Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine ▪ SUPPLEMENTARY CME ▪ 2016 3

Message from the Medical Directors Welcome to the supplemental CME catalogue for fall 2016. Please note that there are courses that require a minimum number of participants in order to run the session. Paramedics will be notified of this requirement in the confirmation email upon booking. It is the responsibility of each individual paramedic to ensure that he or she is compliant with Supplementary CME deadline of December 31, 2016. Sunnybrook will only be sending one reminder letter in 2016 to paramedics who have not completed their Supplementary CME. This final reminder letter to eligible paramedics will be sent in October, 2016. Failure to meet the deadline will result in administrative deactivation. You will find a range of educational events and opportunities that will challenge you, advance your knowledge and hopefully help your process in education as a paramedic. Knowing that each of you has your own learning style, this catalogue lists events that should fulfill everyone’s needs. There are courses sponsored by Sunnybrook as well as pre-approved “third party courses” (e.g. ACLS, PALS, NRP) which should satisfy you whether your interest is clinical, EMS leadership or research. For those of you who want to customize your educational program, we have increased the flexibility in choosing your own CME event. This can be almost anything you feel will enhance your abilities as a paramedic. There is a process outlined in this catalogue to ensure the Base Hospital approves your course of study in advance. Once you have reviewed your external CME options, apply for pre-approval using the form found here: Prehospital CME Approval Form Hopefully many of you attended or have heard from your colleagues about the “Mind of the Medical Director” day we held in December 2015. There were over 150 paramedics who attended, some from as far away as Ottawa. We had so much fun doing this and learned so much from the presentations prepared by your colleagues that we want to do this again. We are hoping to hold it in more places and at different times of the year. Consider this our personal invitation to watch for upcoming dates which will be communicated by the end of March 2016. Our overall goal is to create an environment for learning of your choice that will meet your needs. A key hallmark of all professions is active engagement in the pursuit of one’s own education. We hope the supplemental CME you choose this year will allow you to achieve that goal.

4 Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine ▪ SUPPLEMENTARY CME ▪ 2016 Frequently Asked Questions

What is CME? Continuing Medical Education allows paramedics to maintain and enhance their knowledge, skills and to learn about different clinical situations that occur less often in the field. Sunnybrook strives to provide essential courses and new learning opportunities for paramedics through CME. In order for CME credits to be allocated, the educational activity must enhance the clinical practice of paramedicine at the certification level of the paramedic.

Our continuing goal is to provide all paramedics an opportunity to self-direct their CME needs as much as possible. Our CME program provides a variety of options for paramedics to acquire all CME credits within the CME deadline.

How do I contact the Registrar? You may contact the Registrar for courses listed in the calendar via email at [email protected]. Your inquiry will be directed to the most appropriate person.

What is the supplementary CME deadline for 2016? The deadline to acquire supplementary CME credits is December 31, 2016.

What happens if I do not complete my supplementary CME? Under section 0.Reg.257/00.S.8 (1-3) of the Ambulance Act and Section 6 of the ALS Patient Care Standard, paramedics who do not complete the CME requirement prescribed by Sunnybrook Regional Base Hospital are not eligible for annual certification, are subject to administrative deactivation and will be required to attend a mandatory make-up session in January 2017.

How do I register? Paramedics are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and must register for a course via email at [email protected] within a minimum of 14 days prior to the course date.

Is there precourse material? Precourse material is included with some courses to meet the needs of various learners and maximize effectiveness of the learning opportunity. Precourse preparation is at the discretion of the learner and is not mandatory. The course material will be electronically mailed to your work email address.

What happens if I’ve registered for a course but am unable to attend? Contact the Registrar immediately as cost recovery fees might be applied if the space is unable to be filled prior to the commencement of the course.

Is a deposit required? No deposit is required; however, you will be liable for an administration cost once registration is confirmed and you cancel in less than two weeks of the course date.

I am a newly-certified ACP. Do I need to complete a Supplementary CME course this year? Newly certified ACPs are not required to complete supplementary CME requirements for the year of initial certification.

Can I complete my CME through Sunnybrook Regional Base Hospital if I am certified under a different base hospital in Ontario? Only Sunnybrook ACPs can attend courses offered in this calendar; however, other BHPs can, at their discretion, accept CMEs completed at Sunnybrook for CME hours to meet requirements for annual certification.

Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine ▪ SUPPLEMENTARY CME ▪ 2016 5

May I take a CME activity not outlined in the CME Calendar? CME credit approval must be obtained from Sunnybrook Base Hospital prior to attending the desired program/event. If the CME is taken without prior approval, CME credits may or may not be granted.

Are certain courses pre-approved? A pre-approved list of courses can be found under the External Course/Education Activity section.

Can I attend CME offered by other Base Hospitals? Opportunities exist for Paramedics to attend CME delivered by another Base Hospital. Submission of a completion/ participation certificate by the respective BH will be required to enable Sunnybrook to award CME credits.

Can I be reimbursed for registration fees for external courses? Sunnybrook does not reimburse paramedics for any fees related to completion of CME credits.

How can I obtain pre-approval for external course/educational activity to use towards my Supplementary CME requirements? If the event is not pre-approved, provide as much information as possible on the External Course/Educational Activity Pre-approval Form, found here: Prehospital CME Approval Form

Include any supporting documents (course syllabus, completion certificate etc.). Your request will be reviewed and an appropriate amount of CME credit will be given.

Information to provide: a. Course name, date, location and contact hours (usually listed in the course brochure) b. Outline of learning objectives c. Describe how the CME enhances your clinical practice of paramedicine at your certification level The test for CME credit allocation is – "does the educational activity enhance the clinical practice of paramedicine at the certification level of the paramedic?" In your application, pay particular attention to answering this question.

How many CME credits will I be awarded for activities requiring pre-approval? For 2016, Sunnybrook will only be awarding 12 CME credits for all external learning activities evaluated and approved for CME. Depending on content, the number of credits may or may not equal the hours actually spent completing the specified CME. Sunnybrook is the only organization authorized to allocate CME credits. Proof of attendance and successful completion will be required to receive credit for all educational endeavours. Approval will be granted only after determining the relevancy to (a) paramedic’s scope of practice and (b) congruence with the Base Hospital’s learning objectives expectation.

What happens if I choose a CME event without pre-approval? If you choose to take a CME activity without pre-approval, you risk not receiving CME points if the activity does not meet Sunnybrook’s CME requirements. You will be required to submit the learning objectives here: Prehospital CME Approval Form On the form, explain how the educational activity enhances the clinical practice of paramedicine at your certification level.

What do I submit for proof of completion to earn my CME credits? After event completion, you are required to submit proof of attendance to the registrar [email protected]. It may be in the form of a certificate or letter from a course coordinator.

The Pediatric Patient – Common Emergencies The overall goal of this course is to increase paramedic comfort and confidence when attending to pediatric populations and their caregivers. Pediatric patients encompass a small portion of a paramedic’s overall call volume and have anatomic, physiologic and pathophysiologic attributes that are unique from adults. This combination can lead to paramedic anxiety and uncertainty during these situations.

Using a variety of learning techniques, this course will help paramedics improve their clinical approach to young patients and review some of the common injuries and illnesses present in pediatric populations.
