Welcome to the 2017 Big Sky Quilt Retreat—New Quilts from Old Favorites. For those who already have an addiction to fabric, we hope you find a class to improve or add a skill. For those whose goal is to use that “stash,” there are classes for you. Our committee has selected a variety of instructors who we feel will challenge all levels of quilters in traditional to modern quilting, beading, machine quilting techniques and thread play techniques. The evening mystery classes are meant to do the same. The Vendor Mall and Quilt Show will be part of the fun. Vendors were selected to provide you a wide range of merchandise. New categories have been added to the non-juried quilt show. We ask that you enter your quilt(s) and/or art pieces. Seeing others entries inspires everyone. The featured quilting artist is Barb Olson. Mark your calendars for March 8-11. Mail those registrations early and get those quilts and art pieces ready to enter in the quilt show. The welcome reception for the instructors is Wednesday, March 8, beginning at 6:30 pm. See you then!

Gem 30 Twinkler—Kathy Moorhead Johnson The Gem 30 Twinkler uses simple strip sets of 2 1/2" strips cut into wedges sewn into one piece Gem 30 wedges. Surprisingly simple technique for a final project with the illu-sion of complexity. In other words, it looks like you've worked harder than you really had to! The project includes a template for the background pieces, although using a Gem 10 Tool makes it much easier. 44” X 46”

Thursday, March 9, Classes

Shanty Town—Rana Heredia This workshop is for the student who wants to bring a modern, scrappy twist to a traditional schoolhouse block. Students will learn foundation string piecing tech-niques while creating neighborhoods of color.

Machine Quilting—Monique Kleinhans

Discover the possibilities of machine quilting with your own machine. This is a skill building class where we will also discuss threads, needles, different battings and so much more. Take the next step to finishing your projects!

Mystery Class—Wanda Thomas No sewing machine required for this evening mystery project. The only sewing will be to apply the binding to the finished project which can easily be done at home. Just relax and come to a “cutting andpasting” class. Kits available for $20

Crazy Beading—Nancy Eha Learn to replicate crazy quilt needlework embroidery stitches entirely with beads. Nancy Eha calls this Crazy Beading, as crazy quilts inspired her to develop these beading tech-niques. Three stitches: beaded fans, beaded feathers, and beaded backstitch vines will be covered. Then explore bead embellishment additions for these stitches including a variety of beaded flower and leaf options and beaded grapes. No prior beading experience necessary. Friday, March 10, Classes

White Rose—Rana Heredia This workshop will focus on traditional string quilting. Stu-dents will learn basic string quilting techniques while creat-ing their own set of quilt blocks. Additionally, students will learn basic machine applique techniques while constructing a French rose.

Stacked 4-Patch in BQ Setting—Kathy Moorhead Johnson I love the BQ pattern from Maple Island Quilts but jazzed it up by making and using Stacked 4-Patch blocks instead of the plain blocks of fabric that the pattern calls for. This is a simple pattern to put together but there are so many possibilities for variations. And if you have not done any stacked patterns before you will fall in love with this technique. Playing with the stacked blocks is addicting! You can add sashing and/or borders if you choose too. We will concentrate on making the blocks and I will have lots of samples of variations.

Intro to Thread Art—Monique Kleinhans Give your projects added depth and dimension by using thread to em-bellish and emphasize, or even create an entire focus piece. This is a skill building class that will help you engage your creativity and drop your feed dogs.

Starburst—Nancy Sasse This is a class where you design a spinning starburst that reflects your love of color & movement! Using a 10 degree ruler (which will be available in the classroom for a 35% discount), solids colors (or batiks) & an interesting background, you will create a gorgeous one-of-a-kind-quilt!

Mystery Quilt—Lauren Rogers It's a Mystery! Join Lauren and have fun making this project. You'll learn how to embellish with circles and what fun we can have. You will end up with a great home décor item while learning different techniques and cutting options. Bring your machine, ewing supplies and imagination! Kits available.

The Finishing Edge - Kathy Moorhead Johnson In this class we will explore several ways of finishing the edge of your quilt instead of standard straight binding. These will just be practice samples so no project is required to be finished after class! Just some fun finishes to add a little more pizzaz to your quilts.

Extreme Strings—Rana Heredia This workshop is for extreme string piecers and scrap busters. Six different string blocks will be introduced as well as instruction on how to set blocks into a cohesive design. Additionally, students have the option of adding a word to their unique de-sign.

Quilting My Quadrilaterals—Connie Dilts Create your own small wall hanging or tablemat using batiks, scraps of wool and beads. You will learn an easy way to apply your wool pieces to fabric, use decorative embroidery stitches and then enjoy embellishing your squares with beads, decorative or memorable pins, (including your collection of quilting pins) or additional stitching. This pattern may be used to learn new stitches, create a sampler of stitches or beadwork, preserve memo-ries, or make a seasonal design. The class will introduce you to sewing with smaller pieces

Beaded Kaleidoscope—Nancy Eha Recreate your own dazzling kaleidoscope imagery with glass beads. Numerous design options will be presented as you explore Nancy’s elevated beading techniques. The kalei-doscope is created with elevated seed bead lines that do not rest on the fabric, but are supported above the fabric surface. The finished 3D kaleidoscope is 5-inches in diameter. The techniques covered in this workshop will give you new ideas for add sparkling bead-ed texture to your art quilts. Some prior beading experience helpful, no sewing machines needed Materials fee: $55 includes: Course DVD, all beads, Swarovrski crystals, thread, needles, and pattern.

Fabulous Felted Creations—Monique Kleinhans The world is full of beautiful fibers just waiting to be part of your next art quilt! In this class we explore the combination of needle-felting, couching and thread art, to make unique fiber creations, and discuss options of different quilted backgrounds on which to display them.

Kathleen Moorhead Johnson started quilting in 1983 and teaching in 1987. She designs original patterns and also focuses on other designer’s patterns. She is a certified Angle Play Instructor and a Phillips Fiber Arts specialist. She has had many of her quilts published in books by well known authors. She has had 6 quilts in the AQS Quilt Art Calendars with the latest in the 2016 calendar and one in the upcoming 2018 edition. Kathleen is known for her upbeat and relaxed style of teaching. She lives in Alexander, ND with her husband Robert. They have 4 children and 4 grandchildren.

Nancy Eha has been exploring with beads and fabric for over 25 years. Most of what she teaches are new beading techniques she has developed. She has taught internationally, authored three beading books, and written numerous magazine articles. As a former class-room teacher, she breaks down all seemingly complex beading techniques onto manageable steps so that every student has a positive learning experience. Dubbed “The Beading Queen” by her students, she resides in Stillwater, Minnesota. Website: BeadCreative.com

Rana Heredia has been sewing since childhood when she specialized in designer outfits for both herself and her Barbie. In 1995, she took up the art of quilting and found a passion that has since filled her life. She finds her inspiration in color, nature, simplicity and the American way.

Connie Dilts was raised in a family of quilters. She began sewing her own clothes in junior high. She has taught for many years, beginning as a Home Economics teacher in Minnesota. She enjoys designing, handwork (especially working with wool), embroidery, and appliqué. Connie enjoys teaching techniques that make projects simple to make but at the same time look sharp and artistic. Her enthusiasm for doing hand work is contagious. She has her own pattern company, Magenta Rose, which she began in 2014. Connie and her husband, Steve, live in Billings. csdilts@msn.com

Instructor Bios

Monique Kleinhans is not your typical quilter. While her work includes tradi-tional quilting techniques, she also incorporates appliqué, bobbin work and thread painting, along with her own hand-dyed and hand-painted fabrics. Many composi-tions include three-dimensional objects with a variety of fibers and textures. Living on the Swan River, she draws a lot of inspiration from the natural beauty around her; the constantly-changing seasons and the majestic animals that wander by daily. Her quilts express her love for nature, and for exploring fibers and tex-tures.

Nancy Sasse—It all started with a pretty green gingham covered in flocked flowers! She sewed her first dress in 4-H and her love for all things sewing and fabric was started. Quilt-ing lessons through an adult education class opened new doors and she was fully hooked.

After years as a nurse and then as a restaurant owner, she knew her next adventure was going to involve fabric. Four Winds Quilting (Family, Friends, Faith & Fabric) was started in her home in 2008. After several years, she transitioned to her current location. She feels blessed to work with fabric, be creative and call her awesome customers her friends!

Barbara Olson Featured Quilter

Barbara Olson is a na onal and interna onal award-winning quilt ar st, teacher, lecturer, and author. Her quilts have appeared in many publica ons and exhibits around the world. Barbara has wri en books, “Journey of an Art Quilter: Crea ve Strategies and Techniques” and “Singularly Drama c: Crea ng Sensa onal Images with One Strong Focus.”

In The Beginning, one of Barbara's art quilts was chosen as one of The Twen eth Century's Best American Quilts. Many of her art quilts are included in private and corporate collec ons across the country.

For the last twenty-five years, Barbara has been developing and giving workshops and lectures for those interested in expanding their unique crea ve talents in the area of quilt arts. Her classes are not only fun and dynamic, they are also filled with innova ve techniques and opportuni es to create wonderfully unique art quilts.

When Barbara is not on the road teaching or judging quilt shows, she is at her home and studio in Billings.

Wanda Thomas, the owner of Quilt Lodge in Red Lodge, Montana.

Lauren Rogers ‘ sewing obsession began at an early age with an involvement in the 4-H program and par cipa ng in county fairs and style shows. She made the transi on into quil ng approximately 26 years ago and hasn’t stopped since. Lauren graduated from MSU with a Home Economics degree and started her professional career in retail at Hancock Fabrics. A er the birth of her youngest son, she started a homebased busi-

ness doing longarm quil ng. A er moving to Montana in 2002, Lau-ren opened Backdoor Quilt Shoppe with her mom. She has been teaching classes and making samples using a variety of techniques since. Being a Cer fied Instructor for Quiltworx and Judy Niemeyer Quil ng allows her to share paper piecing techniques with stu-dents. Lauren enjoys sharing all aspects of the crea ve side of the brain with machine embroidery, quil ng, sewing and cra ing.

2017 Quilt Show Categories Art Quilt An art quilt is an original exploration of a concept or idea rather than the handing down of a “pattern”. It experiments with textile manipulation, color, texture and/or diversity of mixed media. An Art Quilt often pushes quilt world boundaries. Quilt Among Friends This category is suitable for guild quilts, round robins, group quilts, and charitable quilts with more than three persons participating. Minimum size is 190 perimeter inches. Handwork Much of the creation on the quilt top was done by hand rather than machine. Example techniques could include hand embroidery, hand quilting, hand applique, or hand piecing. Youth Quilt Quilt made by a person 18 years or younger. No entry fee required. Challenge Quilt New Quilts from Old Favorites “Everything old is new again….” Create a new quilt using an old pattern (one which originated at least 20 years ago – reference pattern in description on Big Sky Quilt Association Quilt Show Entry Form). The original block pattern must appear at least once in the quilt, but can evolve into a new interpretation by tweaking the pattern, layout and/or coloration. See Challenge Quilt Rules for full details. Machine Quilting Quilts entered in the Machine Quilting Category will focus on the overall machine quilting (stitching used to sandwich the top, batting, and backing together). If you opt to enter your quilt in the Machine Quilting Category, it will not be included in other categories. Vintage Vintage items are to be 30 years or older. Quilts must consist of three layers and be machine quilted. Perimeter to be not less than 96 inches. Quilts must have a hanging sleeve

and be able to withstand hanging in the show for the designated number of days. Vintage quilts may have been displayed in a Big Sky Quilt Association show in the past due to the passage of time. Large Quilt If your entry does not fit into any other category, consider the size of the quilt. For the Large Quilt Category, total outside measurement should be 350 inches or larger. Medium Large Quilt If your entry does not fit into any other category, consider the size of the quilt. For the Medium Large Quilt Category, total outside measurement should be between 276 inches and 349 inches. Medium Quilt If your entry does not fit into any other category, consider the size of the quilt. For the Medium Quilt Category, total outside measurement should be between 193 inches and 275 inches. Small Quilt If your entry does not fit into any other category, consider the size of the quilt. For the Small Quilt Category, total outside measurements should be between 73 inches and 192 inches. Miniature Quilt A miniature quilt is a scaled down version of a larger quilt. In other words, all elements of a miniature quilt (blocks, borders, sashing, etc.) should be reduced in size to a proportion that matches the size of the quilt. If the quilt contains pieced blocks, blocks shall not measure more than 4 inches on any side. Quilts may be pieced, appliquéd, embroidered, or wholecloth. Quilts must consist of three layers and have visible machine quilting. Total perimeter of the quilt shall not exceed 96 inches and no single side shall be more than 24 inches in length. Miscellaneous A quilted item that does not fit into any other category would be considered in the Miscellaneous Category. This could include bags, purses, wearable fashion, placemats, etc.
