior leaders and counselors instead of other academic building resumes. Academics might get them admitted but life skills help them stay in college.CNBC ran a story last spring titled “Summer Camp May Improve College Admissions.”

Wyonegonic is teaching more than how to make friends and appreciate the out of doors. Much of the value of the camp experience these staff gain is to model and teach life-skills: tenacity, self-confidence, optimism, grit, collaboration, resiliency and compassion.

We thank Whit Ryan, our Director of staff recruiting and leadership development , who has been with us 18 years and Susie Sudduth Hammond, for taking on the challenge of hiring Wyonegonic staff. They assemble each piece of this intricate puzzle with the best outcomes of our campers in mind. Thank you Whit and Susie for your successful efforts.

Sincerely,

The Sudduths

Wyonegonic is a member of ACA, the American Camp Association

Catharine Patterson is employed at Lehigh University as a Learning Assistant. In May, she is on the search to replace this temporary job that utilizes her Masters Degree in counseling. “Cat-Pat” has a wedding date scheduled for mid-June. Mom, Donna Patterson came to their Maine getaway cabin and skied Pleasant Mt. She, Joe and Joey then came to the Sudduth Farmhouse for Saturday dinner. Sara Patterson also came up for two days of skiing Pleasant MT. Sara used her architectural skills to design their Maine cabin. Carlyn Patterson Gentile is now just an hour away from the family home. She is juggling mother responsibilities with her long days of medical interning near Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia. Kevin is one year old. Senior Campers enjoyed the Wyo slide show and dinner at the Sudduth Farmhouse in January: Nell Spencer, Chloe Wendler, Camelia Ghadfa, Kendra Learned.

Louise Jenkinson reported that Jed Palmer spent his first Christmas away from US soil and they enjoyed the holidays together in the UK. Louise is now in Massachusetts and the couple enjoyed a quick visit to Maine and a walk through camp. Cordelia Orillac will start medical school after her college graduation from Princeton. She has recently visited Spain with family members. Leticia Shaw has been working in Washington, DC for the past five years. She reports there is always something interesting to do in DC. Amy Bonnefond and her husband Jim Smucker are faculty at Berwick Academy in Southern Maine. Amy is director of Advancement and is the middle school ice hockey coach.

From Barbara McDonald:

When I was asked to reflect upon my time at Wyo, I started making a mental list of some of the highlights of my 12 wonderful summers on the shores of Moose Pond. There is so much that I cherish, though the power of the experience is difficult to put into words. So, in honor of the Wyo Banquet Night tradition, I have put my thoughts into a song (to the tune of “My Favorite Things”):

My Favorite [Wyo] Things Raindrops on cabin roofs

and loons on the lake,Colorful sunsets

and reflector oven cakes,Trips down the Saco in aluminum canoes,

Summiting Pleasant Mountain in big hiking shoes.

Green and white fashion with striped Hannold’s shirts,

Making campfires and banana boat desserts,Beach days at Crescent

and the fun that it brings,These are a few of my favorite Wyo things.Costume box dresses

and evening circle singing,EP in the Wiggie

and wake-up bell ringing,Visits to Winona

and Grove on Sundays,These are a few of my

favorite Wyo ways. When the wind blows,

When the sun goes,When the greenie’s bad...

I simply remember my many Wyo friends

And then I don’t feel so sad.

Through my years at Wyo, Scott and I fell in love with Maine. We have returned to Maine every year since 1982. With the 3rd generation of McDonalds now on the Shores, we are happy to see that our family shares the passion for the area and all that Camp means to us.

Alumnae News - The Cobb Years

Margaret (Missy) Lindsey Sanborn

From Shakespeare to the Dali Lama, famous quotes are continually thrown our way to show us how best to live. In turn, I offer here my own sacred trinity of Wyo quotes that have thrown a good deal of light on my life.

“What’s the matter?! Are you afraid to get dirt under your fingernails??”–Betty Lou (“Squi”) Squires, counselor, Saco River, 1962

“Just be flexible.”Nancy (Teddy) Rupp, CIT Director, CIT table (daily,) 1965

“If you understand the beauty of this cotter pin, you will understand a secret of the universe.”George N. Sudduth, Co-Director, Wyonegonic, sailing dock, 1972

I’ll start with the fingernails. Squi was right. I was afraid to get that sandy, Saco River dirt under my nails. But the comment transformed me on the spot. Never again. Not during JMG testing camp, or while leading trips on tricky Flagstaff Lake, or in teaching positions later in life. I learned to do the hard stuff: to put off a planned lesson to talk and cry with students who had just lost a classmate in a car accident; to dig into the text of Beowulf and find a way to get the class jocks to love it; to volunteer for the unglamorous but grass roots university committees. Thank you, Squi.

Teddy’s (and Sandy Farrell’s, too) insistence on flexibility. What a lesson to learn—because life is what happens when you are planning for something else. Whether it was when I changed career paths, went back to graduate school, had my son at forty, or found myself in a new marriage, those words echoed. And I was really lucky to do my graduate work at the University of New Hampshire where I could actually see Teddy and hear those words again in person!

The cotter pin. This steel-strong pin joins an immovable deck fitting to a wildly moveable wire that keeps a boat mast up. In other words, it is what connects the wind power to the hull and makes the thing go. Amazing, and it is only an inch long on a Widgeon. George was right. You may not get a lot of glory from being a cotter pin, but you get a lot of satisfaction in making things go. And the exquisite tension placed on you hones and strengthens you. I could not have succeeded as a dean for those wildly moveable first-year students at Trinity College without understanding the secret of how to be a cotter pin.

I am retired now from over forty satisfying years in academia and have the good fortune to live on the Lower Ridge in Bridgton, Maine. I watch the changing light and cloud formations daily over Pleasant Mountain. (It is alive, you know!) My sisters, Mary Sewall and Catie (third generation campers and counselors like me) live in or visit Maine regularly. My fellow Wyo sailing counselor, Linda Whiting, lives on Hio Ridge and teaches me to weave tapestries like she does (if only I were that good!). And my son Matt, a fourth generation Winona camper and counselor, just became a Registered Maine Guide. Dirt is often under my fingernails, every day is an exercise in flexibility, and my husband Drew, like me, knows how to be a cotter pin. Life is good. Thank you, Camp Wyonegonic.

Family Camp here we come! - Ori Strom Helms

My husband and I had been talking about going to Wyonegonic Family Camp for years but decided to wait until our daughter was four. We went last summer and I would recommend it for kids of any age, and for adults without children too. Horseback riding, sailing, rock wall climbing, kayaking, SUP, canoeing, pottery, hiking - activity options were endless. We had the freedom to try a variety of new things - so many options: high activity or lounging on the dock reading a book in the sunshine. No one in the family felt left out or bored. We loved no car-pooling, grocery shopping or telephone messages. We were free to do what we wanted. Just what we all dream of in the busyness of our everyday lives.

It is truly hard to describe the whole camp experience to non-camp friends. How do you explain the spirit of creativity at the camp fire at Tee Pee Point? Not until you are at Wyonegonic in the relaxed setting do you appreciate the comradery, the clear waters of Moose Pond, the loons singing you to sleep each night and the nutritionally prepared good food at meal time.

There were a few surprises. We enjoyed watching my kids help with chores and learn by participating. Our shy eight-year-old son bonded with international counselors as if he had been there all summer, and my daughter rode a horse, not pony rides, a real horse! We felt safe in letting our kids be independent. This was priceless and allowed everyone to feel comfortable and have fun. We still can’t explain all the good feelings and happiness. So our experience suggests, “come give it a try and discover for yourself.”
