It was Hendle’s personal boat, designed and built during the time he was worked as Chief Draſtsman for Starling Burgess on Ranger, winner of the 1937 America’s Cup. Hendel brought the boat with him when he moved to Camden in 1941. By the late 1940s, the boat was under the ownership of Fred Gatcombe, who kept LOON off Fred’s Owls Head shore facing Rockland Harbor. Fred ran Snow’s Shipyard and kept the boat in beautiful condition. Rebuilt in 2004 by the current owner. LOON is in good overall condition, with cedar planking and oak frames, mahogany deck trim, and Dynal over plywood deck. LOON features wood spars, bronze hardware, and almost 200 sq. ft. sail area. Also included are two sets of sails in very good condition with one set for heavy fall winds, sail covers, anchor with chain, cockpit cushions, and an electric bilge pump with float switch, battery and small solar charger.
